heya, just built a new pc. was trying bazzite and didnt like it much so tried to switch to linux mint but am now running into the issue of the system not being able to connect to the internet. it worked just fine with bazzite, so its likely a software and not hardware issue.

the only connection that shows up is "Loopback."

i have a seperate laptop i can use to get a new install of mint if necessary.

#

might not reply until morning btw, its late here and im probably going to stop trying after i post this for tonight. ill ping you when im back.

i looked up some past threads and the solution seemed to be to tether my phone to my computer via usb and install linux kernel 6.11, but i also read that that kernel will stop being supported soon?

stray sparrow
#

Could you show us the output of

inxi -SMNxxx

from the terminal?

flint heath
#

sure, apologies ill have to take a pic bc of no internet

stray sparrow
#

Ok, you have 2 network cards without drivers. How did you made the mint usb?

flint heath
#

was on bazzite, used i believe Popsicle or some other program to flash it onto a usb

stray sparrow
#

Alright, can you pop that usb in and show the contents?

flint heath
#

by show the contents do you mean like take a picture of the file structure or?

stray sparrow
#

Yeah in files \ nemo app

flint heath
stray sparrow
#

and isolinux folder please

flint heath
stray sparrow
#

Ok, with the usb plugged in, open driver manager and photo it after it's done loading

#

Oh, also show output of

mokutil --sb-state

from the terminal

flint heath
stray sparrow
#

Alright, then tether internet from your phone via usb

flint heath
#

kay, can i eject the usb stick?

stray sparrow
#

yes

#

After you get the internet (check by openng some site), go to update manager, click refresh and then install updates

flint heath
#

done + rebooted. still nothing so far

stray sparrow
#

ok, please show

inxi -SNxxx

again

#

And driver manager with internet tethered

flint heath
stray sparrow
#

Alright, next we'll try newer kernel. Go to update manager - view - lunux kernels and install 6.14.0-27 from there. Restart and send

inxi -SNxxx

again

flint heath
#

getting wifi now but not ethernet it seems?

stray sparrow
#

Yes, wifi should work now, can you check?

flint heath
#

yep, works fine

stray sparrow
#

Ok, hold on a bit

flint heath
#

no problem, i really appreciate you taking the time to do this

stray sparrow
#

Let's try this:

sudo apt install r8125-dkms

and show the results

flint heath
#

could probably hop on discord on my computer ATP but i cant be bothered right this sec

stray sparrow
#

ok, next show

dkms status

flint heath
#

(typod it at first thats what the text above it is)

stray sparrow
#

Ok, restart and show

inxi -SNxxx

again

flint heath
#

i also see wired connection, but it says cable unplugged.

stray sparrow
#

Reconnect the cable

flint heath
#

still nothing :/ the orange light is on and flickering though

stray sparrow
#

Ok, then show settings - network window

flint heath
stray sparrow
#

Add profile

flint heath
#

kay, now what?

stray sparrow
#

The default settings should be fine, you can turn off ipv4 or v6 if you know it's not used and then click add

flint heath
stray sparrow
#

seems like you created 2

flint heath
#

not sure how LOL

stray sparrow
#

Just remove the "profile 1" one

flint heath
#

ill just click forget on the second one, yeah

#

now it doesnt show any profiles? wtf

#

sec

#

yeah clicking "add" makes 2

#

and then when i forget it it erases both

stray sparrow
#

Yeah, that's ok, see the cog on the lower right? thats how it looks with 1 profile

flint heath
#

ohhh gotcha. okay ill just erase profile 1

#

alright got it now

stray sparrow
#

Do you use any special settings for your ethernet connection?

flint heath
#

i dont think so, like i said it worked out of the box when i was using bazzite

#

without having to configure anything

stray sparrow
#

Alright, back to research then

flint heath
#

thanks again, take your time

stray sparrow
#

show me

ip link

flint heath
stray sparrow
#

and

ethtool enp6s0

if it's not installed, run

sudo apt install ethtool

flint heath
stray sparrow
#

Ok, run this command

sudo dmesg -w | egrep -i 'r8125|enp6s0|link|phy'

then disconnect the cable for 5 secs, connect it back and photo the output

#

Press ctrl+c to cancel the command after the photo

#

It might be easier to copy paste the command if you login to discord on your desktop

flint heath
#

got it, will do

#

oh wait i couldve prntscrd doy

#

whatever

stray sparrow
#

ok, while it's like this, unplig the ethernet cable for 5 secs, then replug it - see if new lines appear

flint heath
#

doesnt seem like it

stray sparrow
#

Ok, let's try

sudo ip link set enp6s0 up
ethtool enp6s0

flint heath
stray sparrow
#

And

ethtool --show-eee enp6s0

flint heath
stray sparrow
#

Try

sudo ethtool -s enp6s0 autoneg off speed 100 duplex full

then after 5 secs

ethtool enp6s0

flint heath
stray sparrow
#

Next is

sudo modprobe -r r8125
sudo modprobe r8169
ethtool enp6s0

flint heath
stray sparrow
#

ah,

inxi -N
ip link

again please

flint heath
stray sparrow
#

Ok, then try

sudo modprobe -r r8169
sudo modprobe r8125 msi=0
inxi -N
up link
ethtool enp6s0

flint heath
#

ooh, a driver showed up

stray sparrow
#

But still no link

#

Do the LEDs light up on the internet cable?

flint heath
#

there's a blinking light in the back of the pc where the ethernet cable is plugged in, if thats what you mean.

#

maybe my pc is just too new to use linux atm, i might have to wait a few months for all my hardware to be supported

#

or atleast switch back to bazzite for now since everything with the exception of my pen tablet worked (currently im having issues with my second monitor not being on nor the usb ports on the top of my pc)

stray sparrow
#

The last suggesgion I have is to try kernel 6.11 instead of 6.14.

flint heath
#

sure, ill try that. if that doesnt work ill just look into a different os.
btw, do you take donations or anything via venmo/paypal? i appreciate you taking basically all morning to try and help me with this

stray sparrow
#

So it's kinda hard to recieve money here in Russia. You can try steam wallet card code, if you'd like

flint heath
#

ah sure, if thats what youd like 👍 whats your steam?

stray sparrow
#

Do you mean login or profile name?

flint heath
#

actually maybe i dont need that

#

yeah alright ill get one later when i go out and just dm you a pic of the card

#

thanks anyway

stray sparrow
#

Ok, at least I got wifi working
