the system usually freezes when the memory is full, do you usually have any background apps while playing?
steam brave guilded and plank
it happened again
just scrolling roblox games
@lethal pelican im sorry for the ping but i need help
well, if you have all of those running at the same time then it probably is a memory issue, because you only have about 6GB of ram
I dont think it has anything to do with underclocking, i also have 8GB of ram and neofetch shows 7253MiB
try checking your ram size in system monitor
should show 7.6GB or something similar
it doesnt matter, what is the overall size of your memory as shown my system monitor?
6 gb
well then you only have 6GB, so its pretty normal to run out of memory. although a simple idea is to restart brave every now and then because it just keeps taking up more memory as long as its running
like for example, I launched brave an hour ago and have only 7 tabs open and it is consuming 3.6 GB alone
no you are right, you have 6GB of memory and 2GB of swap
is your disk HDD or SSD?
ssd
well, using swap causes your SSD to die faster but offers you more virtual ram. so if you are fine with it you can increase the swap to 4GB or something
uuh wdym by die
well, any component has a lifetime after which it fails. for example if an SSD fails after 10 years of normal usage. you may lose your data
mh
an SSD has a certain amount of read/write cycles before it dies, so for example an SSD may have 10TB of read/write cycles which means that you can download and delete data worth of 10TB before the SSD starts to degrade and die. so obviously by using swap you are constantly writing and reading data from the SSD causing it to consume read/write cycles
well it depends on how much you use your computer but if you keep it at 2GB then damage is minimal
on average, you may decrease the lifespan of your SSD by 2% or something every year
given the games you play, 16 GB will be enough for you
ok
btw, the reason this didnt happen in windows is because windows has much better memory management. when the memory gets full in windows apps start lagging and sometimes freeze
but in linux the entire system freezes when the ram is full for some reason
ye i have noticed that
well button restarts are a normal day to day thing for me...
finally, you can take a look at this, they mention memory flushing and swap, so you may find a solution there
https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?t=277472
ok
yes i suffered alot when i had 4GB of ram lol
btw how do i change swap? like for noobs cuz im kinda new to linux
it didint work :Sob:
it uses 3 gb on just brave, guilded plank and steam of swap memory
mint is kinda slow
so the system still freezes?
Well I don't suggest doing so if you want to use Linux as a straightforward OS like windows. Because if you go to a more minimal Linux distro you will have to configure more things yourself
you can try bazzite if you are feeling adventurous and you play games all the time, it's a new distro that is designed for gaming
mh i will see some videos
Sounds good, keep the post active so that someone else could share better ideas if they find this post
ok
Could you please post the result of
inxi -Fxxxz
from the terminal?
And
inxi -m
please
Memory:
System RAM: total: 8 GiB available: 5.61 GiB used: 3.51 GiB (62.6%)
Array-1: capacity: 8 GiB slots: 2 modules: 2 EC: None
Device-1: Channel-A DIMM 0 type: LPDDR5 size: 4 GiB speed: 5500 MT/s
Device-2: Channel-B DIMM 0 type: LPDDR5 size: 4 GiB speed: 5500 MT/s
So you have 8 gb of ram, but 6 available because your integrated gpu reserves about 2 gb as it's own. That's probably can be changed in bios
For notebooks it's often F2
mh ok do u know maybe the idea pad slim 3?
reboot --firmware-setup
from the terminal might work too
Dedicated gpus have their own ram (vram), integrated ones usually borrow portion of system ram
ok but if i dont give ram to the gpu, will games work?
Will depend on the game, but no harm in testing, if there's a setting for that in bios
mainly people playground, roblox and minecraft, sometimes osu and wobbly life
I see you already increased swap to 4 gb, if it still locks up you can try to increase it to 8
i dont wanna ruin my ssd
Modern SSDs aren't that fragile
Well for the meantime, try to decrease the apps you are running while gaming to save some memory. And tell us how does your laptop perform when you do get the new ram :)
Fairly rare, why?
What's osu lazer?
If you got it from official site, it should be fine
yes but idk why it lags after i downloaded it
tbh im about to download bazzite as noobs master suggested it to me,
Yes but do a quick research first because I did not try it myself
ye i am doing it
Could you screenshot system monitor while osu is running?
Does it lag in the menu?
no
Then repeat the screenshot when in level
Well, it does creeping up on ram limit, so it's swapping, but it's not maxed out yet
i have guilded brave and steam open tho its not just osu
You seem to have 2 monitors. Is it working better with 1 ?
idk but i dont think it will make big diffrence i have the other in the desktop
Also, do you use scaling factor other than 100% or 200% for these monitors?
its 100%
idk if it has graphic settings, its just jpegs and circles...
Does the game not have options menu?
uh it has but there are but its not like that good
Why is the FPS limit double the refresh rate
try setting frame limiter to refresh rate
Feels useless, try setting it equal to refresh rate
Btw do you immediately force shutdown your laptop if your system freezes? Bec brave does automatically close tabs when the system freezes but it takes sometime
no, i wait a bit but i cannot do anything
well try to turn on memory saver in brave
brave settings: search for memory saver and turn it on
ty
ok i played with my friend in a steam vc on roblox nothing else open i get like 100 fps
nice
so close at finishing
and it failed...
the installation?
i forgot to disable secure boot, nobara kernel does not support secure boot
ye i think i need to download bazzite... reflash the drive...
fail 2, had to force restart after a 5 minute freeze
WAIT BAZZITE ISO IS 7 GB???
is this the first time you dual boot?
yes
alright, take care so as to not destroy something in the process like your linux mint system
what is freezing exactly? the installer?
weird. I did not try nobara before so idk
well idk why
i dont wanna install bazzite its 7 gigs, then to flash it will take even more...
sad
well imma download it
idc how much it will take... i just wanna play without needing to close half of my apps...
Well I just hope it is efficient enough for you
flashing rn
i did it!
ok nobara doesnt works,
bazzite restarts when im playing roblox
i could try pop_os
even tho i want kdeplasma
can you record a video of it happening?
uh no sry
nobara freezes in the installation
bazzite has a black screen then restarts
could happen even rn
i dont have enough space
and it happenes randomly
like no warning nothing just black screen and then restart
i think imma just switch back to the darkside :O
it will not make a difference, pop_os is based on ubuntu just like mint
windows?
I always have windows for gaming and linux mint for studying and work
thats my peaceful dual boot
i only have 500GB SSD
Will Linux ever fix this? Windows doesn't lock up when it's low on memory.
On Windows when out of memory a single app goes unresponsive. On Linux when out of memory the entire operating system freezes and I have to physically restart my computer.
This one issue forced me to buy a whole new laptop.
yeah i really wish they fix this
ok so it works, i reinstalled mint cuz i f up windows install... now it doesnt freeze so it works but i will keep this open for when i get the ram
Oh man that sucks
You can give Ubuntu a shot
Today I found out that my laptop performs much better on Ubuntu for some reason
i can try but i hate the ui, i prefer cinnamon
Yeah me too
But if you don't have an Nvidia card then no need
Because the whole idea of Ubuntu is because it has better support for nvidia
there is ubuntu cinnamon?
there is a community driven version of ubuntu that uses cinnamon yes
Mint is already a ubuntu that uses cinnamon :P
