#download speeds so awful compared to windows

how do you measure download speeds?
if it is when downloading software with the built in package manager, it might be a mirror issue
well for one thing in steam I'm getting a max of 18 mbps
for the past 3 days
or ever since I installed mint
and I went to speed test website
pretty sad compared to when I was in windows
it was four times that in windows
it's just everything I download that's very slow
Have you checked drivers and considedered how many apps are running in-background
not many apps just firefox and steam running
when I go to driver manager just video card driver is listed
better knowing what wifi chip exactly... I probably can't help, but you should anyway paste result of inxi -Nxx
Network:
Device-1: Intel Cannon Lake PCH CNVi WiFi driver: iwlwifi v: kernel
bus-ID: 00:14.3 chip-ID: 8086:a370
Wireless-AC 9560
what is your usual download speed ?
do you have a second computer to download from/to locally ?
nope
this laptop came with windows, then I wiped and installed mint
and I was getting much higher speeds in windows, before I switched to mint
I mean you don't have secondary computer to test local transfer
I googled my problem and others on reddit experience the same deal
For what I saw, it seem related to 5Ghz vs 2.4GHz
it's just bizarre
you don't have USB-Ethener adapter to test I guess...
afraid not
Try changing configuration on your access point, to force some WIFI standard
for example, if it allow 802.11bgn, try forcing n or aconly
so what do I type in the terminal
In you Linux terminal, nothing, this has to be configured in your Wifi AP/Router admin interface
this has nothing to do with Linux
its all about your ISP router
The thing your internet provider give you to connect to...
unfortunatley I have no control over it because I live in a group home and I'm renting
ok...
it's a linux problem because when I'm in windows I get much higher speeds
yes... but, but forcing wifi standard we may spot the problem...
You can try disabling power saving...
that's the only thing I can suggest
So, to do this, go in terminal, and type sudo nano /etc/NetworkManager/conf.d/default-wifi-powersave-on.conf
replace the 3 to 2 then press Ctrl+X, confirm save, and restart computer
they alr said they've tried that
ok, so I have no idea...
yeah, I did the 3 to 2 thing didnt help
