Hey there,
I wanted to try out Linux so installed Linux mint. Having 4 drives, with 2 being windows boots (10 and 11) I decided to fully wipe one (10) by selecting "Erase disk and install Linux Mint" as "Install Linux Mint alongside Windows Boot Manager" was only giving the option to partition the drive which I didn't want to do.
Got it installed then eventually got to installing steam and trying to add my windows steam drive which it wouldn't let me due to some permission issues, I went down a rabbit hole on this and figured I needed to add the drives to fstab but this wasn't allowed as the windows didn't have fast boot disabled which is when I tried to boot into Windows but now I have no option to boot into Windows via bios. Windows is also missing from grub.
Anyone have ideas?
I heard maybe I should try the windows installation media for Startup Repair but not sure if that will end up messing up Linux mint and/or the windows further.

make a bootable usb with Supergrub2. make sure u use gpt mode
see #1295728709306683482 for how to make a bootable usb
use the ventoy tool to do so from Linux
once made, you can boot up supergrub through that
and use it to boot Windows
once in Windows, shut down fast startup
Thanks for the quick reply, I'll work on it and get back
for the right supergrub to get, shown as picture, red writing
you'll notice it comes as a .zip. it must be extracted. then copy the .img to ventoy
Just to make sure, I specifically want "Super Grub2 Disk 2.06s2-beta1" yes?
whatever version is current
which says works for uefi and bios, and is meant for usb booting
It seems either Windows was set up for legacy boot
there is no EFI partition at start on this drive.
compare to the linux one
so u may just be able to boot windows from bios, picking nvme1n1 (samsung 980 pro) as the boot device
cuz it's probably legacy-boote
or not
I can only see the linux drive as a bootable hard drive in the bios :/
is it win 11 on nvme1n1?
yep
so win 11 mandates uefi mode
so probably the efi partition got wiped, and it was using another drive to boot win 11
ie : ur win 10 drive
try booting thru supergrub, make sure to launch supergrub in uefi mode
how big size is ur usb stick?
128gb
good.
I'm new to ventoy so just figuring it out sorry
did u find the manual's instruction thing? from this server?
I tried searching for ventoy and boot but didn't find any thread
you'll need 3 things on that ventoy big usb.
- supergrub to let u boot temporarily to windows
- win 11 ISO to fix up a new efi partition
- linux mint ISO in case need to boot repair tool for linux
"how to make a bootable installer usb"
fifth or 6th article at top
dont search,
oh
he needs a multiboot stick
oh srry
to fix up all the major screwups
This one I presume then
yes
.
So I ignore
Go to Options menu, and if your computer is 2014 or newer choose Partition Style: GPT for best results!```
And keep it as MBR?
how old is ur computer?
is this based off motherboard?
amazing:
Type: Desktop Mobo: Micro-Star model: MAG B650 TOMAHAWK WIFI (MS-7D75)
v: 1.0 serial: <superuser required> UEFI: American Megatrends LLC. v: 1.70
date: 08/10/2023
the problem with using mbr is in some cases, the uefi refuses to recognize the stick as bootable/valid
not all cases, but definitely some
okay so gpt for now and if it doesnt work restart with mbr
it'll work dont worry
you want me to run clear ventoy here?
something from 2023 probably wont even boot legacy
no
that's just there to show when ppl screw up the partition style. u have to clear and redo
okay ventoy set up, I assume I need to gather those bootable ISOs now
I believe that's all the files set up.
So I boot into super grub which should let me go into windows if want to temporarily
But if I want fix the boot permanently I'd want to use the win 11 iso to run a repair?
What you'll want to do is eventually make an efi partition near the start of nvme1n1
this can be do using gparted from mint live. however, first test supergrub and windows
Alrighty, so try out supergrub to see if windows boot works then head back to mint to do this?
yep
ty ty brb
Ideally, this is how it should be. you gotta shrink the ntfs partition by 250 megs, then shift it over right,
n shift pt'n 1 also to right
to make room for new green, ESP
and when u set that ESP up, REMOVE the linux drive from motherboard temporarily
then u can fill it with the stuff to make windows boot. shown here: https://youtu.be/CZ17JrgFFhw?t=548 (9:08) CyberCPUTech vid on how to fix trashed Windows EFI partition
Is your system not booting or has something else gone wrong with the UEFI bootloader? If so, this video will show you how to completely rebuild the UEFI bootloader to fix just about any booting problem your having with a GPT or UEFI system.

anyways, did u boot into windows yet, thru supergrub?
Got a quick hiccup. Might be related to the fact that I setup mint with secure boot maybe?
I'm in boot menu with 2 usb partitions
- Does nothing
- Opens
With
"Verification failed: (0x1A) Security Violation" then goes into MOK management
go back to blue screen
https://youtu.be/CuonyS3xdwg?t=303 <<5:03 ThioJoe Ventoy Secure Boot enroll steps
Not a great message:
"Verifiying shim SBAT data failed: Security Policy Violation Something has gone seriously wrong: SBAT self-check failed: Security Policy Violation"
(when selecting super grub via ventoy)
Should I maybe try to follow something like: https://askubuntu.com/questions/1523438/verifying-shim-sbat-data-failed-security-policy-violation/1523439#1523439
turn off secure boot then
Nothing detected under windows vista and newer
well i guess scan for all
if nothing, backup all ur windows data u need, from linux hopefully, or from hirens boot cd ISO, and reinstall Win 11 fresh (with mint drive REMOVED)
It just comes back with the drives under (Disks and Partitions) chain loading but not sure if that means anything
So in other words it can't boot it?
Tried all the rows under the right drive and all failed to boot
at this point, especially cuz u left fast startup on. this would be ur best bet
the key points are: distinct and separate efi partitions, and win. fast startup off.
if fast startup had been turned off before, u could make an ESP on the 980
but it may damage data possibly now idk
