#How can I install windows 10 as dual boot besides linux mint?
183 messages · Page 1 of 1 (latest)
do you have windows or mint installed right now
mint
forgot to add
I want to install 10 not 11 (11 eats the resources ;-;)
- shrink your main partition by at least 64gb
- create a live windows installation drive using ventoy
- copy the iso into the big partition it has
- boot into the live windows installer
- when it asks you where to install windows, select the unallocated are that you just created - be careful not to select your mint partition, it will overwrite your data
- let it sit there and install windows
- reboot
- boot into mint again
- run
sudo update-grub - from there on, just make sure to always boot into mint - there, in the grub menu, you can select to either boot into linux mint or windows 10
how can I shrink the partition?
install gparted, sudo apt install gparted
run it
om thanks
when I get home I'll apply all your steps
k let us know about any progress
you need to make a unallocated space in your hard drive using gparted
then just plug your windows 10 usb and select usb as boot device in bios/uefi and install windows 10.
on disk window select unallocated space.
rest you follow..
windows will palace windows bootmanager as first boot entry in bios so you need to change that to linux mint which named 'ubuntu'.
then most important part :
use: sudo nano /etc/default/grub
change timeout line from 0 to 5 or 10 what you like
and hidden to menu.
save these change using cntr+o and exit using ctrl+x
then run 'update-grub'
now you can select which os you want to boot during boot process
I installed it, what's next?
I freed some space
it's now 225 GB unused
resize the partition, the second one
how much space would you need for apps, files, etc. on windows?
I guess somewhere between 80-100 gb
I'll continue later on
resize the 2nd partition so it will be 380gb total (adjust if you need more or less space than that)
then go back to my first message
oh its because its still in use
then what to do now?
download ventoy from github - https://github.com/ventoy/Ventoy/releases
run the VentoyGUI.x86_64 file in the archive to set up a ventoy external drive
https://gparted.org/download.php
download gparted live from here, see the link that is purple for me (because i already downloaded it)
notice theres another purple link at the right handside, you can use it to verify the downloaded iso but its not necessary.
move (or copy) the downloaded gparted live iso into the first and bigger partition that is named Ventoy, on your external ventoy drive. make sure to NOT touch VTOYEFI
boot into that drive, where youll be greeted with the ventoy-styled grub menu that you can use to boot into any iso file in your external drive (including the windowas installation iso later on). boot into the gparted live iso
there youll be greeted by gparted again, but this time without the issue of your main drive being in use.
then do what i told you earlier to do
you do have an external drive, right?
I have flash drive
👍 use it
So I can't open ventoy despite running chmod +x
whats the error
it doesn't even open the app in the first place
try running it in the terminal
How?
ctrl+alt+t
cd into the directory where you extracted the ventoy archive
./VentoyGUI.x86_64
run chmod +x ./VentoyGUI.x86_64 && ./VentoyGUI.x86_64. as it is, just copy & paste
It worked!
but it's in russian accent ;-;
NVM, I just accidentally clicked on russin language
great
now select your flash drive
I selected it
navigate into Option -> Partition Style -> select GPT
I selected it
now press install
I pressed
ok
is it done?
yes
great
copy the gparted live iso into the first partition of it
I pasted it in the flash
ok now boot into it
oh, u mean restart then press f2?
just like how you booted into your mint installation media when you installed it
got this screen
what should I write?
try running normal
it said error failed to measure :(
can you run ls
Wait I think I pasted the file in wrong place (another flash that doesn't exist but for some reason it says it's here)
wdym
that... shouldnt be possible
in VTOYEFI?
are you back to mint
yes
when I wrote normal it said error failed to measure and it returned me to linux
oh thats good
can you run sudo xed /etc/default/grub
change GRUB_TIMEOUT=0 to GRUB_TIMEOUT=10
save the file
and run sudo update-grub
done
ok now reboot
select uefi firmware settings
oh it probably already entered mint didnt it
reboot again
ok press f9
press down arrow once and then enter
4 more times enter and youre there
enter 3 more times....
which option?
enter...
I clicked
and 1 last time... enter....
I got into this screen
yes this is gparted!
you've done it, good job
now resize your partition to leave enough free space for windows
what should I write in the new size?
I want the new disk to have 84 gb
move the slider until there's about 86000 mb free to the right of the partition (it should say at the bottom of the popup)
I did it
press the "Resize/Move" button
ok now press apply
confirm that you want to resize the partition
Ok I did it
great
now it should show ~390GiB for your mint partition and ~86GiB unallocated space, is that true?
nah its fine dw
?
It's still doing the operation
Ok
ok reboot back into mint
I rebooted
my dad needs some help so I might replay laye
late*
now download the windows installation iso and copy it to the same place you put the gparted live iso (can also download it directly to there)
should I delete gparted iso?
keep it there for future instances
ok
I'll continue later cuz Dad needs me atm
ok feel free to ping me
ok
boot menu F9. always f9 for choosing disks to boot from when u turn on the pc
youre late buddy
the usb file?
is the windows 10 installation iso in your flash drive
yes
yes boot it once again
I choose windows 10 is
yup
yes
alright
which input method should I chose?
whatever you want
your favorite language
I'll choose keyboard format arabic 101
where will the install location popup ?
wdym
yeah select the unallocated space
alright I installed windows!
now what's next?
good job!
reboot into mint and run sudo update-grub
ok but first I need to install firefox
that way youll be able to boot into windows from the grub menu
in this menu, youll now have a "boot windows 10" option or similar
AFTER you run sudo update-grub
okay
done
thank you for helping
I won't forget your help :)
can I unplug the flash now?
yes, btw you can keep ventoy and store other files in it simultaneously
atm I don't need it
