#Optimization & Best Practices to Reduce Computer Lag on Mint XFCE

Hi, I’d like to know what optimizations and best practices I can apply to make Mint XFCE run smoother. My computer is extremely slow (really slow… I’ll say it again), and I’d like to know how I could improve that. I’m probably doing some things I shouldn’t, or maybe I’m not doing enough?

depends on hardware

#

if it's too old, the limiting factor is the hardware itself

#

and linux, while great on older hardware (~2016), it may be worse for really really old stuff. I had a i3 350M that lagged just moving windows around

Probably disable some background processes? Like CUPS if you dont use printers

Disable animations wherever possible

And use lightweight themes

I've done that in my terminal

#

To disable CUPS

I've find this command

#

systemctl list-unit-files --state=enabled

#

I've disable few things (for modem manager, blueman, cups-browsed, cups, avahi-daemon, bluetooth)

don't mess with things like that

#

taking aways services you don't know anything about (and then forgetting about it too) is a perfect way to have a broken system.

fringe goblet
#

yeah and disabling a few services won't improve performance that much

scarlet saffron
#

ah ok

#

I don't use 4G/5G/Bluetooth/Printer so...

you should make a written note, in a special notebook you keep safe, just for computer notes : what you did

#

and the date of today

scarlet saffron
#

okay

#

Any other suggestion to improve performance maybe ??

slim lake
#

check htop

#

right after a fresh reboot

#

in its upper-right area see how many open threads/tasks it reports

#

also note its cpu usage average and memory used , in the top left area. and say it here. @scarlet saffron

scarlet saffron
#

Ok I will reboot and do that

scarlet saffron
#

The htop command wasnt installed so I installed it

#

(with the sudo command)

#

with firefox ON

slim lake
#

that's fine. the point is to check right at fresh boot

#

because of course firefox and other apps are going to skyrocket the thread and task count

scarlet saffron
#

okay so without firefox on my stats are ok ??

#

nothing to do to optimize my performance

slim lake
#

reboot and check htop like i said the first time

scarlet saffron
#

one more time ??

#

but the first screen was without firefox

#

just installed the htop thingy

slim lake
#

i didnt see first screen.

#

plus what i did see didnt look right

#

nvm now i see it. you put it to look tiny

scarlet saffron
#

yeah sry

#

so its not right???

#

if needed i can screenshare

slim lake
#

no it's fine

scarlet saffron
#

its fine ? on my screenshot or for the screenshare?

slim lake
scarlet saffron
#

ok cool

#

so nothing to improve 🙁

scarlet saffron
#

yeah

#

but i can't upgrade so im looking for good practices or optimization we never know ...

slim lake
#

what is the cpu and machine?

#

show result of inxi -CM

scarlet saffron
#

you will see a relic

#

GPU :

slim lake
#

Well i have no further suggestions

#

old nvidia is probably on extremely limited or dead support

if you want to try for fun, put Antix on a live USB and test it out a while

#

(dont install, test)

#

it runs pretty damn fast on weaker computers

i dont want to test too im scared to do shit things

#

idk what is it im a noob

slim lake
#

when u shut down, it goes back to linux mint

scarlet saffron
#

its okay i will stay like that

slim lake
#

ok
