I put Linux Mint on a laptop and desktop. Everything went smoothly. I'm doing it again on my Asus laptop. I have the flash drive in the laptop before booting. I go to the setup to boot off the drive but it's not showing up there on this computer. How do I find it?
I thought it needed to maybe be mounted so I followed instructions on how to do that in the terminal, (currently running Cosmic which I hate). I got a WARNING: source write-protected, mounted read-only.
Do I have to flash a new drive from the computer I want to put Mint on?
.....I did find in the boot setup menu where to create a new boot option but I don't know exactly what to type in so my system sees the USB flash drive with Mint on it.
#Flash drive invisible in boot menu.

Make sure the USB stick hardware is functional and that the partition table is GPT. Some UEFI firmware setups are picky about it.
what temmie said.
The USB stick is functional. I just used it to install Mint on 2 other computers.
#1295816480256163892 message
yeah but some BIOS's are extremely picky
such as new Asus or Acer
see step 4b in the link
I don't know how to do GPT or whatever.
also if you're sure the stick is already formatted in GPT style, then
well there's two guides in that link, one for ventoy, and the other for Rufus
then show the BIOS screens related to boot stuff, since some by default have 'boot from external device' prohibited
Oh....I used a different app to flash it....ummm starts with a B...
Etcher
Yes
let's have a quick look at the usb shall we?
pop it into a working Windows or Linux computer
and load up the real OS
tell me when at desktop
Flash is in port and running Cosmic currently.
cosmic..
ok so, see if it comes with the Disks application
u can also fire it up from terminal: gnome-disks
Ok I have a list
the program opened?
I see the San disk flash drive there
click it
on the left side of DISKS app
then look at the lines of info near top
what's the Partitioning style ?
Looks like 2
.
The /dev/sdc1 ?
just show a pic.......
K
of the complete window.
it said right on the fourth line
is this the same computer you want to live-boot Mint off of, to install overtop of POP?
Yes
aight
show result of inxi -M in terminal plz
as a cursory estimate, you just need to redo the USB with GPT using ventoy.
Not found days I need to sudo apt install inxi
now the result
Gives me my system type, model, and UEFI
so it says literally UEFI before a date of it?
11/08/2018
and what is the date
ok nvm
run one line for info: df -h && mokutil --sb
does the df result show a line about efivars?
Yes
if it does and secure boot shows off, you're good to proceed
Want screen shot?
just follow this guide, 6 simple steps (plus read the added notes) and u should be able to boot Mint up to live mode
close the Disks app first too. after ventoy is installed, you might need to unplug and replug the USB to see it properly in file manager. then continue with step 6 @tepid loom
So I need to re flash Mint on the stick with Ventoy?
I can't use the current flashed with etcher?
nah your ASUS can't see it. it's MBR style
Ok
alternatively, Rufus using GPT should also work
It worked on my old hp pavilion and my acer but I guess Asus is super picky
It's more modern... Modern Bios does not support MBR anymore
except, maybe, if you force CMS/Legacy Mode, but it tend to disapear
if you use that, then you'll boot legacy-style and end up with a possibly missbooting installation
unless u do a proper hard drive wipe and reformat to MBR style and apply manual settings in the installer
Someone else told me I could otherwise disable secure boot and make sure USB boot is enabled..which I think it is. I put Pop Os on this same computer a long time ago but I might have flashed with a different app back then too.
But they said I should be able to boot off the etcher stick if secure boot is disabled. 🤔
.
any news on this, @tepid loom ?
and btw, it's not Secure Boot at all. If the BIOS boot menu can't even see the drive plugged in....
go into BIOS setup, and ensure it's on UEFI and look at bootables list.
Secure Boot would cause interference AFTER attempting to boot from a device.
I didn't have time to go any further with this issue. I'm hoping to get it figured out this weekend. I will update then. Thanks for asking 🙂.
just ventoy it. takes 10 seconds
even if u dont copy any ISO over
it'll likely show up and boot to an empty white ventoy screen
@tepid loom
That sounds the easiest.
leave all checkmarks as shown in pic
Ok
Ok....my work break is over now...thanks for the info.
k
@plucky basin are you available?
Can someone please help me with Ventoy? I don't know which of these to use?
For Linux - GUI mode
Method 1: Linux GUI (GTK/QT)
Method 2: Linux GUI (WebUI)
For Linux - CLI mode
I am running Linux Cosmic on my system currently.
And do I put Ventoy on the computer or the USB? I am confused.
gtk/qt
the USB stick
#1295816480256163892 message
it's all there. 6 simple steps, plus added notes
I am trying...and I found a video to help but I keep getting this....sudo: ./Ventoy2Disk.sh: command not found
tried installing other programs to run rufus like bottles and wine but niether of them are working
you have to be in the same directory as the script
don't use rufus, mint has a built-in tool
I don't have mint yet on this computer
I am running cosmic but want to switch to mint
ohhh
I hate cosmic
got it up now what?
syntax is sudo dd if=/path/to/image.iso of=/dev/DEVICE bs=4096 status=progress
I already downloaded mint to the computer
i gtg sleep
ur using the wrong freaking thing
read the guide i sent u
I did but I was confused
there's absolutely zero mention of an sh file
I was confused and looked up a video which gave me a download link for ventoy in the terminal. 🤷♀️
plug ur blankable usb in, and do step 3b now
let me get to that on my phone
ok step 3b...
I guess I should redownload ventoy and start over
one min
just follow steps 1 to 3b and tag me if confused
I have to redownload ventoy because I already trashed it.....
fine. extract the whole archive
its in a folder named ventoy- 1.1.10-linux
dragging that line only to the terminal
you in the ventoy folder, drag the ventoy GUI 64 file over as it says
a FILE
not a FOLDER.
did u get the program open?
it's a little hard to drag it becuse my terminal is a seperate window that keeps disappearing when I grab the line and I try to drop it in the terminal at the bottom of my screen but it's not going there
mkay
right click in a blank section between files IN the file manager
in the ventoy extracted folder, of course
and choose "open terminal here"
got terminal open there?
not seeing that option...
ooof
what a POS pop os is
show your file manager please. the whole thing
take good pic or use screenshot
stupid cosmic version
it's still pop os
...
show your file manager please. the whole thing
press Ctrl-L so it should expose the location / address bar
take good pic or use screenshot
i presume it will result in someting like /home/username
ooops lol
yeah shows my username etc
cd to ~/Downloads/ventoy-1.1.10-linux
do not include any quotation marks unless i specifically say to
cd ~/Downloads/ventoy-1.1.10-linux
you there?
it should now show that path in the prompt
it says bash downloads ventoy is a directory
put this line in EXACTLY
Downloads/ventoy-1.1.10-linux: Is a directory
but no quotes, since Discord puts hidden quotes
ok pwd to confirm please
@tepid loom
cd ~/Downloads/ventoy-1.1.10-linux/ventoy-1.1.10
tag me when you're in it.
the prompt left of the $ sign will show your "present working directory" as does the pwd command
The command shows the download
from their website, and once you're in the proper folder in the prompt:
3. UsageOpen the terminal and directly execute the corresponding file in the above table.
Take the most commonly used x86 64-bit OS for example, just execute./VentoyGUI.x86_64
PLEASE be in the right DAMN folder!!!
and do ./VentoyGUI.x86_64
I am sorry I put in the comand exactly as you typed it
cd ~/Downloads/ventoy-1.1.10-linux/ventoy-1.1.10
~/Downloads/ventoy-1.1.10-linux/ventoy-1.1.10$
the 2nd line it what came up
do this
this is all made ridiculous cuz ficking cosmic tiling window horseSHIT
i know
That u cant just fkn drag n drop a file
bash: ./VentoyGUI.x86_64: No such file or directory
yeah with just the old pop os I would have had no problem
this should show a list of files. directories start with a d, and are usually blue.
why...
?
WHY did u go back to the home folder???
cd ~/Downloads/ventoy-1.1.10-linux/ventoy-1.1.10
I typed in the ls -l
do that and STAYH THERE
cd ~/Downloads/ventoy-1.1.10-linux/ventoy-1.1.10
hit up arrow
one min
til u get old thing that matches what i just put
I put in the command and same as before that second line comes up with the $ at the end
does that go at the end of that line because if I hit enter the same line appears
did it prompt for admin rights pw?
no, if I hit enter the same line keeps copying itself
dot-slash means 'run this shit'
so do I put that line after ?
(Ventoy2Disk.gtk3:49109): Gtk-WARNING **: 19:02:44.580: cannot open display: :1
bailey@pop-os:~/Downloads/ventoy-1.1.10-linux/ventoy-1.1.10$

Ventoy is an open source tool to create bootable USB drive for ISO files. With ventoy, you don't need to format the disk again and again, you just need to copy the iso file to the USB drive and boot it.
what's shown there should be what u see
in its lower screenshots
if not, that's ok
could be cuz dumb POP OS and its Wayland horseshit
Ventoy is an open source tool to create bootable USB drive for ISO files. With ventoy, you don't need to format the disk again and again, you just need to copy the iso file to the USB drive and boot it.
k
the one u minimized
yes
does it look exactly like this now?
yes but with that warning line
k try to keep up
I have the line clean as b4
looks like this now ur prompt?
yes
sudo bash VentoyWeb.sh
open browser and visit http://127.0.0.1:24680
or ctrl+leftclick the address in terminal
ventoy server is running
.
match this
absolutely not
One min
my bad...I am sorry...I got it now..I've been at this for a few hours...frustrated too
ready to install then?
Don't update?
show screenshot
ok so don't update got it
earlier I downloaded mint to this computer
good copy , keyword being copy. it over
did u close terminal ?
to exit the webGUI launcher command?
then replug the usb stick
mint is in my downloads
copy/paste the ISO
it is copying to ventoy
let it rest after done
then step 7
btw, this whole ventoy thing only needs to be done on this stick ONCE.
afterwhich u can just add or delete ISOs at will, at any point in time
I got that...and hopefully never need to go thru this again..as I said from the get go...I had no trouble installing mint from a reg usb using etcher on my other 2 computers...but this asus is super picky
it should work with this now as u've created the stick
it appears to be complete, it doesn't show it's copying anymore
let it rest
according to the chart in #📘wiki F8 is your boot menu key for Asus, which u will press upon restarting the computer at POST time
check mokutil --sb in terminal
what does it result?
i forgot u had Mint PC's. ventoying the stick would've taken 2 minutes at most on that
says I have to install mokutil
sudo apt install mokutil
oh sorry I forgot to mention that
mokutil installed
ok ruun the thing i put earlier
secure boot disabled
aight showtime
lol
goodluck
hit f8
upon immediate POST
power comes on, Asus logo appears, hit f8
hit it twice or thrice even if needed
then u should see a vtoyefi (partition2) of 32GB USB
boot from it
I did
well go to interface
Im in the bios
Oh
move boot option 3 to priority number 1
How? I hit enter but it didn't change
follow the hints it shows on the side or bottom for how to change values of a selected item
once at the top of priority list, then save/exit bios
let it reboot
Do not save and exit?
of coursseeee save
try plug stick to different usb port
firmly
then turn pc back on and dont touch anything
I'm getting a something is seriously wrong warning. I'll try to take a pic
F8 took me back to the original boot screen
Forget f8
shown here
.....somehow pop is back on the boot option 1
fix it
if still not work, go back to bios: security section> clear all keys
F10 go on.....
Getting this again....computer is mad
clear the keys
Reboot to bios hopefully
Ok I had to press esc to get to here otherwise it kept shutting down
Go to setup? Or is one of these my Ventoy?
"enter setup:"
.
might be worded bit differently
I don't know how to clear the keys
show all the options in Security
into the Secure Boot item
there has to be more. show whole screen of it, in landscape
go here
then here....
I did. I have secure boot menu highlighted. Then arrow key takes me to the next screen. Same thing.
go to Platform mode, and change value to 'setup'
or whatever other options it can do
that or u may have to turn Secure boot on to get to the keys thing
Up/down arrows are supposed to select item but its not
Trying to select platform mode
go into 'key management'
Scarey place to be tbh but I'm following along as best I can
press enter on 'Delete all Secure Boot variables'
Ok
does that list all clear up after?
I must have to esc to exit this screen
Ok esc to security screen
Now I see the tabs on top
.
then save/exit
and do not touch the keyboard til ventoy shows up
press enter
then enter again
then enter again....
and let mint live, boot up. 2 minutes
Enter again in normal mode I presume
moral of the modern Asus story:
- use ventoy in GPT-style partition mode to prep USB
- set boot order to UEFI USB as #1 , or use F8 key for boot menu choices to start USB up
- clear MOK keys in BIOS if too many clogged up the process to boot and error of such shows
- proceed to live boot any OS off USB
Once this is installed....do I need to go back into the bios and change secure boot and keys back?
nope
How come? I mean with secure boot? What's that prevent from being enabled exactly?
just dont even think about it. it's solved.
Lol ok....I am extremely grateful for all your help.
if you ever do put secure boot back on, then
**
**
https://youtu.be/CuonyS3xdwg?t=303 <<5:03 ThioJoe Ventoy Secure Boot enroll steps
and you'll also have to do some crap with secure boot off and make some sb password in mint via terminal, then reboot with secure boot on and register mint, just like the vid shows him registering ventoy
Jeeze....
Ok
I don't remember this screen from last time. I'm assuming it's a good to continue.
Ok
The installer crashed....that's a first
show error
It's gone already it went to home screen but the installer won't work now. This didn't happen b4.
Umm
that's why it crashed. u nudged the usb or it's in a shitty loose port
Told me to remove the installation medium so I pulled the stick out then it did that
just hold power button for 7 seconds
til it's off
then fit the usb stick to a SNUG-fitting port
and turn back on n boot ventoy and mint back to the desktop
Ok ....that was wierd...it's rebooting mint
I have to go thru the setup process again. Waiting for my network to show up on the list. It took a few minutes last time.
dont launch installer
I already did. I'm at the network screen.
Ok it's closed
pick hard drive and follow picture
?
.
I'm sorry....how? With terminal?
Apply,
?
Now?
My screen doesn't look exactly like your pic so I want to make sure b4 I apply.
yes
Ok
done?
Ok
yes click add
Ok
then r-click the unalloc'd space again: "new"
Ok
Confused about why I had to do this....this time on this computer.
Sorry for the bad pic
Leave the numbers in the file size?
I only have + and - in the for the size box.
Is this correct?
Done
when it finishes completely, right click sda1
it's fine click the big checkmark
choose "manage flags" and put the esp and boot flags for sda1
Ok
Save details or just close it?
Guessing I save details.
Not seeing anything about managing flags
But I haven't saved details yet either.
I don't know which partition I'm supposed to be on.
I never had to do anything like this b4.
I'm sorry, are you still there?
right click sda1
Right click on that after saving details,?
fjcj the details
I just don't want to miss a step
gedt that fkn details shi out of there
yep
ok close gparted
Pk
run up installer, n choose the 'something else' option
By that you mean clicking on the install mint?
That takes me to the setup
Sorry, not sure what you mean by run up installer. There's not a something else option.
ofc run the install icon
Yes, I'm in the setup mode now.
Select language, etc.
Now I'm on the select network screen. Still no something else option.
Ok, I'm waiting for my network to appear.
do an offline install
show the chart
well scroll it down
put 'device for bootloader installation' to /dev/sda1
then click sda2 in the chart and click Change
read up
Ok didn't know i right click to change
This is how it was. I didn't change anything yet.
This stuff is beyond anything I've ever done b4 so it's a little confusing.

Sorry what am I missing?
u see the slash yes or no?

copy that but no format tick for sda2 . then install
yes goooo
I have no data to worry about. I just want this to be right so I can successfully install mint on this stupid laptop.
So hit continue here?
yep
Are you helping me now instead of the other guy?
maybe
😳
I hit continue and I'm here now.
I just wanted to install mint. I didn't know I was gonna have to do all these other things I've never done b4 so I apologize.
Why are manually setting up partitions?
You don't have to do that. back out of the menu and click on erase disk an install linuxmint.
no it does it for you
Ok 😥
I'm clicking on the installer now.
I have to wait for my network to show up to continue.
Ok here's where I'm at now.
All good so far?
yes
10-4
Omg....it's working! ....I hope.
I've been at this all day. 🙄
This computer did not want to use my etcher stick.
I installed mint on 2 other computers with no problem but this one...I had to turn off secure boot and keys, etc.
Then I had to install Ventoy and now I'm here.
@plucky basin ur buns a new user doesn't need your method of installing and OP would have been fine after booting the live environment.
I removed the stick as instructed by the system and rebooted and I am on my log in screen now so I think I'm on the right track now.
Looking good. I'm on the welcome screen!
@obsidian coral THANK YOU!
Your welcome
I think what happened earlier was I pulled the stick out too early and the installer or whatever crashed and he thought there was another problem....idk. But it's all good now. I'm where I want to be now and shouldn't have any other problems other than not knowing if I need to re enable secure boot and fast boot and my keys are all undone.🤷♀️
I don't use secure boot on my pc. also never use fast boot.
Ok, well they are disabled now. Wtb the keys?
He had me do something to that too.
All the pics are way back in the chat.
I found the keys pic
if secure boot is of then you don't need them.
