#Selecting I3 As Desktop Brings Me To Cinnamon

Hi folks, I'm playing around with a window tiling manager as I'm really interested in going keyboardless.

Coming across i3, and installing it via sudo apt install i3, I'm well aware that I need to reboot, and when loging in, select i3 as my desktop.

However, I noticed that if I were to log out, and use Cinnamon again, using i3 will bring me back into Cinaamon.

This is the output of running cat /usr/share/xsessions/i3.desktop:

[Desktop Entry]
Name=i3
Comment=improved dynamic tiling window manager
Exec=i3
TryExec=i3
Type=Application
X-LightDM-DesktopName=i3
DesktopNames=i3
Keywords=tiling;wm;windowmanager;window;manager;

I am not sure it will do what I want it to do, but try. I know this work with the wayland replacement - sway

Interesting giving that a shot right now

#

Ok so that took me to a CLI

#

Logged in, but after logging in I can't really go back to Cinnamon if I want to

#

Running i3 gives me some error saying that there is no display available

hence trying to start i3 fails and it falls back to cinnamon

#

you can enter cinnamon by pressing (iirc) ctrl alt f1

The wiki table of contents didn't have a specified startup guide, and it works on a fresh boot

#

I can exit, and re-enter i3, but upon starting Cinnamon once, it seems to just not work at that point, making me think this is something else causing the issue

Specifically wayland?

yes

Is Wayland supposed to look any different

#

I'm not seeing any changes, this may be just my system running Cinnamon again

and you can't enter regular cinnamon?

No, seems like it's just always enterring regular Cinnamon regardless of what I choose

Yeah there sounds like there's some miscommunication going on. I'm going to try to retype the situation

#

On fresh boot: Starting i3 works.

Exiting i3, and re-entering i3 still works.

Logging out of i3, and I start Cinnamon default, everything loads correctly

Supposing I want to log out of Cinnamon, and re-enter i3, (i3 is selected), I'm back onto Cinnamon

No worries all good

Ok, turns out that if I were to run

sudo systemctl reboot display-manager

I can have i3 running and not have it "default" back to Cinnamon. Still not an ideal workaround as I hoped it'd be more seamless
