Hope this is the right place to post this. I'm also not well versed in this at all.
I usually start by putting a version of mint on the older devices I get, and it always either works, or does not work at all.
This ones acting weird tho. I've tried so many things already, but it keeps getting stuck right here, no matter what I try.
The internet wasn't able to help me, so I'm hoping someone here can, because I really don't want this pretty thing to suffer with Vista any longer.
#2008 asus laptop stuck on boot

try the older Mint version. 21.3 which has older kernel that may not present this issue. get that 21.3 in the XFCE version.
or for maximum performance, try AntiX 64-bit full on it, or secondarily, MX Fluxbox
It seems to be getting stuck on thesame thing, though more/different stuff is displayed, so you might be able to get more out of this.
Like the previous time, I tried multiple times with multiple versions, same thing kept happening.
Except for this that I randomly got once. Again, no idea what it means, but it says intel so that might hint at the problem? I really don't know.
which precise version u tried? down to the number
Uh, I have no idea.
well look at the iso files u downloaded. they have the full version name and number right in the filename
Ohh, as in 21.3? Like you said I should.
so thus far 22.2, and 21.3 Linux Mint
Yes! Both the cinnamon and xfce versions.
out of all 4, none reached the live desktop?
Nope, they all stopped at thesame point.
do you suspect this computer has an nvidia video card?
(which at that age, 2008, is unsupported now, but software mode could work)
It does, yeah.. Have already seen and followed plenty of online threads that go over nvidia issues.
Though I've yet to hear about software mode, whats that about?
in live boot, it's caled "compatibility mode" try xfce with it
Oh yeah no I've tried that with all versions, same result as always.
well try MX fluxbox
if it doesnt boot, then puppy linux. if that wont. then maybe Haiku (not linux).
Meh. Other options kind of worry me.
This laptop is meant to return to an older, not super tech savvy person, and mint works really well with those types of people.
I'm not sure about the options you've named here, but they certainly look a lot less friendly, yk?
Hmm, I've seen Lubuntu come up as an alternate option to mint a lot in forums, so I guess I'll give that one a try. And if that doesn't work, I'll start messing around with the other ones you named.
With reluctance that is. I really enjoy the consistency mint, especially after windows.

Okay so I've since tried a few of the options you've named + some other ones I came across, and literally none work. They all seem to get stuck right before going to the desktop. It just freezes.
Figured I should give up and instead go for the not so old reliable windows 10, but no, that does even less. I just get a flickering windows logo.
The only thing I've been able to make work (besides vista) is windows 7. But I'd rather not settle on that.
I'm starting to look at hardware now, maybe you can get something out of that?
Either way, the laptop claims to be an asus pro72sl. But online sources claim that model got released in 2009 with windows 7, which contradicts the receipt from 2008 and vista. Either way, the hardware seems to match.
