#

i remounted my drives using the disk app changing where they were mounted and when i rebooted i encountered a bunch of errors like cant write lock file in /tmp my file system is read only and recovery mode doesnt work

#

i cant boot into my system i used to be able to with root and when i was in i deleted some steam games only the ones in the common folder and when i was able to boot into my main system it said the whole folder was gone

#

trying to the restore cmd with timeshift doesnt even work

#

😭

strange scroll
#

this is why u need to have a live usb

#

I hope you do.

#

@round lynx

#

note: messing with partitions with no experience is a bad idea

#

ESPECIALLY ones set to automatically mount each boot

round lynx
#

i do

#

yeah i didnt know im a new user

strange scroll
#

boot live

round lynx
#

wont i lose my stuff

strange scroll
#

no?

steady musk
#

You're safe in his custody

#

:>

strange scroll
#

the live disk is a rescue and test environment

round lynx
#

LOL

#

gimme a sec

#

ill boot in

#

wt do i do once im in

strange scroll
#

then launch the Disks app and take photos of each drive in it, and send here.

#

EXCLUDE the usb, cd/dvd, and loop

round lynx
#

like from the pic

#

ok

strange scroll
#

and show that first.

round lynx
#

ok terminal first

strange scroll
#

then do clear

#

and then lsblk -f

#

and send that also

#

then do clear

round lynx
strange scroll
#

ok

round lynx
#

wait how do i exclude the usb

strange scroll
#

go to disks app

#

click the nvme on the left.

#

(ct drive)

#

then click the EXT4 partition, and the play button and show

#

use alt-print key for window-only screenshot

round lynx
strange scroll
#

why is it so full?

#

that is not normal

round lynx
#

prob cuiz i put most of my files there since my external wouldnt mount on boot

#

😭

strange scroll
#

click the blue link u see there

#

then check all your files are thhere

#

make sure the boot folder is there

#

vmlinuz,

#

timeshift folder

round lynx
#

is vm supposed to just be in the main folder

strange scroll
#

i think it's in boot folder

round lynx
#

lemme check

strange scroll
#

along with initrd

round lynx
#

thx for helping btw

#

i see a bunch of files

#

named those

strange scroll
#

good

#

find the /etc folder and right click it

#

in top level

#

and choose "open as root"

round lynx
#

n all my stuffs there

#

now wt

strange scroll
#

u got /etc in root file manager open?

round lynx
#

ya

strange scroll
#

type fst

#

it should highlight a file called fstab

#

double-click it

#

then maximize the editor and send pic

round lynx
#

ok np

strange scroll
#

did u screw with this file?

round lynx
#

like in wt way

strange scroll
#

removing the linux root as a line

#

and the efi line

round lynx
#

i dont think i did

strange scroll
#

delete the bottom 3 lines

round lynx
#

now wt

strange scroll
#

show again

round lynx
strange scroll
#

go to beginning of second-last line and press enter

#

also go to beginning of line saying 'swapfile' and press enter

#

then show

round lynx
strange scroll
#

arrow down, press enter

#

arrow down again, press enter

#

show.

round lynx
strange scroll
#

press up arrow twice and put UUID=

round lynx
#

on the boot line?

strange scroll
#

then copy/paste the uuid in from disks app, of partition 2

#

on the empty line

#

up arrow three times, i meant

round lynx
#

on the hash under file system?

strange scroll
#

empty line

round lynx
#

so under the /was

strange scroll
#

yes

round lynx
#

got it

strange scroll
#

press TAB key once

#

then put:
/ ext4 noatime 0 1

round lynx
strange scroll
#

i only said press tab. not tab and enter

#

fix it

#

@steady musk heya

steady musk
#

yea?

strange scroll
#

have u got a uefi system running handy atm?

steady musk
#

yep

strange scroll
#

mind giving here the fstab line for your efi?

#

leaving out the UUID of course.

round lynx
#

like this?

steady musk
#

/boot/efi vfat defaults 0 2

#

this one?

strange scroll
#

thanks keiaa

steady musk
#

least i can do 🤝

strange scroll
#

under the other comment for efi

round lynx
#

under boot right

strange scroll
#

put UUID=

#

and paste the uuid from disks app for partition 1

round lynx
strange scroll
#

press tab once or twice, and put what keiaa just wrote

round lynx
strange scroll
#

put hash symbol to comment out the first comment

#

idk why u took it away

round lynx
#

didnt mean to

#

😭

#

is it supposed to go b4 the /was

strange scroll
#

show final

#

yes

round lynx
#

ok got it thx

strange scroll
#

that pic is the same

round lynx
#

woops

#

it must of pasted an old one

strange scroll
#

save the file

#

n close it, then in disks app, press stop button for p2

#

then gear icon: check filesystem

#

repeat for p1 to check filesytem

round lynx
#

it says for p1 its undamaged its checking the other one

#

it says both is undamaged

strange scroll
#

ok reboot now.

#

remove the usb when prompted

round lynx
#

do i try n log in

strange scroll
#

did it boot?

#

of course log in

round lynx
#

WTF

#

😭 it worked

#

ur a wizard

strange scroll
#

open terminal

#

sudo cp /etc/fstab /etc/fstab.bak

#

that'll make a backup copy

#

then plz dont screw with the mounts

#

make a timeshift snapshot rn too.

round lynx
#

thanks

#

😭

#

i just gotta figure out how to not mess with the mounts n get my external drive to automount

#

\like wt settings should i not touch

strange scroll
#

just use the disks app

round lynx
#

i did

strange scroll
#

wait

round lynx
#

ya?

strange scroll
#

#1297195485144154164 message

#

note that making changes with the DISKS app affects the fstab file.

#

so do be careful.

#

follow the guide.

round lynx
#

if i follow the guide ill be good tho right

strange scroll
#

idk why the heck your root and efi lines were completely found erased.

round lynx
#

idk either 😭

strange scroll
#

alright solved.

round lynx
#

thanks so much

strange scroll
#

if need to fix the issue again u can now troubleshoot from live mode

#

and u can open root file manager as u did, and rename fstab.bak to simply fstab

#

to restore it.

#

then if it works make another backup as i has shown u with the cp command once you safely return to the real system

round lynx
#

awesome thx

#

i appreciate the help

strange scroll
#
  • can also restore a good working timeshift snapshot from live mode
#

yw
