#Error Installing Kubuntu

so i tried to install kubuntu 26.04. short version i'm running into an error stating: "installation failed. could not close encrypted partition on the target system".

the drive in question was originally linux mint with luks encryption. i've tried to delete all partition on the drive to leave it fully free space, and i've tried to format it and leave 1 gpt data partition covering the whole drive. same error. the error only ever occurs at the end of the installation somewhere past 90%. i've also tried installing it with and without luks enabled. i think most of the attempts i made to install it were with btrfs file formatting as gpt.

i can try going back and doing the same 4 installation attempts with ext4 since i can think of nothing else to try at this time. there is one other drive in the system that i'm considering disconnecting in case it's the reason it's throwing an error. the drive is an encrypted storage drive. the installation wouldn't have a reason to access it that i know of but if it did it wouldn't have the password which might explain why it's claiming it couldn't close the partition, but that isn't on the same drive i'm trying to install to. my goal would be to install the drive in ext4 or btrfs with luks encryption and use the pc mostly for gaming and web browsing.

i've run outa ideas to guess and test my way to success. any advice would be appreciated.

turbid bobcat
#

boot the live kubuntu stick

polar parcel
#

i'm actually in it right now

turbid bobcat
#

then open up gnome-disks from terminal

#

install gnome-disk-utility if not found

polar parcel
#

i had to install it but yeah i have it and gparted up.

turbid bobcat
#

show disks app fullscreen

#

if u can log to discord in a browser there, all the better

#

so u can use Spectacle to screenshot

polar parcel
turbid bobcat
#

show also the 2 TB plz

polar parcel
turbid bobcat
#

can u powerdown and physically unplug that drive?

#

ST2000 model

polar parcel
#

yeah. i'll need 2 or 3 min but shouldn't be an issue to tell em apart. ones a hd ones an ssd. should i do so now?

turbid bobcat
#

yep make sure unplug ST2000

#

either power or data cable from one end

polar parcel
#

brb then

turbid bobcat
#

once isolated just the EVO, do that to the samsung.

#

then close gparted and run up the kubuntu installer

#

u can also use kde partition manager to make a new GPT as above. dont necessarily need gparted.

#

then in the kubuntu installer, just pick the simple 'erase and install' option . no encryption on ANYTHING

#

you can do kde vaults later on if need be, once installed OS is up and running fine

polar parcel
#

singled it out and converted it to fully unused space with gpt table. moving onto the install step.

polar parcel
polar parcel
#

so good new i got it to install. bad news about 3-5 minutes into running the os the desktop started crashing some program called kwin. got to the point i couldn't even open the start bar.

in detail i was customizing system settings. dark mode, setting tv resolution, ui scaling and font sizes. dark mode kept reverting back to light despite me not even being on that page and i had to do it about a half dozen times. shortly after came the kwin error and then i could no longer even open the start menu so i'm reinstalling again. looked kinda like a kernal panic from mint but only on the top half of the screen when it press the super button or left click the start menu. can't say i've ever had this eventful of a time installing an os hahaha.

#

oh ps. i had told it to just install all for the updates it was requesting. i strongly suspect this being the culprit but i don't have proof of it.

polar parcel
#

would explain why it all disappeared then refreshed and came back.

turbid bobcat
#

u must click apply

#

if making any changes in kde settings modules

polar parcel
turbid bobcat
#

ensure this computer isnt using nvidia

#

else u will inevitably encounter video issues

polar parcel
turbid bobcat
#

well set it up properly

#

inxi -b result plz

polar parcel
turbid bobcat
#

from the true and installed OS

turbid bobcat
polar parcel
#

discord itself seems to have it's own complaints

turbid bobcat
#

just go on the web browser

turbid bobcat
#

sudo apt update && sudo apt install inxi ; inxi -b

turbid bobcat
#

it's using the FOSS driver

turbid bobcat
polar parcel
turbid bobcat
#

kind of

turbid bobcat
polar parcel
#

damn. i found the kwin crash again

turbid bobcat
#

well i said stop screwing around

#

and put the damn drivers right FIRST

turbid bobcat
polar parcel
#

i hit update all in discover. didn't download anything but discord and brave.

what is SB? the package manager it has is discovery, and that's what caused kwin to now lock up any time i try to touch the start bar.

polar parcel
turbid bobcat
#

go into a tty

#

ctrl-alt-F4 should do it

#

log in there, then do sudo reboot

#

if you get to a pretty login screen, see the session-chooser in corner if has plasma x11 and use that

#

once in desktop , sudo apt update && sudo apt install nvidia-driver

#

this should ideally get done the second u booted the installed OS the very first time

#

then after another reboot, inxi -Gxxx to confirm

polar parcel
#

rebooted fine. one of these are the offenders. since i suspected them i took a pic b4 i hit update all.

#
Error: Unable to locate package nvidia-driver
houseofrahl@Foyer-Of-Rahl:~$ sudo apt install nvidia-driver
Error: Unable to locate package nvidia-driver
turbid bobcat
#

did u start X session as i mentioned?

turbid bobcat
#

probably wont even have it

#

being ubuntu 26 and all

turbid bobcat
#

then sudo apt install synaptic && synaptic

#

then click the reload button in it, and search button> nvidia

#

maximize it and take photograph

polar parcel
# turbid bobcat did u start X session as i mentioned?

i double checked looking for a selectable. i didn't see one. my office pc has a drop down like you're describing on pop os. it's how i swapped to kde plasma on pop os. i don't see any such thing on kubuntu's login screen.

turbid bobcat
#

mhm

#

anyway, forget that bit for the moment

#

get the other stuff just mentioned up

polar parcel
turbid bobcat
#

try whole line first

polar parcel
#

what does it mean without admin priviliges? i used sudo. isn't that basically run as admin?

turbid bobcat
#

f screenshot tool works, do a full

#

nvm

#

open synaptic from the start menu or via alt+F2

#

it MUST prompt for admin password and accept it

polar parcel
#

i can get it open. but it is just chain crashing and closing things. i didn't see a refresh button but i'll look for an nvidia and a search button

turbid bobcat
#

waittttt

#

log OUT

#

and back in

#

@polar parcel

polar parcel
#

k?

#

but then what?

turbid bobcat
#

then once at fresh desktop,

#

ctrl-alt-t for terminal

#

synaptic-pkexec

polar parcel
#

after i can come back to discord to report?

turbid bobcat
#

after it opens synaptic and u've maximized it

polar parcel
#

i don't think i can maximize it

turbid bobcat
#

and if discord gives issue, then use mobile device

#

ofc u can maximize it

polar parcel
#

i've managed to open it several times but trying to maximize cause kwin to crash each time.

turbid bobcat
#

or drag the bottom right corner, and make it biggish

polar parcel
#

if i can i will. after i blow it up then i look for nvidia drivers?

turbid bobcat
#

just search nvidia driver in the search box (NOT THE FILTER OR QUICKSEARCH BOX)

#

exactly as i typed it

polar parcel
#

k

#

good 2 go now?

turbid bobcat
#

idk. show list of results. drag the horizontal split down more so 90% of height is results

polar parcel
#

k. let's see

#

got awway with not maximizing it and just drag resizing.

turbid bobcat
#

good so far

#

just refine the search. click the button: searchby 'name'

#

then nvidia driver

polar parcel
#

this is new. normally the crash is kwin's fault.

turbid bobcat
#

click continue

#

it always does that

#

also fix the headline columns in synaptic

#

so every column is evenly stretched and readable completely

polar parcel
turbid bobcat
#

fix the 'package' headline column width please...

#

as well as the 'installed' column width....

polar parcel
turbid bobcat
#

literally ever column

polar parcel
#

i can't grab the S column

turbid bobcat
#

ok this older card. try the 535 driver

#

second item in above picture

polar parcel
#

not the open, server, or server-open right? just vanilla 535.

turbid bobcat
#

u must also resize the 'INSTALLED" COLUMN

#

SHEESH

#

for better more proper view and no confusion

polar parcel
#

nothing in the column

turbid bobcat
#

2nd result top of list

#

click the square, mark for installation,

#

the hit apply in toolbar

polar parcel
#

additional changes?

turbid bobcat
#

it is wise to scroll the list

#

u can do a review after click apply

#

in the 'to be installed' side-pointing arrow

#

and the 'to be upgraded' etc

polar parcel
#

before i hit apply i wanted to show that it's now highlighting 535 and 580 the blue one is just from my own selection so it didn't cover the green.

turbid bobcat
#

yeah it seems fine

#

535 be linking to 580

polar parcel
#

k. should be done in about a minute

turbid bobcat
#

u can do a review after click apply
in the 'to be installed' side-pointing arrow
and the 'to be upgraded' etc

#

anyway, it will require a reboot once fully done

#

then inxi -Gxxx and review it thoroughly.

polar parcel
#

k. will go reboot then

turbid bobcat
#

it finished installing those 109 packages?

polar parcel
#

i remember it saying 2000mb. yeah. it now has 535 and 580 checked

turbid bobcat
#

yep 580.142 in effect

polar parcel
#

i'm able to open the start bar now without crashing kwin. win.

turbid bobcat
#

do u need to use the 2nd (encrypted) hdd?

#

See if this kubuntu already comes with KDE Vaults

#

may now also install gnome disks. either via terminal, or synaptic

polar parcel
#

the 2nd drive is already encrypted with luks. it's just not loaded/mounted because it's unpowered. haven't plugged it back in yet because was dealing with another issue. install didn't like the secondary encrypted drive, then the os didn't like my ancient gpu.

turbid bobcat
#

or even in Discover, if it doesn't crash.

turbid bobcat
polar parcel
#

brave was causing a service crash error but managing to launch despite it each time. now it launched without an error .... but one oddity remains.

turbid bobcat
#

I would also recommend installing timeshift and doing 'create'

#

before anything buggers up

polar parcel
#

here is it launched.

turbid bobcat
#

this will also snapshot your working nvidia state

polar parcel
turbid bobcat
polar parcel
#

confusing. i've been doing screen shots before but this one it don't like

turbid bobcat
#

common issue sometimes if using screenshot tools + nvidia

polar parcel
#

small screen capture was fine?

turbid bobcat
#

yes

polar parcel
#

maybe file limit?

turbid bobcat
#

i can see your pinned apps

polar parcel
#

brave is pinned.

#

but brave when not launched is a white sheet

#

such a minor error

turbid bobcat
#

that can be dealt with in other ways i guess

polar parcel
#

in windows we could right click and set shotcut image.

turbid bobcat
#

you can make a popout side panel (autohides) having launchers

#

or u can use a different sort of panel launcher WIDGET in Plasma

#

to which u can customize any icon under the known universe

polar parcel
#

the panel ITSELF is a widget? i thought it was baked into plasma. linux is so customizable it puts a smile on my face. thank you for sticking with me and helping me through this. gpu drivers normally are the second thing i install after os updates on windows. but since nvidia doesn't natively support linux to my knowledge i was told everything comes from the packaage manager, in this case discovery.

polar parcel
turbid bobcat
#

sooner than later

#

yes

turbid bobcat
polar parcel
# turbid bobcat .

question. i read that btrfs can do basically restore points natively just because of the file system. could that be used to achieve this?

turbid bobcat
#

may need to unlock widgets first

turbid bobcat
#

or lsblk -o name,fstype,size,fssize,mountpoint

#

if u prefer

polar parcel
#

easier as an image

turbid bobcat
#

bloody hell

#

well.. good luck

polar parcel
#

never used snaps before kubuntu. aways used deb, flatpaks or sudo apt install commands.

turbid bobcat
#

idk anything about encryption so if u fuck your system, prepare to worry and pain

#

for btrfs, use btrfs tools package

#

and snapper

polar parcel
#

nothing of value on em anyways. just playing around with it to familiarize myself more than anything. i don't really have a security need for a private pc. kinda like trying to learn linux coming from windows. so many new interesting features to mess around with.

turbid bobcat
#

though no idea if it will handles recovery on encrypted volumes and subvolumes

polar parcel
#

on mint i know it has a firewall program installed by default., but it's off by default. what is that and should i be downloading it for kubuntu so i at least have a firewall?

turbid bobcat
#

from discover or terminal idk

#

ubuntu likes to feed/use snaps even when u say use the apt install command

turbid bobcat
#

whereis gufw

#

those are firewall apps

#

if not found, then u may have a different firewall by KDE

#

or none at all possibly

polar parcel
#

ufw returned a hit

turbid bobcat
#

a path u mean?

polar parcel
#

yreah

turbid bobcat
#

well it's CLI only

#

i think kde has a firewall. research it regarding kubuntu 26

polar parcel
#

i'm really bad with acronyms. what is CLi?

turbid bobcat
#

command line interface

polar parcel
#

if the ai is to be believed kubuntu does not ship with a firewall

turbid bobcat
#

for btrfs, use btrfs tools package
and snapper , within that package for system snapshots

turbid bobcat
polar parcel
turbid bobcat
#

it's like timeshift

#

research in your leisure

polar parcel
#

huh. the system settings window. i can manually make bigger. and i can maximize or minimize it. i can't shrink it. and it's already taking up maybe 85-90% of the screen

#

disabled by default. so the ai was mistaken.

turbid bobcat
#

seems this UI is a liason to ufw

polar parcel
#

seems so yeah. system settings is handling it rather than it having it's own window and interface like mint's firewall.

turbid bobcat
#

and for window titlebars and titles, u should be able to tweak that in appearance> window decorations. each them ought to have an edit button

polar parcel
turbid bobcat
#

Anyway, this post topic is SOLVED

polar parcel
#

yeah

turbid bobcat
#

also Window decorations (titlebars): Endless (Endless Aurorae theme) does auto colour adapt based on the plasma COLOURS setting

polar parcel
#

can't understand why i can't resize this. i can grab the edges and expand it but pulling inward... nada. just goes semi transperant to show it's selected.

turbid bobcat
#

4th last thing at left pane

#

settings box may have fixed geometry

#

ghosting on window move is likely in Desktop Effects

#
