I downloaded and installed it out of curiosity (which is all I do on Linux right now) and it's just a black screen with a status bar. I cannot reopen the terminal and cannot log out to change back to Gnome. I am lost. Rebooting just takes me back to the same environment

i3 needs a bit more setup than your average environment.

What you need to do is fallback to tty. Ctrl Alt F2/3/4.

From there, run Gnome and do what you want after.
