Originally, when I installed Linux Mint onto a Live USB and booted Linux Mint normally off it, it would do the same thing, result in a black screen. But when I entered Compatibility Mode off the Live USB, it would boot just fine. Having that aside, I created two new partition on the same hard drive that has my copy of Windows 11, installed Linux Mint onto them, made two partitions for the dev & home folders, and it completed. But when I go into the GRUB menu to select Linux Mint, it still produces that black screen. Furthermore, the Recovery Mode option would give me different results. Either showing a code hang, a KERNAL PANIC! Please reboot your PC. Attempting to kill init exitcode=0x0000000b message, a "Timed out waiting for udev queue to be empty." message which would appear during the mounting process & hard drive process of recovery mode, or a Recovery Menu that I can't interact with because it didn't mount my keyboard, and only the first two devices hooked up to the PC. I have unplugged everything except for the keyboard to see if that worked, but it would detect my Bluetooth integrated adapters first, and not the keyboard. I tried using nomodeset to have it use the basic drivers and not the NVIDIA ones, and that didn't work. I tried re-installing the OS again, that didn't work. I uninstalled anything to do with NVIDIA off the partition, that didn't work either. I deleted/reset my TPM keys & secure book codes in the BIOS, that didn't work either. I have checked and verified that the hard drive is healthy and has no faulty corruption or anything when checking through the terminal on the Linux Mint Live USB as well. And Linux Mint is able to view and see contents inside the /dev drive that contains the OS, everything appears to be where it should be. How do I boot into Linux Mint? I am running an NVIDIA RTX 3060 GPU, an Intel i7-11700 and have 64GB of RAM.

Please describe current state of your computer, what is installed (Windows ? Linux ? both ? how). What work, Whad do not work... What happen when you start computer.
I have both Windows 11 & Linux Mint installed currently, both on the same hard drive.
When I startup my PC, I am greeted with the Grub menu. I can select the Windows Boot Manager or Linux Mint, as well as the Linux Mint Recovery Mode option. I am able to enter in custom arguments (via the E key) before booting into either. Once I boot into Recovery Mode, I'm greeted with a console output, where different results appear. Either showing a code hang, a KERNAL PANIC error, a "Timed out waiting for udev queue to be empty." message which appears during the mounting process & hard drive process, or a Recovery Menu that I can't interact with with the keyboard.
The only method that works to get into Linux Mint is through the Live USB Compatibility Mode option.
you say even the recovery mode crash ?
Yes. Most of the time, I'd get a Kernal Panic error. (Not through the Live USB)
it's a laptop ?
It's a PC. HP Pavilion Gaming Desktop TG01-2xxx.
... ok... so I guess the bios is almost empty and you have pretty no option
What do you mean?
You have an HP BIOS setup
with "HP BIOS" options, and knowing HP, it's generally not very usefull
Ah.
The RTX 3060 came with the original setup or you added it later ?
It came with the PC, I bought this off Amazon.
Ok, can you take some photos of your BIOS setup ?
Sure, what tabs exactly?
Try with the first main page, since I litteraly don't know what to expect from that beast
Alright, gimme a sec.
Here we go!
Well as expected, almost empty
@dull spoke first thing, in Configuration: SATA Emulation, what choice do you have except RAID ?
Alright.
I donât have any bitlocker setup.
The problem is that I don't understand why you are in RAID mode by default, I don't know what really happen if you go to AHCI... maybe Windows relly on it
what a mess
Go in Configuration > Devices Options, and show me what you have here
Not too aware of the differences between them. The drive with Windows and Linux Mint are on an SSD, and there is one additional internal drive and another external one on this PC.
Ok, go in Rapid Storage Technology
I think what itâs highlighting here is the secondary internal drive. The one with Windows and Linux Mint is on a 1TB drive.
ok...
Should I try booting into the recovery mode (not through the live usb) of Linux Mint to show the console?
You can... using the nomodeset option
but this is not a long-term solution
I think your problem is this RAID/AHCI thing
I am not sure, but...
I cant answer with 100% certainty, however you should not lose any data. Worst case, switching from RAID to AHCI would cause the drive to be unable to be read. If this were to happen, you could switch it back and everything should be copasetic. However, this is not likely to be the case. The controller should just pick up the disk as a single drive and not lose access or data.
@dull spoke I think you can try to swith to AHCI... If that does not work, go back in BIOS and put RAID back
Here is the first error:
that's after you changed to AHCI ?
Still in RAID.
Little nervous to do that just from reading online about it. I donât have a way to backup everything on the main drive due to my other two drives being full. (Video editing assets)
Is there maybe another way around this? The Live USB compatibility mode worked just fine when booting into that.
Compatibility mode is like, your Linux will be like... no accelerated graphics, etc
it's like the Windows "Failsafe" mode, you can do almost nothing on it
But if you want, yes
Once in grub menu press e key
Ok after doing some research, the only thing itâs referring to about data loss, is if I had a raid setup where all my hard drives were acting as one, then data loss can happen. But since I donât, and my bios showing I have rapid storage technology on my machine, that wonât happen. Iâll try this out later tonight and update ya if it worked. Thanks so much for your help!
you should also disable Rapid Storage actually
but I am pretty sure RAID is linked to RST, so I think setting up AHCI will disable RST
And it is known that RST cause issues with Linux
Alright, so I changed it from RAID to ASCI, and absolutely nothing changed... Everything is as it was when it was in RAID...
Ok... you there ?
yee
If you have, we will try something
Alright.
If this is not RAID, I am pretty sure the problem come from Nvidia GPU, I am pretty sure the problem is that your BIOS does not enable Resizable-BAR and Aboove 4G Decoding, and the main probleme is that your HP bios does not let control of that
So, unfortunately, I things there is nothing you can do, but, we will try to install the Nvidia drivers
Lets go
Start your computer and once you see the Grub menu (where you select Mint or Windows) press the e key
This will show you a strange screen with programming code like text
once you there, tell me
Alright, gimme a sec to get there.
Do I press E on Linux Mint, or the Linux Mint Recovery Mode option?
You simply press e while you are facing the menu
yes you press e on Linux Mint normal
sorry, I just wake up
Ok Iâm there, now what?
ok, you should see a line with quiet splash
Yeah I see it
you replace splash by nomodeset so you have quiet nomodeset
and you press... see the instruction bellow, to boot
F10
Alright, uhh I just get a black screen.
... hmm, wait a bit
When it goes to a black screen, the fans simmer down to almost a quiet level.
still nothing ?
Still nothing.
Okay... restart...
If you managed to start using compatibity mode, you should be able to start this way
Can you try to start of the USB again, but the normal way, to check if that still crash ?
then start again using the compatibility mode
if the normal wau does not work
Alright
Same quiet nomodeset?
no no...
Simply try to boot off the USB, the USB you used to install
but try boot normal way, from the USB
not the compatibility mode
like you were going to install it
Black screen as well.
ok, and if you try the compatibility mode ?
That works fine.
Alright.
Alright now what?
Ok, this time add nomodeset at the end so you have quiet splash nomodeset
take a photo so I verify it's ok
space after nomodeset !
Black screen again. Both my keyboard and mouse go out, with my mouse regaining back power when this does happen.
I begin to suspect your installation is corrupted
Idk if this is related, but I do remember, as it was installing the is, thati
WAIT
WHAT
HOW!?
ok, splash started...
Don't declare victory too soon, your Linux is currently running in an abnormal and completely unoptimized mode... so nothing is won yet.
I was gonna say that as it was installing Linux mint on my PC, I noticed that I kept seeing errors where it said âfile could not be foundâ when copying files from the live USB to the hard drive.
Oh greatâŠ
Okay, so clearly something wrong with your installation I think
How do you flashed your USB ?
What do you by that?
The USB key you used to start/install Linux, what software do you used to flash it, with which parameters ?
I forgot what it was called, it was not Rufus. It had the letter b for the name, and had a green icon.
Balena echer?
Yes
I would recommand you reflash your USB
Did the install not complain about RST when you installed it?
Nope. It said it installed successfully when it finished.
Despite those errors I kept seeing on the installation console.
This app
And was usb able to boot in normal mode, or only in compatibility?
on compatbility mode
Only in compatibility
I suspect the RST to be enabled by BIOS, but it's an HP bios and RST option is not obvious
It gave kernel panic on normal mode? USB I mean?
Yes
Well with nomodeset
what you say ? you tried nomodeset booting the USB ?
First I got to that kernel panic through the regular Linux mint option
I booted into Linux mint on the hard drive with nomodeset ad got that kernel panic just now
Let's see.... first, do you intend to keep windows?
Recreate your USB using Rufus with GPT partition sheme
Disk 1 being the windows and Linux drive.
I'd use ventoy
But before that, what is sata emulation set to in bios right now?
better verify in BIOS right now...
Also take a look at RST parameters, which is cryptic
I can check that. Also is this right?
BTW, did you check the checksum of the iso?
Donât think I have.
@stray tundra Do you know how to check SHA256 of the file in windows? I keep forgetting that
Nop...
wait I'll tell you
forget this link, french website..
It is possible using powershell
certutil -hashfile "path\to\file" SHA256 I think?
Get-FileHash .\ficher.iso -Algorithm SHA256 | Format-List
yes, that is alternate method, via legacy command line
certutil -hashfile fichier.iso SHA256
Or you can use an app like https://github.com/gurnec/HashCheck/releases/tag/v2.4.0
Installed it but I donât see it anywhere
After installing the app, go to the file's properties, there should be a new tab
.... match to what?
Iâm confused?
Can you photo file's properties window?
For mint 22.3 cinnamon SHA256 line should be a081ab202cfda17f6924128dbd2de8b63518ac0531bcfe3f1a1b88097c459bd4
Yours is different, so it got corrupted on download
Which server should I download from?
Ah, ok theyâre the same as this.
Ok, then proceed with rufus
Is this all correct though?
Where do I find that?
Also select as ISO?
go to command prompt as admin and type
powercfg -h off
yes iso
Ok it's off.
After you're done with the usb, we need to recheck SATA mode in bios
So just re-install Linux Mint from the Live USB and try again?
Also, the sata emulation in BIOS?
Yeah.
I'm gonna have to go here, but can come back to this in the morning.
ok
@tender plinth @stray tundra Alright, before I reinstall Linux OS, when you mention the SATA mode, do you mean if I have it set as RAID or ASCI? If so, I have already switched it to ASCI.
Other than that, yeah I guess just re-install off the same partitions. /root for the OS, and /home for the storage.
Yes, keep it AHCI... but, I would check the Rapid Storage options
In terms of Rapid Storage options, this was all I had:
and
The last should have changed since you switch to AHCI
I also wanted to check what happen if you select the drive
I also would see the entire screen
always take photo of the entire screen
You may miss pertinent information that is irelevant to you, but important to us
Alright, can check those out.
Ok where to go from here?
?
Ok the IRST disapeared
It's ok, exit Bios and try boot USB normal way (not compatibility mode)
Alright. Was this the right setup for Rufus? @stray tundra
yes
no desktop ?
Still showing this sticker.
Ok... go for Compatibility Mode
I confess I have few hope
I still think the problem is related to motherboard
No, it should start normaly on the USB
the fact you are forced to use the compatibility mode is a problem
Ok Iâm on Linux mint through usb compatibility mode.
Install it, but, once installed, it will crash, and you'll have to do the "nomodset" thing
maybe this time the "nomodeset" will work, but I doubt it work further than that
My intuition si that your BIOS does not enable modern feature like Resizable BAR and Above 4G decoding, which crash the graphic driver
But go try
We will install in Compatibility Mode, then try to install the Nvidia drivers
First option?
Either erase or something elese
go for erase
And please, take photo of the full screen !
The full screen is more interesting than the details of you displays RGB pixels
Does not seem to allow me to reformat them??
check format
30GB it's short...
anway you plan to use another partition for /home
Assign the /home partition now, you'll not be able later
I suggest you also format the /home partition
I did the home folder formatting as well
close that, show me the result
click go back and show me the full picture of partitions config
they are not selecte for format
30 GB + 7GB ... you are really not giving much room for Linux
I was told online to give the / 30GB max and the home folder the rest of the 100GB.
your home is 7GB
who told you that ?
Through this tutorial https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L2JyQ1VJm84
Welcome to this step-by-step guide on installing Linux Mint alongside Windows in a dual-boot setup! Whether you're a complete beginner or just need a refresher, this tutorial will walk you through each step in detail, making the process simple and easy to follow.
In this guide, we will start from scratch, beginning with downloading the Linux Mi...
I'd just keep home not separate
those videos...
Either way, the goal is to get to desktop on installed system first
Ok itâs done.
restart now...
Restart, take out usb when prompted and see how it goes
that will crash... unless we set nomodeset
Oops. Forgot to add that.
Too late I already restarted and added nomodeset.
Black screen at the current moment.
See if it stays black after few minutes
Ok we got the sticker now.
You sure you boot on hard drive ?
this is utterly slow...
when you see the logo, press esc once to see the text
The PC its self is very fast, idk why this is acting very slow.
because the kernel is completely lost I think

No wait... go back to where you typed nomodeset
remove words quiet splash, and add acpi=off
take a photo before continuing
yes, let's try like that
can you login?
Yep! That works!
Ok, so..... bios has wonky acpi tables....
How would I go about fixing those?
Let's see.... first we need to narrow it down. Go to settings - system administration
Enable the menu and set it 3 or 5 seconds, then click save
HP moment
ok click close. and give me some time
(I wouldn't be surprised that is intended from HP to prevent installing Linux)
I guess youâve seen other HP PCâs being unable to install Linux normally?
That's a classical sheme, but even to reinstall Windows.... HP don't want user to do what they want with their computer
Please open the terminal and show the output of
inxi -CMxxx
inxi not inix
Ok, make the terminal window bigger and run
dmesg | grep -i acpi
Meanwhile @stray tundra @dull spoke could you check if there is a bios update for this thing?
I tried, maybe you don't know the HP support website
We need the exact computer model and even maybe the serial number
look in the inxi Machine section
HP want you to install their HP Windows software for HP BIOS update...
already tried that
Oh, I uninstalled all the HP apps that were bundled with this PC.
@dull spoke can you go back to where we used acpi=off? we'll test a few more parameters
good reflex by the way
Always throw up HPslop
It would always appear a warranty window whenever I was not on my PC. Got annoying so I uninstalled all the apps.
Ok Iâm there.
Ok, same idea - remove quiet splash and try acpi=ht
HP is a walking grave at this point.
It is supplied as .exe file (HP moment)
Anyway, I am on the french HP website, HP don't want to let me go in another website
OK, itâs doing that udev error thing like in the recovery mode.
If you want to BIOS update, you'll have to download their software and follow the HP rules
There is no TG01-2xxx on my side
id it stuck on udev thing?
This would always happen when I go into recovery mode on Linux mint on the hard drive.
It gave the udev error 3 times before going to a kernel panic. The last one showed up for half a second.
Before showing this screen.
Ok, restart, next is idle=nomwait
Remove quiet splash and replace with this? Ok.
yes, make sure you type without mistakes
Looks to be doing the same thing as before.
although my fan is kicking on randomly
yeah, itâs really going loud. Thatâs weird.
Does it end up on the same panic message?
First udev msg appeared. Has not gotten there yet.
Yeah itâs just hanging at this point.
Ok, next one is intel_idle.max_cstate=1
Looks to be doing the same thing, although at one point, the screen just blackened out and then came back when stuck at the mounting process.
Do the fans get loud with this one too?
let's see if it gets to login or panic
Looks to be booting⊠after several minutes.
Though with the first image, itâs taking a while to get off that message
last one is noapic
That's something. back to research for me.
Also logging in takes really quick too. The previous working method took 2 to 3 minutes for the desktop to show.
now you can install Nvidia drivers
Should I just only run Linux mint using that argument each time? Or would that not be a good idea?
Depending if you saved parameter
Not sure what that parameter actually does
I don't followed what you did
This worked
yes but, where do you set it ?
Through the Linux mint hard drive E options
what ?
Sorry, using voice to text
Grub boot options via menu ?
Yes
Yep
click save
Alright.
How would I get Nvidia drivers on Linux Mint? I donât suppose itâs the same way as windows right??
Menu > Settings > Drivers manager
.... I'm taking that you don't want to narrow it down further?
Iâd still like to yes.
Just to make sure itâs all working 100%.
Because Iâm assuming this is only a temporary solution to get into the OS
Then remove this for now, and next try nolapic
Alright
Ok it seems to hang right here. Nothing else shows.
still stuck?
Yes
ok, restart. next is acpi=noirq
Alright, that one boots in 10 seconds as well.
Great, next try irqpoll
This one seems to be freezing, similar to this one so far.
with udev timeouts?
Has not shown yet
so just slow?
Yep.
see if it panics or gets stuck
Right... and lastly try pci=noacpi
Btw, before it reaches the kernel panic, large amounts of code appears for a second, this is the last frame before the panic. Luckily the video got it this time.
stuck there?
No, after it gets stuck, it shows a lot of code really fast and then shows a Kernal panic. Thatâs what that image is above. The last thing you see before the kernal panic screen.
that's with pci=noacpi ?
That got us this
Alright, then what about pci=noacpi ?
Ok Iâm booted into this
Great, go to settings - system administration and add that parameter there
don't forget to save
If noapic is still there, remove it
Ok I applied this. Acpi=noirq.
lower case only acpi=noirq
Yeah I did it lower case. Mobile just adds caps to new sentences.
Ok, that should let it boot normally - that's the best we can do for this bios
Alright. And this mode should be able to utilize the cpu, ram and gpu?
or is it still using some sort of compatibility mode to run?
Usually just slightly worse performance under heavy load and some devices may act strange, but it's much better than broader parameters from before
It seems to not save the parameters when I boot into Linux mint normally
Just restart normally, do you get to the desktop?
Nope, I got to the black screen
Though set parameters menu, it didnât save it on there
Despite me saving it through the Linux mint settings
put it directly in /etc/default/grub...
does it boot if you manually add it again?
Yes
Let's see.. open the terminal and type
cat /etc/default/grub.d/98_mintsysadm.cfg
then show us system administration window
Add the parameter and press save
After it's done repeat the terminal command
cat /etc/default/grub.d/98_mintsysadm.cfg
Getting a lot of these errors btw after installing nvidia drivers. They donât stop me from booting the PC or turning it off.
let's not jump around - one problem at a time
Yeah.
By the way, it worked
Does it boot normally then?
Yes.
It will show the Linux mint sticker and then show the login screen
Unfortunately, I think the garbage BIOS will prevent Nvidia GPU to work properly
đ«
Since you're in the terminal anyway, run
sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade -y
to update the system
Restart after it's done
I need to go, @stray tundra you take over please
Except helping find BIOS update... I will not help much
Alright, finished updating.
already did
The only error messages I was seeing was coming from Nvidia from the previous screenshots provided
Alright now what?
then install this... thing
http://www.hp.com/go/hpsupportassistant
For automated fixes, personalized support, and automatic updates, try HP Support Assistant today.
And try to find an update for your BIOS
don't ask me how that work, I have no idea
never used this
search something related to BIOS update
if you found nothing, then...
complain to HP
Gotta restart my PC in order to access the update screen.
Although it's not really doing anything when I hit Restart Now.
Even after a restart, it still asks me to restart. But clicking the restart button on it's application does absolutely nothing. HP's apps were always so shit.
Guess I can't update the BIOS.
Try that :
- Turn on the computer, and then press f10 repeatedly. The BIOS Setup utility is displayed.
- Select Check HP.com for BIOS Updates.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to check whether a BIOS update is available.
- If a BIOS update is available, follow the on-screen instructions to update the BIOS.
Check HP.com for BIOS Updates. was not an option in the BIOS.
Here's a link from their support page for your model https://support.hp.com/lt-en/drivers/hp-pavilion-gaming-desktop-pc-tg01-2000i/model/2100405426?sku=33V37AA
If you go in device firmwar revision ? (main page in BIOS)
you got it...
how ?
Through hp support site?
yes, but, how ? serial number ?
ok, serial number crash website on my side
but I guess this is because I'am stuck in the french website
and this hardware si probably country specific
I imagine they'd have different serial or product number then.
You got the bios file ?
lets go... hope they fixed their sh*t...
Well that was quick.
Let's hope windows defender didn't get in the way ))
......And he was never seen again ))
Nah I'm back. Though my PC did have an odd seizure after the installation.
Kept turning on and off rapid-fire like a riffle gun.
BIOS update usually do such thing
Alright, now what should I do?
Are you in mint?
In Windows currently.
You restart and go to your BIOS to check version, and check options appeared
Go back to mint and show us what
inxi -Mxxx
says now
Either works
and it probably resumed secure boot
Where to look.
And check sata mode too
and Sata mode yes
...again
Ok, In Device Options
I wonder if can boot without acpi parameter now
That's the first thing I would try
What to do in terminal
I bet this IRQ thing has something to do with VRAM memory etc..
I think if you go through the grub menu and e you can just delete the acpi word for 1 time test
Black screen
Go back to mint?
yeah
Ok now what
Once in, open driver manager and show us what it says after it loads
really now....
what does
inxi -Gxxx
say?
hmm.. type
dpkg -l | grep nvidia
Ok.... let's try a non-open variant.
sudo apt install nvidia-driver-580 -y
space after 580
After it's done, restart and show what
inxi -Gxxx
says now
Stubborn. What does
dmesg | grep -i nvidia
say?
I am pretty sure this is a Resize-BAR/Above 4G Decoding case, but the BIOS does not allow to configure it, so....
Uhh, itâs a long output of just thisâŠ
Pages long.
there, it ask for pci=biosirq... thar irq we have to disable to properly boot
Start and end of the output.
not the exact same, but it seem pretty clear that it is related
Where you seeing that?
Right... we did set no irq for pci
Ohhh
@dull spoke Go to system administration and add pci=biosirq as a second parameter. don't forget to save
Restart?
and
dmesg | grep -i nvidia
Buy a true motherboard, with new case, put the RTX, RAM and CPU on new motherboard... and throw this HP motherboard
đš
no kidding, it worth the investment
đ€
You already have CPU, RAM and Graphic Card... all you need is a proper Motherboard
What do you want to do @dull spoke ? keep trying or not?
Iâm down to keep trying
Might take a little break here for a bit.
Do note that there is no clean solution, something is gonna be crpppled one way or another
Yep
Ok, then let's backpedal. remove these 2 and add noapic
save, restart and show new
cat /proc/cmdline ; inxi -Gxxx
Just in case, if you want a replacement Motherboard, you should find a Z590 with LGA1200... either MSI, ASUS or Gigabyte...
And you'll probably need a new ATX medium case, because I think the HP format is proprietary
It's late here, so I'll be going for today
Oh, Iâm seeing something a little different.
Shows nvidia for the driver instead of n/a.
Seems like gpu is working now. I'd leave it at that, it's a small miracle already that we got this much to work
@stray tundra @tender plinth Thank you guys so much for your help! Sorry for my motherboard being crap and causing trouble getting Linux Mint setup on it. I was aware the PC had a strange warranty on it that insisted I don't tamper with the PC in anyway (installing another OS, dual-booting, etc) or else I can't send it back. Despite the warrenty period already having ended 2-3 years ago lol. Not sure if that's related, but yee.
Thanks so much! KirbyExcited
It's not directly linked... HP make crap BIOS, that's notorious. The warrenty tell more about how HP "think" their computer, and it's like Microsoft in a way : This is not "your" computer, this is the HP's computer that HP allowed you to use it in exchange of money... therefore you cannot do what you want with your "non-really owned" computer.
Therefore, nobody should be surprised to discover that HP is the first company to literally rent computer with subscriptions...
You're welcome )
Oh? I didn't know that last part. With every new Windows release, they do more and more try to insinuate that you don't really own your PC. That I was aware of. Which is stupid because you have the physical thing, and you can't tamper it however you want?
Kinda like with Nintendo consoles, you own the device, why can't you mod it?
