#Can't boot into mint
218 messages · Page 1 of 1 (latest)
@slate perch can u help?
I try to reinstall the OS in the external SSD
But failed
boot Mint live USB up. In the live destkop, search Disks in the start menu, open it, click the main hdd/ssd and show a good pic of the entire window (not maximized)
The main hdd is still the same as before since I still boot windows normally
show it.
.
bad bad place to put a swap partition
turn off Fast Startup in WINDOWS
Then reinstall linux Mint.
and dont jam a swap partition between the two
Wait that is the one I put after successfully pulled this off few months ago
The ext4 on the 512GB disk is just a volume with some games
I never have that on
show the partition where linux resides. click it and photograph
also, click the play icon first
before taking a picture
click on the blue link under it
find the etc folder
go into it, and find the fstab file, and double-click it to open it, then maximize the editor
and show.
why do u have a boot partition? is the installation encrypted?
this is such a filthy mess, putting swap on the nvme
Bc I did last time
it's dumb
unless it's encryption, YOU DONT NEED A BOOT PARTITION
Only efi, and root
Bro, I only turn it on when I play games
So what should I do now?
Last time I pulled it off with those created
this is such a mess
So I have to reinstall
.
did it finish?
well fix ur bios order to load the ubuntu from that exact drive and partition it says
Uhhh how?
Uhhh what should I do?
.
So I have to visit the uefi setting?
that's right
boot section
go back to security. this uefi is complete garbage. it should show the entries and devices easily
not just 'WINDOWS BOOT MANAGER"
select uefi file as trusted
direct it to this file
Now should I disable secure boot and the pass word
Just did
Why it said Lock-nvram this time
did it work?
i'd suggest reinstalling linux to the external SSD and make it EMPTY
100000% EMPTY
and not messy!!
backup anything on that lexar u need to keep, then wipe it using gparted
The new year's goal of reinstalling Mint after I mess it up with some stupid Android emulator is so fucking hard
later on
Ok
if u wish to keep Windows stuff there, or else make it BTRFS, and use windows btrfs driver
Ok
and make 1000% SURE you UNFLAG the nvme efi partition first!!!!!
after u backup everything u need OFF of the LEXAR...
Ok
THEN do that ^^
make SURE to choose right drive!!
(the lexar one)
and make sure to unflag nvme0n1p1
I think I have to backup the lexar device first
I still got 2 days left to get this done
Before returning to school
Unflag these?
yes. rightclick p1: manage flags
@steady bolt after all of this I just need to reinstall it?
yes, did you blank out your Lexar drive?
then install onto it, you can simply choose 'erase and install' and choose the correct dev name for the lexar
or u can do manual mode, and make sure to follow this pic:
Already did?
i know, that's the name of the option
for automatic mode
^ 'something else' aka manual mode
Wait
put the right drive names in for your case
u installed again?
Yes
show result of sudo parted -l and lsblk -f from a maximized terminal plz
Maybe I unironically prove that install mint on e-SSD is possible without removing the internal drive
i will soon see
Ok
That one or the one next to it?
Wait i did it?
u can also label partition 2 as MINT
and partition 3 as whatever you want
i said hit the gear, not the stop button
I think I need to remove "ubuntu" on the i-ssd esp first
u also now have to reflag the partition 1 of ur other disk that u unflagged. put boot, and esp on it and remove "msftdata"
u need gparted for that. can boot live, or install here
show result of lsblk -o name, type, model, size, partuuid
and efibootmgr
all in same photo
and dont take pic far away
do sudo efibootmgr -b 0000 -B to delete old loader of ubuntu
u can see boot current what and where it leads
this is a lot better, except for the unnecessary 7 MB gap at the front
Ok
Should I create a linux-swap on the i-ssd
I mean the owners won't know what kind of partition it is
Uh I accidentally deleted it
i would say that you should make a swap file , not a swap partition , to reside on the lexar. of 2 GiB size
instructions here: #1200928716415566005 message and small vid above it
I think I just need to recreate that swap partition
Just wanted to play WT
currently, u have no swap at all
just make a 2 (or more) gig file on the lexar
as per the link.
Created one in the 512 gb ssd
ok just know that u must only operate linux on this pc then. because now it expects that nvme to always be there
dont forget to edit fstab
run lsblk -f again, to get the uuid for the new swap
and put UUID= (that number) plus the other parameters
it'll crash with no swap
should have at least 1 GB or 2
idk how big u just made that swap partition
Only when I play some triple-A games
10?
u made it 10 GB?
Uh that's how much I needed for Hoi4
For WT the 8GB of the laptop is enough
oh it is.
i guess u turned it on via DISKS app
anyway, dont forget the flags on ur nvme p1
then ur all set
Ok
@steady bolt anyway do you know some “fun to play” free game that runs on Linux since I don't want to visit 1337x to download it
and if u want Windows to read the btrfs partition u made, u gotta get proper driver for that function
It doesn't matter maybe I will sort it out later
try crazygames.com
SOLVED (reinstalled linux mint on external drive with dedicated efi system partition there)
Most of them have something to do with “love” or “relationship”…
Maybe I should find some in 1337x
