i have a lot of errors when just trying to boot linux mint, i'm using just a Hard Drive, no USB.
I've used
ventoy
rufus
Etcher
Virtual box install (i gave up on that)
and when booting normally from grub, it's just frozen. In compatibility mode, it says things like
Squashfs failed to read block "X"
I also get things like
No medium found
I can provide more details if necessary, please help i'm excited to switch from windows to mint

send info regarding you device, which model is it?
Cinnamon
You talking about the drive or my PC
I'm using an external Toshiba 2TB to boot, no USB
Sorry if that's a mistake i'm new and lost my only 32gb stick
Lol
like what pc you got?
Windows 11 Rtx 3060 phoenix ryzen 5 5600 32gb ddr4 ram
my windows/current drive is 1tb ssd
do you have secure boot disabled?
Yeah
fast boot too?
good
let me get my phone on here for one picture of an error
ok
I use compatibility mode to see the terminal
It's just frozen when i use normal boot
It is actually universal
I tried installing Pop!_OS and i had the same issues
Try making a new ISO
Yeah
I reinstalled ISOs, different distros, used Rufus, Ventoy, Etcher multiple times
You are using a 2TB USB SSD?
It's an external hard drive
My friendd uses it for his Ubuntu pc
He has the same one no issues
you just plugged it in?
USB 3.0 which is what its supposed to be, booted through bios
i thought you said you lost your USB key drive
People told me as long as i did this partition thingy it will work
Like made it bootable via rufus, chatgpt did too
I can't even like try it
Not an install issue, i wanna install it but it just refuses to boot
what is the fat32 partition size?
I've changed it multiple times
On etcher let me check disk mgmt
Wait a minute
this is all i see with Etcher
so 5MB
"Sorry if that's a mistake i'm new and lost my only 32gb stick" you need to get another one
fr?
what you are trying to do won't work
like there's no way to make it work
you are trying to boot/install from the same drive?
yes
thats a no-go
dang
instead of a stick, can i use another drive
any kind of drive, not a plug in usb
just order or buy local another USB stick
You're sure for now i can't just use another drive?
where are you?
nyc
go over B&H Photo a buy one
sure i will, but are you SURE SURE it wont work with just another plain old drive
the problem is installing grub on the other drive
i can't just rufus it
like i did with this drive
sorry i genuinely don't know what im talking abt
its complicated
you think it's worth a try
just go buy another 32 gb usb flash drive
alr
trust, its a lot easier
BIOS fast boot is different from Windows Fast startup. ensure the latter is off, especially.
bad connection.
okay, i have to take a shower, you can take over @last jungle
bad connection? like the drive is slow?
that's not the only error though
that's what squashfs means. it's errors with the compressed "live" filesystem
I get things like
No medium found
Some input/output thing
reading from it
let me see if i can find pictures
well can u boot the live system ever to a desktop?
?
boot mint ISO to desktop
https://linuxmint-installation-guide.readthedocs.io/en/latest/ read all about Live boot, and the rest.
Yeah, the thing is is that i'm trying to do it on a single drive i know it sounds stupid, lmao but chatgpt says i could so i trusted it 🤷♂️
u cant do that shit
i learned lmao
either use an external drive, whatever kind, to boot live, and then install or co-install ONTO AN INTERNAL DRIVE
gulp
or LAN-Boot if u have 2 PCs and a router.
Mint can run decently in about 70 GB. raw minimum is like 11 GB with zero room to grow.
Woah
btw, to reset a brutally "etchered" drive... see #1295816480256163892 message
i just used diskpart to clean and made a new primary partition
so it's basically reset ?? ig
diskpart is one of the options shown
ik
I'd just ventoy it
really? you don't think rufus would be easier
meh
ventoy gives a nice way to verify the image before booting to ensure it's dead-on accurate
Verify ISO'S: #1367031929999986698 message
yeah, i alr did
follow the link above too.. it has some important points.
and look at the verify link to see how ventoy does it ON THE ACTUAL BOOTABLE MEDIUM
in ur case an external hdd
this makes some key points. pay attention to step 4b, and all of 6
good luck.. if still squashfs load errors, tighten the usb plug or use better cable/ port
okay!
oh and the win fast startup thing
i have 100s of usb 3.0 in my house... never had a use for them until now
important to disable
yeah , i did
as well as bitlocker if gonna dual boot
in control panel , not BIOS right?
i did it in bios
i said they're different
no i mean i did it beforehand
see #1193345280733622272 message .... exactly as lenovo link shows
done
i'm still getting SquashFS errors, i know it's normal i didnt switch the microusb
I just switched it but, do you think that it's my usb hub that is the problem?
new error! i’m… so excited!
that failure can be ignored
fr? it doesn't do anything after that
check the bottom there's another
"cat: /sys/block/ventoy/removable: No such file or directory
please remove the installation medium, then press ENTER
right
it didn't do anything after that though
after you press enter it reboots
oh bru
oops
also, i booted that through grub2, if i used it normall with ventoy it gets stuck before the thing on the screenshot, a blank terminal
i waited like a minute, nothing
i'll try booting it again
so do i unplug the live?/my drive
yes
i am trying to catch up on what happened when i was in the shower
my bad
its okay
i'll give you a rundown
I'm using my external drive as a live usb, with the remaining space on my main drive as the main thingy ( dualbooting)
Everything after i said "done" is new lol
so how did you install ventoy on the install from drive?
i selected the drive, GPT, safety boot option or whatever cus why not
after installing, i dragged my ISO (single file) into the root of it.
can you call me voice?
k'
my mom gonna call me disrespectful if i talk otp while ppl over ykwim
do i join #live-support
yeah we can do that
a;r
u want me to screenshare?
windows 11 desktop
the main disk? for the desktop is my windows 11 install
yes
yeah idk how he did it
ssd
mhm
external hard drive - i'm using it as a live usb replacement, stunner told me i could ( i think )
Yeah
2tb - a little to large for what i'm doing ig
sure
So i put it in the partition i create
this is what i see rn
and in disk management this is what i see - yeah lol
So i partition the Ventoy drive down?
He said the bare minimum is 11gb and can run decently on 70gb
Yeah
Yes
I know - i'm kind of comfortable as i've had 22gb before i uninstalled Warzone and my Zelda roms
Yes
I'm just tryna install it rn i'll free up more space later
Secure boot is off
I've had it off for years - fast boot is off in bios and control panel windows aswell
i think i had this ahsi thing but i made sure that was correct
hm?? never seen that before
Asus
Yeah i know
True
Yes
Yes 👍
I know
Shrink it?
Yeah yeah i know, it would like "overwrite" a manually created partition
I see
I was thinking maybe an alternative to ventoy would work
I know - it's just kind of far i checked my stores on my way home today
My local walgreens is the only place that would have it 😂
I'll see if i can pick one up
Yeah i don't think thats based on the size
if a microSD works i could definitely try that 😂 i'm assuming ventoy doesn't support it - maybe rufus
I have a USB hub
yeah i know they're slow
let me go grab one 🤣
really ? i've been using the USB hub for the external drive
Maybe that's the issue?
I just thought of that 😭 i'll brb let me try it, i just usedd it because it's tighter wont slip out
i'm gonna restart my pc
I guess we know the problem now, just gotta dualboot now
Hopefully i don’t delete windows
do the install side by side
I did
The scary part is that i didn’t get to chose how much space windows vs linux got
And i did not back anything ip
up*
It’s super stretched - I think it’s becuase i have no drivers
what is the video card?
boot into Linux Mint, System Settings, Driver manager near the bottom
u can shrink the WINDOWS drive by 70 GB to make space for the perma install of linux on it , not the ventoy drive
as long as u booted uefi style (presuming Windows is UEFI-run) then the mint installer ought to give you the "Install alongside Windows" option. if it didn't, something's not right.
I’ll do this after my install NVidia RTX 3060
i need to sign out for the evening
Cya gn
yeah i got the option it’s just the tutorial i watched to double check had a space to change the space available for each - mine doesn’t but ig its alr
it was from 7mo ago
if u had premade space, then it wouldnt ask
huh
as in, if you had preshrunk a part of your Windows volume, by say 40 to 70 GB, then it will just find that and install alongside on that.
you can view your disk layout now in linux mint using the Disks app
Huh
Almost done the install alongside- so excited
Thank you all very much
Until i get drivers, should i just boot compatibility mode
fml bro
what's this?
After the install when i try to boot
why's everything about this pc cursed?
It can be any option - grub1,grub2, normal mode, compatibility
ik
show how u are booting. every single step. write it
Restart from windows > F2 into bios > boot into my live thingy > Takes me to ventoy > I can click either grub1 or grub2 to get into the grub menu > i press normal mode it doesnt work > I try compatibility it doesnt work for both grub1 and grub2
did u do this exactly from ventoy at the early stage of booting live media?
why r u booting ventoy if u installed?
ur supposed to boot the internal drive/final install
did u read this install guide thoroughly, beginning to end?
that can be viewed in windows Disk management. if zero mention of bitlocker there, then all good
I did search regarding the invalid magic number thing, seems to be related to corrupted install USB
Huh
I’m doing a sha256 checksum rn
So what would i do if thats the case
Do i have to reinstall
Or just the live
here they mention formatting the USB to FAT32 first before using ventoy, or something with a fake USB https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?t=414123
Well, good news and bad news. Good news is I am no longer in constant frustration for not knowing the problem (at least for now :?). Bad news is the problem is the USB drive (I used CheckFlash to test it). It was a deception after all :( . It's actually a 4GB USB drive and not an 8GB drive as advertised. Now I doubt it's an issue with storage but I think it's an issue with something inside of it that Ventoy is unable to do a thing about (since the old 16GB USB drive also didn't work). I am now going to try to find another actual legit USB drive and will try Ventoy again.
Almost forgot to update but today, I finally got my new USB. It's a SanDisk 32GB which I made sure it's real because I bought it from the official store (although they sold it on a 3rd party website but it's a trustworthy one) and did a check on it to see the whole USB functioning. I booted up Ventoy and install to the USB. To my surprise, it actually works and I was able to put the ISO on it. I installed it and everything went well after that.
So to summarize this whole issue, the problem was I had fake USB drives that refuse to work and all I had to do was to buy a new one. Thank you for everyone's help for reminding me about the USB devices. :D
not sure if it is exactly your problem, but that's what the person did
maybe try to use the 'CheckFlash' tool they mention to confirm
So i don't have to fully reinstall linux on my main SSD?
So i just format to fat32 and ventoy it?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s4EX5DMEZH0
i'll follow this ig
How to Format USB Drive Larger Than 32GB to FAT32

So you want to covert a NTFS 64GB USB flash drive to FAT32. Its pretty easy to do with this bit of software below.

no, since they mention the install usb, perhaps you have to reinstall
also regarding encryption was it disabled?
??? i don't have bitlocker
ok, right
how do i make sure it's in fat32
i don't see it anywhere
the 32mb is fat32
the other part is unformatted
?
u have to compare to mint site
remember, ventoy is ONLY to create a bootable demo/rescue/installation environment
ah
ccf482436df954c0ad6d41123a49fde79352ca71f7a684a97d5e0a0c39d7f39f
no different than ordering a Windows 7 DVD in the mail
mine is different ?
hence the problem
bad download or error in copy
o
or both >: )
nah check the checksum urself
so
reinstall the ISO from the site
put it in my live drive ventoy thing
voila
why i said do step 6 damn accurate. dont rush the copy
i understand it now
but then if the cable to external drive is the slightest bit bad, could still result in a couple bad ones and zeros
u can verify the ISO u first got in Windows using powershell. if it's good, just recopy
using a bad cable when i copied it
yeah i think i did that the other day when trying to fix
dont evne look at that
alr
this has some merit with dubious and scandalous USB flash drives. on a spinning external drive, could be less an issue to have "fake storage" amounts
i deadssa think microsoft stopped me from installing other browsers
i can't install tor, firefox or chrome after a windows update , like no browser but EDGE works
hmmph
no fix works lmao
is it windows S-mode?
no idea
windows 11 home
ok
can't wait to free myself from the windows 11 chains and switch to linux
if it works well on ur device, sure
lmao
so recopy a known-good ISO to ventoy. give it half minute to rest ater done. u can even verify what's ON the ventoy partition (the ISO) using powershell
okay
do not unsafely eject. dont even eject the external drive at all for that matter
it doesn't have the eject button as it is an external hard drive
well dont
alr
the tray icon exists for a reason
or right click in either windows or linux file manager, on any external storage device, and choose 'safely remove' or 'unmount' or 'eject' to do things right
hm
same error 🤦♂️
ok did the live environment load without any problems whatsoever?
then what did u do?
boot the live environment now please, and tag me when you're there
yes the ISO
alright
When it opens in mint
Before you install
alright
when you're there, open a terminal, and do inxi -SGxxx && efibootmgr and show a landscape well-framed photograph of the result
ok, next open the DISKS app, select the drive which is internal to the pc. then show pic.
of the full window, not leaving bits out
@kindred iron
so as u can see there, not a DAMN thing was installed regarding linux.
well it's not there stare at it.
Ik
?
pop back into Windows.
then fire up Disk Management in it
wait
show the 2 TB Toshiba in disks plz
@kindred iron
ok np.. maximize disk management, and show
what disk u wanna see
rn?
lmao
if u find a fix i’ll try later
what's "lna" ?
rn mispell
yes shrink the windows big NTFS partition using Disk Management.. by around 65 to 70 GB if u have enough free
alr
If Windows Disk Management refuses to shrink by how much space you tell it, which is actually available, then do this:
Shrink Windows drive safely with Aomei: #1366753008087728148 message
i got 3 portable charges lined up rn finna save my phone
if u have steps after thats be great because im assuming ur gonna be asleep by the time my power is back
it is a 100% free program, dont fall for ads
alr
well anyway , read over what that last link shows.
once you've shrunken the volume fr, (and check it to be sure in Disk mgmt) then boot live, pick 'install alongside' and it will actually install.
and you'll be able to verify what it did before u even leave the live environment using the DISKS app.
also make sure to not mess with shrink or install if unreliable power is an issue. that's a sure way to FK the drive for good.
Nah, it just goes out sometimes lmao - first my lights go out then my pc and stuff - ejected the drive and turned ut off after
so what is the problem?
Someone trying to do an install outside of the standard process.
I didn't know you were around
wat
the same ones u told me abt
i js woke up imma shrink the drive now
so it's as simple as going to this main partition,
shrinking it by 60-70gb?
or more if you want
and leave the rest unallocated?
right
is it like risky to shrink
a tiny bit. ensure steady power and battery
yeah ofc now maybe not a couple hrs ago
back up any critical data
btw
.
ahh i see
do yes
alr and restart?
ofc
carry on
alr ill js od aomei
since i have like 170gb space left can i do 70 with it being safe
oh sure
what was chkdsk even for
So, do i select "split" or "resize partition"
nvm i checked the thread
this good?
@last jungle wsp
hi
js wondering if my settings were correct
go more
alr
u see the right box counter
how much more
rn it's approx 60 GB
72
why that specific number
cuz 2 gigs goes to swapfile
yep u may want to use the enhanced data protec mode
that and the apply button
alr
yes it will restart in a safe mode.
bru 27 minutes
prob takes 20 minutes
check parts before exec?
yes tho u did earlier
bru wtf
did u get standard free one/
this window may be an ad
nah i x out of it nd click proceed it still does it
or click x and untick the alignment thing
where is the alignment thing
like in the move and resize partition window?
ohh it was to optimize performance of ssd
yes
it's fine to do it withotu?
yep
i guess shift the partition size
to?
what will that do
might refresh the issue
can i just do 71gb
fine
u probably got the wrong version
alr
show the file u got?
continue
good
continue
contin
it speeds up dw
i think by 15% it goes way up
how is it now?
19% rn
s-ok leave it.
idk it may have had data scattered everywhere
it finished
perfect 🤩
yep
yep
and follow as shown here #1366753008087728148 message
while it's installing, check out #1308145211255292004 message
fml
the thing happened.. again
@last jungle mb for ping
u chose the 'alongside' option?
ok.. this time we'll get it.
god willing
i have no idea why it didn't auto-find the space
wdym
start live again, and choose the "something else" option
it goes something like this, what's shown in red
numbers of partitions and sizing will be different
alr
your case efi partition will be nvme0n1p1
click + on the free space and make as shown in diagram
i select the right region
linux uses UTC interpretation of ur BIOS clock
so when u go back to Windows, it assumes bios is on local
u can do a fix for that tho dw
do it now n i'll supervise rq
alr
hollon i might be a dumbssa but how do i like reboot from the live
yk what i mean
just re-ventoy it?
first thing u do at this step is the bottom box shown with red text
no i mean
cs when i boot it imma get that same magic word error
no? just press the boot menu key for ur pc
yea ik
oh ok recopy
oh yeaaa
i think what's happening is it tried to write to the damn external drive, the installer
and that screws up the ISO
so i gotta use something-else to make sure it points to the main drive
yep
k rebooting rn
ensure u pick 'normal mode' in the ventoy 2nd screen
i did
wait
i never do i always pick compatibility
Cus i have nvidia / no drivers
i dont think it works/ it froze before
i was also using normal nvme no 1p1 for bootloader install
here’s what. i have, didn’t change anything in the device section kinda confused
scroll the chart
to nvme stuff
yh theres a few
find that free space (72000 MB)
i see 77310 mb
then hit the +.. make all as shown here (not sda, obviously)
/dev/nvme0n1p4 776 mb used
right under nvme.. p2 right?
ntfs
i mean nothing used was looking at the wrong thing
i said the wrong name lemme list details again
free space 77310 mb under /dev/nvme0n1p3 formatted ntfs 945998 mb
ill just send a pic
no.. just click the free space..
now what
make a partition
that's what im showing u
mb
copy my pic above
this one ri
you're manually creating an ext4 filesystem partition in the unalloc'd space. / means the root of the whole filesystem for linux.
hit ok
good?
it should now show a format tickmark in the main chart
ok hit install now
mhm it wont
Starting
Dice rolling🎲
Yo there’s another boot option @last jungle THIS HAS TO BE GOOD
okay do i boot it
yes definitely
oh it detects both two of my monitors
wha'ts the GPU(s) brands?
then probably need nvidia driver
and don't pick DIFFERING refresh rates
it's not support on X.org
differing between the two monitors?
the X display server, as shown in your inxi -G report has been well-matured and used for decades, but it doesn't handle that aspect
alr
Yeah man everything works. Installed wine and discord, seamlessly can boot into windows
I don’t like how slow moving windows can be though
Like moving them around
check ur driver for gpu
if inxi reports it's on nouveau, use Driver Manager to select a diff one
clock thing if needed: #1341493443767173120 message
