#Distro on a 64gb stick

dont
yes, ventoy is capable of that,i read. u need to enable and set the reserved space with "Option" ---> "Partition Configuration" (Windows) or "-r" option (Linux).
maybe an additional step (remount) is also needed.
all in the documentation.
Don't don't me 🤑
Alr I'll try tom or later 🤑
i see now you came from https://discord.com/channels/628978428019736619/1427206791728599050 and you are using ventoy already...
ok do if you want
Wait ventor does that ?
well... i didn't try it by myself.
lol no its fine
Ig I'll see later 🙏
It's not recommended, it puts a lot of stress on the flash storage
And they're really slow too
Just experienced it first hand 😭
... but NOW i did and it works! i created a GUID partition table (GPT) and then an exFAT partition.
here's the deal:
- splitting a thumb drive with ventoy wont save any changes, only files you create or save to the other part
- ventoy has a persistence option, setup through a dat file, and the vtoy plugin
- rufus, and universal usb installer can do this more easily
- a TRUE full install, (none of the above) requires 2 usbs
(the first three point above just run a live distro, the 2nd and 3rd are considered persistent-live)
and that. ^

mx linux (persistent live capability)

If you mean the internal one.
or install onto an external one, example: #1426219144499564618 message
I'm on a laptop so no way am I getting an external one
I mean internal one
then that's a called a single-drive dualboot
just make sure Windows Fast Startup, and Bitlocker are off on the internal drive
for it to work, or work well with longevity
I don't have windows installed anywhere
I erased it
Formated the whole drive and then installed Linux
just as an FYI, if you do want a portable distro (for light usage, and saves your settings as you wish them to be - check out MX linux and/or miniOS , as they come with that capability for thumb drives)
Can you run Linux on an external drive?
Like an externally add / HDD
Wait I don't think that's how it works 😭
Can an SSD run without being inside the computer ?
Ohh so it's the same for SSD and a storage stick ?
like temmie said, it's not great on a thumb drive
but for sporadic , LIGHT, portable use, it's ok
So it can't run here ?
.
Yeah sorry I'm really dumb
I also sent the image b4 ur message
It's just laggy
So new question 🤑
Can an SSD run without being inside the laptop ?
yes with the dongle
look in link
Al4
in their case, it's a m.2 ssd enclosure to usb c
Ok so to summarize
I can run Linux on it
It works without being on the laptop
It saves data written on it
yes. one caveat
But where does it get it's memory? From the laptop itself ?
Hmm?
in that guy's case, he had to use boot repair tool, with advanced option
i kept telling him, take the internal ssd/hdd out before installing to the external, but he simply couldnt
Can't I just plug it in my laptop, sense it as another external drive then use an external stick to install Linux on it ?
Yeah " easy " 😭🙏🥀
install externally on a desktop pc then
Even my dad who's an IT specialist is scared to open laptops
Much easier on a PC but in that guys case, he has a laptop
And laptops aren't usually disassembled
unlike Windows, the distro can be used on another laptop/pc after installed externally
Oh alr
It should work ?
(and it will, easily, if u unplug other drives)
Trying it now
Got a 750gb hdd
Helo
Help
Nyarch isn't detecting my hdd
Nvm it sensed it
It just won't let me download it
try reconnecting the cable
also damn this gui is really the same as the partition editor in the mint installer
whats the problem in here
in such cases, where you took all other drives out, you simply use the 'erase and install' option. no sense fiddling around with manual installation like so, if you're not an expert!
otherwise, you gotta edit the sdb1 with the button. set up a 100 to 300 MB EFI partition, then setup a 75 to 700 GIB ext4 partition for linux root, mountpoint is /
So apparently my new drive wasn't a got drive...
you mean a good drive?
GUID partition table.
u can fix that up easily from gparted in the live desktop
@shut raven
it shouldnt matter anyway at all
as long as there's an EFI partition, and a root partition
and the drive's smaller than or equal to 2 TiB for mbr partition schemes
Idk it was a Toshiba drive so it's pretty old
doesnt matter as long as it's in good health
did u wipe and redo it as shown above?
did u pull out the internal drive on a desktop pc, (disconnect) and then install linux to the external yet?
So many fancy words let me process it 🥀
What my answer is from what I understand: the hdd I just got it from my dad Idk if it was from an old laptop or not and I have another drive in my laptop ( forgive my answer it's very dumb since I am dumb 🤑)
Did 10 times
It won't let me install on the external hdd
do u have this?
@sour narwhal my friend gave me smth I'll try it first
Image isn't loading
what?
No I have the full case
Don't have one
bring your usb thumb drive with mint iso
Only the portable one
ok boot up the live usb stick
Js don't ask I don't like revealing it in public 🙏
then plug the external hdd once at desktop
Alr
So once I'm in the stick, I plug in the drive ?
u got something like that , using the boot menu key at power-on?
Ok new problem that I think is causing me not to be able to download things on the hdd
do cat /etc/issue n state result
LM 22.1 xia \n \l
i thought u were installing nyaarch?
well which ever bugger u expect to install ofc
make sure as uefi like in pic here
F2 for dynabook motherboard ?
i guess
whatever gets u to a boot devices menu
when u get to ventoy screen look at bottom left corner
it should be saying UEFI
I got jumpscared...
It was showing Linux mint logo then it suddenly jumped to terminal 😭
1.1.07 uefi
minimize it
open terminal,
maximize terminal
and do sudo parted -l
and also whereis gparted
and show
Sorry 🙏
also u must plug in ur external drive now
Alr
then repeat sudo parted -l
Atleast someone is staring at you whole you manage my console 🤑
idc
.
connect to the internet on this live environment
u have to get some things first before u can install
How I don't have ethernet
how do u normally connect?
On my main via wifi
Done
Network is unreachable
It's downstairs in a very high place hidden within a locked cabinet with no table to support the laptop
or just test a different way
open a browser
go to whatever website
does it load?
Nah
did u connect to wifi?
are u online now?
Yeah
tested website?
Works
Inxi is hiding from me since even the GPS collar I gave it is gone 💔 ( blank )
It is lowercase I
so it's no path resulting?
None
Ok
It's done
k minimize that
Ok
try press just enter
Still searching
It's not letting me click anything
cuz it will wipe that drive selected
Wait it only fixed now
The only drive showing is my internal drive
click the dropdown box
Ok I saw it
god...
try ignore
ok finally
this is blocking shit. close this program
Wdym
Ok
Ok
Can I add extra to be safe ?
no
Ok
next, go to the VIEW menu in gparted
and select 'show device information'
whatever opens the sidebar info thing
then show photo of the whole window
Ok
show full main window once it's done
ignore
does it complete?
make sure the wires are fitted snug
the SATA part and the usb part
n hit Retry
ignore
does it complete?
Nope
This happened again
ok restart the machine. go to linux Mint and do it.
Ok
got it, @shut raven
It's in the proceA
show gparted in Mint after the 300 MB partition is made
with the sidebar showing too. the FULL window
ook right click on sda1 there (the ESP)
and do 'manage flags'
remove the msftdata flag,
Done
put the boot and esp flag
these are the ONLY TWO flags that should now show in the main window, under the Flags column, for that first partition
is that correct?
Yes sir
ok, right click the remaining free space
Ok
Done
click the big checkmark now
What's a check mark
omggg
Jk
let it apply n make the changes
once it's done, close gparted, and unplug that toshiba drive from the pc
what's the error?
what?
move that FUCKING THING OUT THE WAY
what's the error say behind!?!
or hit save details n show
pop that side arrow down at left
In save details ?
I closed it -_-
🙏
get a better drive.
I can't 🥀
well then forget it
either that usb bridge cable is shit/unreliable or the drive is
Would you buy me an SSD 🥺
no
💔
u can run tests on that external drive on your own time, with the DISKS app in its menus
