Honestly I'm purely just curious if I could use something as lightweight as LXQt on Linux Mint. Really I just need something light for a low power laptop. XFCE works well but I'm just curious if I can go lower.

Core 2 Duo with 4GB of RAM (Planning to upgrade to 8)

Try

sudo apt install lxqt

make a timeshift backup first

you can try, but don't switch back and forth. Qt destkops don't mesh well with GTK-based ones like xfce

once done as maniak said, log out, and pick the lxqt session from login screen chooser icon.
