#I cant update Kernel - polkit permission issue
249 messages · Page 1 of 1 (latest)
Can you get to a grub menu?
If you had timeshift enabled you can fix that by booting to the installer and then open timeshift and revert your changes and reboot | Then sudo apt autoremove and go to the software manager and get the latest kernel from there, then reboot and sudo apt autoremove again.
i dont know what that means.. im very very new. i only got it to work for 30 min before this
i tried pressing left shift and stuff but nothing seams to work
I think you need to hold left shift
i just tried to use linu /vmlinuz root=/dev/sd4 and stuff like it
i can re try with holding
it did not work
It's a program that works like system restore. You might have to reinstall. After a fresh install, type the following.
sudo apt update; sudo apt upgrade -y; flatpak upgrade
then reboot the computer, sign in, open timeshift, and let it make a time stamp
Do you still have your mint usb?
You can boot into it and try boot repair
using f12 to boot from usb
"selected boot device failed. press and key to reboot the system"
no buttons are working to reboot it
Try it with legacy bios?
how do i do that
Could you photo your boot menu?
i am currently in my bios
I'd like to see the boot menu and hat you're choosing
BTW, what was the last thing you did before getting to this situation?
I don't really see any usb devices here
this, was with "A Lusty Argonian Maid" trying to update my kernel so it would stop crashing on a normal boot. i have to go into advanced and select the older versin
How did you get to grub menu that time to load older kernel?
before it had options like
mint
Mint advances
windows
And now it goes here?
yeap
Hold on a bit. Meanwhile, try to boot into mint usb
Might as well choose the UEFI version
oops, im booting mint via usb
That's fine, at least it's moving along
okay im in the usb mint
Ok, try boot repair first
So click on install and setup the partition table the way you like it. After you try that boot repair. Unless of course boot repair works.
is there a command?
Click the menu and type boot repair
wants me to updates the software
Do you have the internet connection?
yes
then click yes
okay, its gonna take a couple min
ok
I don't remember there being that many options; Are you in the advanced options?
yes
go back please
in the other options ist just about or quit
There isn't a button that just says repair?
Ok, open disks app and photo
Loop device is new
really appreciate the help by the way. this is nearing the end of my second day trying to get this to work
Loop device is for live environment.
Hold on please, I'd like to fix the problem
What does it say if you type
sudo update-grub
in the terminal?
it won't have much of an effect on live session
this mean you blew your kernel(s) away
how did i manage that?
its not supported on this system
He ran the USB in legacy mode
yeah cuz u booted in legacy.. was your Windows legacy-run? or u dont care about windows?
@pallid lichen
what version of Windows was it?
Windows boot manager is in UEFI from a previous screenshot
It said there that boot mode was uefi
11 i thnk
care about what?
so reboot the usb up as UEFI mode
yeah, set up in bios
why are you so agressive man... im just trying to get this working.
i need dual boot for linix and windows
to do it right, and to guarantee your USB shows in BIOS as a bootable device, remake it on a diff pc using GPT partitioning mode
additionally, I'd recommend ventoy.. this way u can make it in GPT, slap a fresh Mint ISO on it, AND supergrub2 IMG
the latter is good to have for emergency booting broken bootloaders
ok try that highlighted option
Poor guy has been here for almost three hours
Sadly longer, i started today at 10, its now 6
u can tell it's live boot cuz it mentions OEM install
Just to be sure, after you boot, go to the terminal and type
[ -d /sys/firmware/efi ] && echo UEFI || echo BIOS
Live boot means the demonstration/installer
its taking a long time to boot
do what Maniak said after reaching live desktop
on a black screen
I gotta take off for a few; If you get it working, make sure you get that timeshift enabled.
or simply efibootmgr
to be sure it's in EFI mode
if efibootmgr results in a "boot current" line, not the one u saw last time of 'not supported' then you're good to go
I still have a feeling Boot Repair won't find a kernel, thus no 'recommended repair' button will appear
so you'll need to reinstall Linux (alongside Windows option)
You should still try boot repair first though
okay, via same icon at top left?
Menu, then type boot repair
no for the install. like is it the same one i used in the first place
Yes
just for fun, do sudo os-prober in terminal
@thick hill I thought he just needed to reinstall grub, no?
I mean I suppose you could chroot n all that.. and install a fresh kernel, etc etc.. I just think since this is a very new (failed) install, reinstalling linux would be quickest and effective
this marks the 12th (i think? i lost count mostly tbh) time i shall install mint!
next time do timeshift.
it's presented to you right in the first-boot of install's WELCOME screen
Alright.... how would he replace "broken" mint with a fresh one?
This is a new option to me
like chroot, open update manager, kernels etc.. all that.. then update-grub or boot repair
this is how it always should've been..
since ur booted EFI now
no I meant install new mint over the broken one
so i can just click install now and it wont remove windows?
well they can delete it using the DISKS app (the old Mint ext4 partition)
hang on Venti
hanging
Could you go back 1 step and show us the options?
Before i went “somthing else”
yes
something isnt right
rip
u see the previous pic u posted?
indeed
the windows partition should be 388 GB
yeap, thats why i am worried about the difference
if u added those two numbers, it'd prob equal 388
I think he can go with "something else" option, mark partition 4 as root and format it, and mark partition 2 as /boot/efi
so what i reco u do, is delete the OLD ext4 partion (just that) from disks app
thats what i have been doing
sda4 in this case.. delete it
just checked.. they do
now just select install alongside.
u may have to back out of the installer
all the way to beginning,
so that it notices the change u made
either quit, or hit "back" a few times
then do 'install alongside" it'll auto-detect the space u just made. and give a confirmation window
going back didnt work so i am going through again
its just saying "install now" now
click install now, then read the confirm.
instead of showing me the sizes
okay
Its going through the installation
whats going to be the next step?
it confirmed it'd make a "partition 4" on sda right?
which would thusly replace the sda4 u deleted in DISKS
yes
good, just set up ur account , DDO NOT ENCRYPT SQUAT and let it finish
this model is an SSD, so it should finish in about 6 minutes
pretty sure its only sata tho. not nvme
yep
if it was nvme, the DISKS app would say that in the titlebar as part of its dev name
oh nice
#1193345280733622272 message < make sure this is done, exactly as per lenovo link shows once back in Windows.
if mint works out for me i might just upgrade the storage
im not sure i need to do this? when i had it before after every restart it took me to grub to select win or mint
its just that mint wouldnt work and i had to go through advanced mint
well it'll cause all kinds of problems if u leave it on
test both.. default on list starts mint after 10 (or 5) sec
its done now, just run restart and see what happens?
also make sure u are doing personal file backups of very important files onto an external drive, or cloud storage
this is separate from Timeshift, which backs up a known-working system state for linux
It has file back-up also, but I wouldn't recommend it
Which one should i boot to?
Mint
true but ppl get messed up with that sometimes if ppl timeshift old personal files overtop of newer ones
okay its actually booting to mint now
once you're in Mint, hit ctrl-alt-t then do inxi -SGxxx and show
G will show ur graphics n whether or not a proper driver is already there or further work is needed
sudo apt update; sudo apt upgrade -y; flatpak upgrade
all good
okay, and now do i need to update my kernal?
it's a 14 inch screen, so u may want to turn ur resolution down to 1600 x900 or 1366 x 768 to make things easier to see/read
no DO NOT TOUCH KERNEL
I would get all the other updates and reboot first before you go get 6.11.x
why FUCK with kernel if it works. test this way for a full day or two
sounds good to meeeeee. dont wanna go through that again
and do timeshift before screwing with anything
i dunno, was told to
and i do that byyyyy....
look in Welcome screen
In my case, it encodes media a wee bit faster
the ONLY thing i suggest alteriing is the frequency of how often it takes snapshots
just put ONLY to 'weekly' and retain 2
rsync and onto the ext4 partition for saves
(can also be put onto an ext4 other drive )
okay done
I have mine set to daily and save only five days at a time; I'm constantly messing around with stuff though.
then once u run the setup, hit "Create" button
running
then it makes a manually triggered 'timeshift snapshot' which u can even tailor a comment on after it's done
and once this is done i can go play and not worry about ti breaking?
and then next time i boot windows i disable fast boot
remember to turn fast start off in Windows as i linked
boot to windows after timeshift is complete.
okay
will do!
thank you both so very much, i hope it stays stable now. and maybe in a weeks time i will tackle the no internet issue on my main pc 😅
p.s how do i mark as solved
see #1295728709306683482 for tips n fancifying
r-click the post title on eft, and edit tags and add 'solved'
I imagine the three dots at the top of the screen, upper right hand
remember if your linux machine ever becomes totally unbootable (hopefully never now) , you can boot the live usb to its desktop to restore a Timeshift snapshot
