#Using Both My NVME Sticks

Can you screenshot the disks app?
@small goblet
you must go into BIOS, and make sure all nvme or SATA ports are set to enabled.
They're seated properly. The lsblk output shows it
please show disks app
That's ok, click on the first disk, make a screenshot - then on the second one
@small goblet
Ok, on the second disk, do you have a + button?
I do not see a + button
If not, what options do you have under the cog button?
Format Partition (top option)
Create Partition Image
Restore Partition Image
Benchmark Partition
the three others are at the bottom
It's a new drive with nothing on it, yes?
Yes
Then format partition
Thank you.
Now it's saying the Contents - Not Mounted
do I just need to download to it?
I'm guessing you want to see it on boot?
Then click the cogs and choose mounting options
Uncheck default settings and screenshot
Perfect. Click Ok here and then press play (triangle) button
you should see it in the fle explorer
I do indeed
Thank you for the assistance. Every video I found was regarding Duel Boot Partitioning
You're welcome )
did u make the 2nd drive (which used to say unknown) into ext4?
for proper use on Linux
if so, I would HIGHLY recommend to use tune2fs on it. otherwise huge space is wasted
@small goblet
even your first drive that has the Linux OS on it.
tune it 1%
and the 4TB drive, tune it to 0%
Tune?
I'll show u what I mean now. how much wasted space
make sure both drives are mounted up
forgive me for being a bit daft but I don't understand what you mean
yes both are mounted and running
maximize a new terminal window
lsblk -o NAME,TYPE,MODEL,LABEL,SIZE,FSSIZE,FSTYPE,FSUSED,FSAVAIL,MOUNTPOINT
no just do this precisely
then show a windowed screenshot
n it will be clear
it's all one line
@small goblet
I'm still here
im waiting for result
I'm trying to find the neccessary information
dude do the command above n show
yes I'm trying to figure out the Type
just type it on one line interminal. press enter. n screenshot
im trying to offer tip, and u keep me waiting
@small goblet
do u know i just wrote it?
I appreciate the help but I'm gonna be a bit slow
what you wrote came back as unknown
copy/paste this
right click in terminal to paste
nvme1 is done completely wrong
it should look like nvme0n1 shows. with a single partition underneath it
i would redo it first off. use a PROPER partition table which maniak didnt tell u
the partition table should be GPT, since it's bigger than 2 TB
and gpt makes a hidden backup table for safety
install gparted and run it. it's an easy fix
Ok
then put BTRFS on it. it's way more space efficient
I have gparted running
if there's any data that's not saved, back it up off that first
cuz u'll need to redo this
well doesn't really matter 1 thing is on it and I can redownload
alright what am I to do with my 4tb?
well first off, turn off that automount thing u put for it in the DISKS app
since if u modify a partition, but leave the old settings, ti's a disaster
since DISKS app writes to a special booting file called fstab, which is responsible for all drives on the system
then do that for your 4 TB.. after u changed the automount thing bak to off/ user defaults n saved changes in Disks app
So unmount the 4TB in Disks
I don't understand your automount statement. Are you refering to Mount at system startup I have checked?
All I fiddled with is the Display Name and Icon Name everything else was preset
only for the 4 TB, everything im saying is purely for that
just uncheck mount at startup
then put the user defaults toggle back to on
then close. it may ask password to save changes
ok I turned off mount at startup and switched the defaults toggle then closed
good
now u can do as the pic above i sent
this initializes the drive properly and makes an actual partition table.
once done, right click the free space and do "new"
close that dialog n show the main window
close any apps that may be open that have anything to do with that drive
other than gparted ofc
Warning this will Erase all Data on the Entire Disk
u unmounted it first i take it
then make sure it's the right drive and do yes
then this.
then some critical things..
make as BTRFS type
for Label put some short thing, no spaces. use underscores if needing a form of a space
spaces will work, however it makes things treacherous like a true SOB
ur making more than 1 partition?
Yes
ok
hit add
perhaps the other "half" name it Backup - u can put system restore saves on it
also make it btrfs
i'll show u
wait.
do u want the first bit to be precisely 1.5 TiB?
@small goblet
I already Changed it but no it doesn't need to be lazer precise
I understand some space is taken
u'd delete partition 2.
resize partition 1
and put that many mebibytes into the new size field
1,573,000,000 MiB
This is fine
ok now, click all three in the file manager so they mount
then repeat last command u just showed
and reshow
as u can see, only 5.8 MiB used in overhead
that's EXTREMELY efficient given the size it had to format
yes I agree
not done yet
type sudo nemo in terminal
to open a rootmode file manager
then do ctrl-L for location bar.. and put in /media
go into media/erobros/ in the rootmode nemo.
follow me so far?
let's start with Games cuz that's the most important
right click it, > properties> permissions tab
make yourself the owner. and for the THIRD grouplet (all other entities) give that full create and delete files permissions in the "folder access' dropdown
2nd last dropdown
that's the third grouplet
full r/w priv's
2nd grouplet for group isn't that important but u may as well put urself in the group member, not root
Folder Access?
yes put to create/modify/delete
that gives full read n write priv's for Steam or whatever
this is basically it.. but in a diff file manager
sorry for being slow
but the second to last drop down that currently has Access Files
when u click on folder access, in the third grouplet.. what options drop down?
list files only
access files
hmph
create and delete files
u want all others to be able so read AND write
which maeans creat and delete
change group member to ur name
that's it after, then click on the close button
for the other 2 partitions, just put the owner to yourself and done.
u forgot to change the group member
though it's not THE most vile sin
I thought the group member was suppose to adopt my name?
or my eyes r fuckt sorry if that's the case
that's it done.
fix the other two for owner n group.. that's it. nothing else
then u can tune the ext4 one which linux runs on.
watch this for about 3 minutes at time cue
MIND BLOWING SUPER COOL LINUX COMMANDS
NOTE: YouTube won't allow the angled brackets that represent "greater than" and "less than" to be posted in the description text. I have indicated their use in the commends below but you'll have to replace them yourself. :)
CREATE A TEXT FILE WITHOUT USING AN EDITOR
cat (greater than) myfile.txt
-- Creat...
do NOT put it to 0 for the ext4. and do NOT use this command on btrfs
put to 1 as he explains for the linux root partition
and do not fk with ownership on the linux OS drive
oh lastly, for the games drive, u can put it to automount in DISKSs
the mountpoint should be edited to be /mnt/Games exactly as written (to keep steam happy) (then adjust steams's settings for storage to put its library there)
for Timeshift, in its settings, keep as Rsync, and direct it to your Backup partition on that drive u just made into btrfs
So for the two other files I did the same thing I did with Games
I made myself owner and create and destroy
read-only access is fine for all others
Technically CodeProjects is the most important to me?
depends on ur security paranoia and if u network ur computer on a lan
I'm nobody special yet
if u want no other users to see the files, then put the the third grouplet to 'no access' in folder access dropdown
only owner will have full r/w access
no dont do that
not for backups partition.
put all others full access for backups
i think timeshift runs as admin anyway, but just to be safe
I'll keep the others how they are for now
then all this and ur all set
then u can test with
lsblk -o NAME,TYPE,MODEL,LABEL,SIZE,FSSIZE,FSTYPE,FSUSED,FSAVAIL,MOUNTPOINT after the tuneup to ext4, and see the difference!!!
will do
wait
one last safety check
do more /etc/fstab now
make sure no old crap is there
just boot, root, swap, n ur 3 btrfs ones
@small goblet
Ok
else troublee next boot
the main problem is I still don't know how to read the information given
on top of not knowing how to obtain the information
ok so right now, just your things strictly needed for the operating system to boot and function are shown there
the first UUID is the linux root partition
the second UUID is for the EFI
the swapfile helps load the virtual memory swapfile
after u adjust ur games automount in DISKS app, it will add a fourth entry. remember to review what I wrote
if u maximize terminal, and repeat the comand , it will show without wrapping text
It is set to automount
well idk if u saved the changes. it should have asked for password
then it would have modified the fstab file
make sure to ALWAYS keep your bootable linux usb in a drawer SAFE and labelled with tape or proper plastic label.
in case of emergency, it's your best friend.
Got that
Well I checked disks and yes it's set to mount on system startup
then check fstab now in maximized terminal
or sudo xed /etc/fstab and maximize the text editor n read it good the very bottom lines should show new things
Both are showing the same thing this is the enlarged terminal screen
sudo xed /etc/fstab shows the same thing just requests my password
did u close gparted?
Yes
if it means anything I haven't done Tuneup to ext4
if doesnt show different, open Disks app and do it step by step. EXTREMELY fn good for the games thing
forget ext4 for now
show the disk option menu
show it GOOD.
for the mounting stuff
for the Games one
@small goblet
that's for games one?
Yes
turn off the toggle for user defaults and change mountpoint like i said
To etc/fstab?
nooo
Toggle for user defaults
User Session Defaults
Change mountpoint
it has field for mountpoint
Change to what?
click the ok button
and give it password.
then check fstab to see if it reflects the change
cat /etc/fstab
or more /etc/fstab
it should work this time.
u were forgetting to turn the toggle off before
Yes bottom line reflects the swap
not swap, games, i see it
Yes I do aplogize I was just checking to see if it mounted on startup
jsut reboot now n try it
i'd recommend to the backup one too
so timeshift can run on schedule and always find the drive
u only need weekly snapshots really
but i'd advise to manually create one soon anyway
dont forget to choose rsync n backup drive in it
Ok I'm restarting
I put my BackUps mount to mnt/BackUps
alright it's up and running
and it mounted at startup
k
now this. 2 minutes and ur all optimized
then compare to first time u ran this. Picture from hour ago
Sorry for the continues bugging but my nvme1n1p1 where the Linux fipe is stored has a vfat file stopping the change
this guy explains it all very very well. watch from timestamp to end. just for your information. https://youtu.be/AeR8Rk5LwWU?t=1072
In this video we look at the process of adding a new hard drive to an existing Linux System.
