I would like to set up a dual boot on my PC, but I have a small problem. Windows absolutely refuses to shrink the partition because there are some system files that I really can’t find. I’ve tried things like turning off virtual memory, disabling hibernation and Fast Startup, turning off system restore points, removing the pagefile, and setting the disk to defragment, running disk cleanup, but I still have only about 6.8 GB free. I am not sure what else is there. I dont think I want to just start deleting random system files.
Then I tried using GParted through a live Linux Mint USB, but it gave me some error that I couldn’t even read because it basically didn’t show me anything. So I don’t know why it didn’t work. I know I probably should have used the terminal for it to show me what exactly went wrong but I panicked I messed up the disk and immediately tried booting into Windows, to see if everything works fine.
I will be honest, I don’t know what it did, because Windows still boots and there are no weird things visible in Disk Management, but chkdsk /f doesn’t work, so it probably did something. Like, I have to reboot the pc for it to work. If you have any ideas about what to do and how, that would be great.
Should I try using an external tool? Should I try to do a clean reinstall of Windows and immediately after install Mint too? I have everything saved on an external HDD. Is there somehting else I can do? Did I mess up my SSD?
