I hope u did NOT change the owner of the OS partition
the most sanest way to fix this is boot the live USB, and make a new installation
if you DIDNT change the owner of the OS partition, AND you have a timeshift snapshot, you may restore that snapshot using timeshift from a live boot
i probably did though 😦
i dont hvae a snapshot
i wont be able to recover my themes and config addont etc when i reinstall no?
you can probably mess around to save the configs, but its tedious
lesson:
- dont mess around without accurate good guidance or prior deep knowledge
- have at least one full timeshift snapshot containing system AND hidden home folders in it
- have personal data backed up additionally on a totally separate usually offline drive, like usb
yes sir
and how do i do that
🤷♂️
~/.themes ~/.icons ~/.config ~/.cinnamon
boot live n check if root is still owner of the main folders of / in the ssd
understood but will i be able to acces them at all after i messed around
my whole drive disappeared in windwos
ofc, u can browse data from live boot of mint. windows cant see linux
give me like 15mins imma eat and boot into the linux mint live enviorment i already have an old flash drive with mint on it
hello im using discord on my phone in a very janky way but i opened the love enviorment
ok
its saying a q00gb volume is owned by root
and the others are owned by linux live enviorment
ok
not counting the loop device, nor usb stick
welcome and thanks for bearing with me
ntfs. next
ntfs. next
this is the disk linux was originaly on
(i think)
the 88gb is the one i ttied to ree up and the 51gb one is the linux installation
what I would do is copy off anything u need to keep, data files. from the partitions of this drive, then redo it fresh. and i mean fresh
ok i understand
after they're backed up unplug the windows drive. it is the first pic. n has an EFI partition at start. unplug it. then boot linux live usb. make brand new partition table on the 240 gig ssd. (as GPT) using gparted. and then run the installer, n have it erase n install onto that 240 gig drive
unplug as in physacly?
yes
this is to guaran-damn-tee you get a separate efi partition made by the mint installer
should i format it first so i can make the partion copacity 240gigs
the pic above shows all that needs to be done to blank the drive.
that's after backing up
and unplugging the windows boot drive
understood bit i cant find the .config folder
depends if u made separate home partition or not
you know what?
explore p5 and p6
who needs his old files anyway
mhm
any other data to keep?
nah they are all on windwos
did u even find ur home/userhome?
that stands for 'universal system resources'
🙂
not 'user*
i did find it !
here is my old stuff
ok im anot a man imma copy them
i still cant find config
i found the other stuff thiugh
nvm
this is the drive u will need to unscrew one screw, and pull from motherboard. nvme.
its a m.2 not an nvme
bit i dont want to risk harming my pc is it possabile to do it without
removing it
i did it and im scared
ok hold up
i did it its fine
u removed the nvme ? (safest option by far)
then boot live and wipe the 240
then why the fk are u doing manual mode?
but this appears when i select the ree 240gigs
cuse there is a 10000 gb hhd
but really it shouldnt. when u do erase and install, the next step is WHICH drive to work on
give it the 240 gig
ok
it's a 750 GB
look
i was wrong sry
i added another 0 too XD
just make sure u pick the 240 gb drive to erase n install on
ok
it will show final summary anyway before it starts writing to disk
it finished installing !
good. u see the flags on the right?
yea
u have now an independent EFI partition to boot exclusively LINUX
it says boot,esp
understood
can i plug in my ssd now?
no
ok but what do you mean as in cant i install gnome
hang on
understood
do a test reboot
ok
u got welome screen?
yea
u should make a dedicated partition on the 750 GB drive, strictly for timeshift snapshots
i'd recommend at leasttt 150 GB even 200
u have tons of space on it
but first it needs to be file checked by chkdisk to make EXTREMELY sure it is resizable and healthy. that needs to be executed from Windows environment
ok
so now what
i hide tbe evidence?
as in press the shutdown button
safe shutdown from start menu, always. after complete shutdown,
after complete shutdown, must clean out OLD efi from nvme (CAREFULLY!)
so steps are :
- shutdown
- unplug 240 GB drive to be safe
- replug windows nvme
- boot the live usb again of Mint.
then open Disks app, select the EFI partition of the windows drive from disks app. and mount it . (play icon) then tag me
how tight does the m.2 screw have to be
i know im not supposed to make it firm
cuse the ssd will snap
not tight at all. as long as the stick is fully inserted.
overview - get rid of the ubuntu folder from the windows efi
- boot Windows up and do a chkdsk on the 750 GB drive to guarantee its healthy, no errors.
- disable windows fast startup if it is on
- resize the 750 GB (shrink it by 200 gigs) using disk management or gparted from live mint boot.
- make that space into an ext4 volume called TS_Back so u can store ur restore snapshots there.
oh no the screw fell into the pc
- re-add the linux drive n boot it and set up timeshift. and be sure to include hidden home folders also
gl
cable manegment 🙂 (i couldnt find the screw so i gave up)
oh the screw found ME
it fell on its own
yo
boot windows
yes ur right
i mounted it
good, click on blue link
in the file manager that pops up, right click in space in file pane, and do "open as root"
then show pic
only the ubuntu folder then close the manager
and put my deives in
done
wait. u have to do all the overview i wrote
now to reach Windows, u will need to find it from UEFI
and put "windows boot manager" to top of boot list for uefi things
i booted into it
whats the equivlant to sudo
just right click on windows terminal
ok
now ur command prompt should say C:\windows\system32
it does
do powercfg /a and show result
excellent. fast startup is off.
next, what is the drive letter for the 750 GB volume?
N
drive N: ?
yea

since im in windwos now i can use discord as normal
yea
open Disk Management
in windwos?
yep
find the "new volume" in the diagram (drive n:) right click it, and resize
wait why is the screenshot shortcut now workin
shrink by 200 GiB if u can spare it, (that's 204,800 MiB)
😦 ok
wait
i can do 200
excellent. do you want to relabel "new volume" into something more cool or not?
that's the plain default, non-descriptive label that disk management made
no need
ok next step of overview
this?
u can now shutdown. put the linux drive in, and boot to the real linux
again, u may see TWO ubuntu entries in efi bios now
because bios remembers the OLD one still, plus the new entry from new mint install.
so try to choose the correct one
is there a way to delete the old one
yes but it's kinda tricky to know which is which 😛
ok then lets leave it be
maybe one is with capital U, and one with lowercase u. but leave for now
should i plug my cables back in
yep
are we done removing disks?
yep should be
- make that 200 GiB space into an ext4 volume called TS_Back so u can store ur restore snapshots there.
you can do this from the gnome-disks app in Accessories in Mint
and we must set it to automount, so it's always available when timeshift needs it
tag me when ur in the DISKS app on real Mint
wait so i have to install gnome noe
whats ISTG
there is 1 mint nice
ok u in disks app?
i was refrencing this
launching
yea
choose the 750,. then the 200 gig free space
highlight 200 GB free space, the press +
the button which lets u "add" a partition/volume
did that
aight. let it format
well it will simply show all the info u can read in disks app
label, fs type, size, etc
it did
ok next, u select it
what's NCP mean?
so fix it
nah no need
ok sure
yea
im already scared cuse this is where i broke my linux last time
then tick 'mount at startup'
yea
then in the mountpoint location, put /mnt/backup
its already ticked
just like that
finiahed?
then show pic
.
delete the text and put it in its place?
in filesystem put ext4
when u click OK, it *should * likely prompt u for sudo password
sure
ok. then it should be good to go, once u hit ok
well, first lets see if it works. as it should.
reboot linux mint again.
if it works, u should see a device in your file manager devices section, on reboot , and it will say N-Backup
ye
yea
you can select to 'keep 2' for weekly. that will leave one latest backup, plus one before that.
untick all the other times.
include all files right
well hang on now
u want to save the user's userhome "hidden" files
this is so any major desktop changes/ config files are preserved to how they are RIGHT NOW
since messing with desktop effects n stuff saves in hidden home
ok so all files
done
yea
go back to preferences/ setup
the bak volume
u sure u picked the BAK ext4 volume?
yea
and the weekly and nothing else right?
yea
ok then. click 'create'
this will make a current snapshot, how everything works right now perfect.
in seven days, it will likely make another one on its own
how long does it take to create a snapshot
well ur current system is only using 10 gigs or so right now,
since it's fresh. so probably a few minutes.
ok
tag me when it's done
ok
one last thing @copper cradle
and that is, if u dont want to use the BIOS boot key to choose one OS or another, u have to edit grub n fix it to show both as a black menu.
the timeshift finished
doesnt the grub menu come preinstalled
so this time when u started linux, u didnt get that menu, right?
how u started it, from BIOS right?
it booted straight to Mint right
how do i inafall it
well, do this first
not sure but lets assume yes
open terminal,
yea
do sudo xed /etc/default/grub and show it maximized, full pic
ok how many seconds do you want to see the menu , from which to choose an OS to boot?
5? 8 ? 20
5 mins
minutes or seconds?
minutea
ok so in the grub timeout value put 300
ok
in place of 0
ok
and change 'hidden' to menu
um leave it for another time
ok
there's a bunch of specific instructions for that
now save the file. then,...
in terminal, do sudo update-grub and WATCH IT CAREFULLY.. it should detect n add Windows.
after it's updated the configuration, do sudo reboot and dont touch any key.. wait til u see black grub menu. (hopefully you do)
then u can press enter on either Mint or Windows from there to start either.
it showed up
no
counting down from 300 ?
i didnt notice
did it show windows?
if not, then it's the wrong ubuntu being loaded. u will have to adjust order in the bios boot priorities
when u reach Mint, please show pic of Disks app, full window, on the 240 gig drive selected
that's AFTER ^
after what
and notice the stars
on the small ssd
that EFI partition is starred, meaning it is the one being used to launch linux
u will probably notice your BAK volume also now has a star since it automounts
ok
anything with star is very important to linux, and should not be messed with, without very good knowledge or reason.
SOLVED (did proper full reinstall, with snapshot backups)
hello brother
are you online ?
i kinda need help again if thats possabile
hello. if it's not related, make a new post
ok ill make a new post but its basicly that the computer suddenly started glitching after i installed gpu drivers
make new. do it now.
