Try using portable or install ot via software manager

Portable had the same issue a bit ago and i just fully installed it via software manager and it fixed

switching gui's never wipes your files. the most switching can do is incompattibility with apps from the old gui in the new

like with cinnamon switching to another like gnome. light more and dark mode could be broken

but your files stay intact

oh btw when you switch to kde the theme chooses the start menu icon for you and you cant change it
