Is there a way to fully run a distro straight from a 64gb HP stick with it saving data ?

here's the deal:

#
  • splitting a thumb drive with ventoy wont save any changes, only files you create or save to the other part
#
  • ventoy has a persistence option, setup through a dat file, and the vtoy plugin
#
  • rufus, and universal usb installer can do this more easily
#
  • a TRUE full install, (none of the above) requires 2 usbs
#

(the first three point above just run a live distro, the 2nd and 3rd are considered persistent-live)

#

I'm just gonna split my drive 🙏

sour narwhal
shut raven
shut raven
sour narwhal
#

then that's a called a single-drive dualboot

#

just make sure Windows Fast Startup, and Bitlocker are off on the internal drive

#

for it to work, or work well with longevity

shut raven
#

I erased it

#

Formated the whole drive and then installed Linux

sour narwhal
shut raven
#

Like an externally add / HDD

#

Wait I don't think that's how it works 😭

#

Can an SSD run without being inside the computer ?

sour narwhal
#

i just SAID u can

#

i even linked u the example post

shut raven
sour narwhal
#

like temmie said, it's not great on a thumb drive

#

but for sporadic , LIGHT, portable use, it's ok

shut raven
#

So it can't run here ?

shut raven
#

Yeah sorry I'm really dumb

#

I also sent the image b4 ur message

#

It's just laggy

#

So new question 🤑

#

Can an SSD run without being inside the laptop ?

sour narwhal
#

yes with the dongle

shut raven
sour narwhal
#

in their case, it's a m.2 ssd enclosure to usb c

shut raven
#

Ok so to summarize

#

I can run Linux on it

#

It works without being on the laptop

#

It saves data written on it

sour narwhal
#

yes. one caveat

shut raven
#

But where does it get it's memory? From the laptop itself ?

shut raven
sour narwhal
#

in that guy's case, he had to use boot repair tool, with advanced option

#

i kept telling him, take the internal ssd/hdd out before installing to the external, but he simply couldnt

shut raven
sour narwhal
#

install externally on a desktop pc then

shut raven
#

Even my dad who's an IT specialist is scared to open laptops

shut raven
#

And laptops aren't usually disassembled

sour narwhal
shut raven
#

Oh alr

sour narwhal
#

AS LONG AS THE BOOTLOADER got put right

#

(which means, put on the external)

shut raven
#

It should work ?

sour narwhal
#

(and it will, easily, if u unplug other drives)

shut raven
#

Alr

#

I'll ask my dad if he has an extra SSD

shut raven
#

Trying it now

#

Got a 750gb hdd

#

Helo

#

Help

#

Nyarch isn't detecting my hdd

#

Nvm it sensed it

#

It just won't let me download it

gentle knoll
#

also damn this gui is really the same as the partition editor in the mint installer

gentle knoll
sour narwhal
# shut raven It just won't let me download it

in such cases, where you took all other drives out, you simply use the 'erase and install' option. no sense fiddling around with manual installation like so, if you're not an expert!

#

otherwise, you gotta edit the sdb1 with the button. set up a 100 to 300 MB EFI partition, then setup a 75 to 700 GIB ext4 partition for linux root, mountpoint is /

shut raven
sour narwhal
#

GUID partition table.

#

u can fix that up easily from gparted in the live desktop

#

@shut raven

#

it shouldnt matter anyway at all

#

as long as there's an EFI partition, and a root partition

#

and the drive's smaller than or equal to 2 TiB for mbr partition schemes

shut raven
#

Sorry autocorrect broke it

shut raven
sour narwhal
#

doesnt matter as long as it's in good health

sour narwhal
shut raven
#

Wait

#

I'll start it now

sour narwhal
#

did u pull out the internal drive on a desktop pc, (disconnect) and then install linux to the external yet?

shut raven
#

So many fancy words let me process it 🥀

#

What my answer is from what I understand: the hdd I just got it from my dad Idk if it was from an old laptop or not and I have another drive in my laptop ( forgive my answer it's very dumb since I am dumb 🤑)

shut raven
shut raven
sour narwhal
shut raven
#

@sour narwhal my friend gave me smth I'll try it first

shut raven
sour narwhal
#

what?

shut raven
#

Not loading on my side

#

Wait it is now

sour narwhal
shut raven
#

No I have the full case

sour narwhal
#

k

#

go to a computer

#

a DESKTOP COMPUTER

#

NOW

shut raven
shut raven
sour narwhal
#

bring your usb thumb drive with mint iso

shut raven
#

Only the portable one

sour narwhal
#

and ur enclosure with sata drive

#

can u take the internal drive out of that?

shut raven
#

Nah

#

Easier said than done 👍

sour narwhal
#

u can still install but

#

what the heck is Nyarch?

shut raven
#

Arch anime edition

sour narwhal
#

ok boot up the live usb stick

shut raven
#

Js don't ask I don't like revealing it in public 🙏

sour narwhal
#

then plug the external hdd once at desktop

shut raven
#

Alr

shut raven
sour narwhal
#

once ur at the live desktop

#

make sure to boot uefi mode

sour narwhal
#

u got something like that , using the boot menu key at power-on?

shut raven
#

Ok new problem that I think is causing me not to be able to download things on the hdd

sour narwhal
#

dw about that yet

#

u in the desktop?

shut raven
#

I can't even mount it 🙏

sour narwhal
#

nvm that!

#

open terminal

#

do efibootmgr

#

n show complete result

shut raven
sour narwhal
#

do cat /etc/issue n state result

shut raven
#

shut raven
#

Wait

#

sour narwhal
#

shut raven
#

Holy shit am I dumb 🥀

#

I'm gonna boot into ventoy now

sour narwhal
shut raven
sour narwhal
#

#

whatever gets u to a boot devices menu

#

when u get to ventoy screen look at bottom left corner

#

it should be saying UEFI

shut raven
#

I got jumpscared...

It was showing Linux mint logo then it suddenly jumped to terminal 😭

#

sour narwhal
#

#

shut raven
sour narwhal

shut raven
sour narwhal

#

i said maximize the terminal

shut raven
#

Sorry 🙏

sour narwhal
#

also u must plug in ur external drive now

shut raven
#

Alr

sour narwhal
#

shut raven
sour narwhal
#

shut raven
#

sour narwhal
#

sour narwhal

#

take the laptop to ur router then

#

and plug in ethernet

shut raven
#

It's downstairs in a very high place hidden within a locked cabinet with no table to support the laptop

sour narwhal
#

or just test a different way

#

open a browser

#

#

does it load?

shut raven
#

Nah

sour narwhal
#

shut raven
#
