#Ventoy isn't working for me
169 messages · Page 1 of 1 (latest)
Please provide more information about how it doesn't boot? Do you encounter relevant error screens? Or does it just boot you back to your previous OS?
I tried to reboot through advanced startup and it just doesn't show up
Which device did you select from there?
I tried last one but I'm pretty sure it isn't it
My USB stick is plugged in btw
It did work when I just used Rufus tho
Perhaps, try shutting down completely. Then, rearrange the boot order in the BIOS.
Otherwise, use Rufus then. It's for the same means anyways.
Any idea why this happens?
u may leave secure boot on, press ok at this blue screen and enroll the ventoy certificate OR u may go back to bios, and turn off secure boot

Can I just turn off secure boot on ventoy?
Might be better if we tell OP to disable Secure Boot to avoid potential problems on post-installation, what do you think?
meh
Seems I just needed to enroll the key. Thanks for the vid
ok. start it in normal mode. then play around with the OS for a good while. explore all the settings
u cant really break anything in live mode, it saves no changes
unless u do something specifically to internal drive
check that post out the one u made about Linux commands
u got plenty to play with
Ok
and in live mode, its pretty much no worries
Can I enable persistent memory with ventoy?
yes. with extra setup
Any videos you'd recommend?
it's all there
can't be done in live mode, must be set up from your real existing OS
but i wont have to do anything if i use it on another pc right?
i mean that the persistence is on the usb stick and not on the actual pc
that only has up to 4 gigs of persistence. what if i want more?
u can grow it
but i dont recommend going too crazy
persistent live isnt for massive installation or heavy use
i mean something like 16 gigs or something
wdym grow it?
why u need it that big?
ventoy has a sizer program in the ventoy folder of the main package
i just prefer that ill be able to save small works if i do something on linux because some pcs will work faster on the usb rather than windows
well the 4 gigs is plenty
ok
unless ur tyring to save 8 gigabyte files it's tons
Which one do I use? For mint
any casper one
so both 4gig files will work?
there's only one 4gig casper file
look at the image i sent
in ext4
ok
so i put the file (persistence_ext4_4GB_casper-rw.dat.7z ) in the presistence folder that i made inside my ventoy file?
@whole hornet ?
yep then extract it there
So I extract the zip into the persistence folder there?
yep
Would increasing persistence decrease performance?
it can remain there, but the folder is for neatness
would increasing it to 16 gigs decrease it by an amount ill feel if my usb stick has 250 gigs of storage with usb3.2?
it's more to have a custom live environment, with a few added small apps, not massive apps ok
ik
?
u can still use the rest of drive for storage of data
ik. but would i be able to move files into that area while using linux?
if u need that data while in live mode, u will need to press some function key at white ventoy screen to enable the ventoy volume to be mounted
i would caution u not to rely on the stick for important storage
if it freezes, it may be done for good
yeah. its just to move files from one pc to another if i need to work on something without my own pc
.
if u wanted that, this would have been the better option. to set up ventoy with the 'leave free space at end' option
but u can still do it with the function key at white boot screen i heard
i didnt understand line 30
can u explain it?
for the plugin do i just write the path to the iso or including the iso?
.
yes
breh
but that doesnt have any iso files
u see ventoyplugson.exe?
yeh
run it
ok so u opened plugson, u ran the persist plugin button on the setup webpage, and hit 'add', now ur here, yes?
Correct
so, say ur thumbdrive is d:
the iso path n name for top field is, d:\linuxmint22....iso
So u mean the letter at the end of the thumbdrives name?
D
Got it
full path n precise name of iso
next field, full path n name to the perist dat file
So the answer was to include the iso
Is the persistence supposed to be inside the ventoy file?
The .dat file is inside the persistence file
i assume u put the dat file in the folder named 'peristence' yes?
Yes
So can I delete the file called ventoy or will it be used later?
u mean the ventoy folder on the usb?
Yeh. It's currently empty
Btw would the persistence just save whatever changes I make in Linux?
So how do I increase persistence past 4gigs?
And will I need to set up persistence for every distro I'll use?
there some other ventoy persist.exe i think to do that
nah and yah. to just test or install them to hard drive, no. to keep live changes for another time's use in live mode, yes
it is to allow persistence to boot without prompting for that given setup
i'd keep it off
So ur saying that if I don't turn it on I'll have to somehow manually activate persistence each boot to save changes?
if u mess up the persist-saved environment, it's easier to at least get a clean live environment, prompted for such
it's just one key stroke difference
i'd leave it off
How can will I save the changes?
when u start iso, it prompts with persistence or without
u can edit this choice later too, just re-running this setup page
So if I say without it will load with the changes but not save anything in that boot and if I say with it will save whatever I'm doing untill I turn off the PC?
boot without persistence loads no changes. saves no changes
And with it it will load changes and save changes?
Is there a way to load changes without saving changes?
no
i would time how long it takes to boot Mint from the moment u press enter on 'start linux mint' in its black GRUB menu, til time u reach a complete-loaded desktop
Idk. About 15s before I started adding stuff
do u got the json file in the folder, as step 40 says?
Yup. Ventoy.json in the ventoy file
are u booted into Mint live desktop now?
did u save/finalize in the web GUI?
How do I do that?
Idk show pic of full web setup page
if there's some green check it means it's setup next to that persistive listing
Will this work?
so how do i increase the persistence?
im pretty sure it worked
just leave it for now n try linux, geeze
uhhhhhhh okkkkkkkkk
