#With support For Windows 10 ending soon I need help finding a Linux distro for my needs.

The 2 distros that I am looking at are Linux Mint 22.1 Cinnamon and the newest recently public stable release of Kubuntu 25.04

Pros of Linux Mint: I love the weather applet for the Cinnamon task bar. It really helps me keep track of storms and the weather during the hot summer months. Mint performs really good for my needs.

Cons of Mint: I don't like how the volume GUI doesn't show the actual volume percentage when you go up or down. I also do not like how the volume for Mint only adjusts by 5%, without allowing you change its behavior. Also, sometimes but not always, the volume adjustment for Mint doesn't adjust when I use the dedicated knob on my keyboard.

Ok now the pros and cons for Kubuntu.

Pros: I like how the volume adjustment GUI that pops up on the screen for a few seconds while adjusting the volume actually shows the % and it also allows you to change the default 5% adjustment rate to 2% like how Windows does it. A few of the look and feel of Plasma looks nice but not everything.

Cons: I don't like Snaps. KDE does indeed have a weather applet for its own task bar but the functionality is weird and I do not like it at all.

What I need to do, casual gaming for a few hours a week every other month I would say. I mostly spend time with Unity.

I know Debian exists, but I need a newer kernel for Bluetooth 5.2 and WiFi 6E support from my Asus ROG Strix B550-F Gaming Wifi II.

Specs:
CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 5900X
RAM: 64GB DDR4-3600mhz
Storage: Samsung 970 Evo Plus 2TB NVME SSD
GPU: Nvidia RTX 4060 8GB.
Monitor: x3 1080p
Preferred Window manager: X11

Thank you.

25.05 is on hold. You may have to stay with 24.04 LTS, or wait. Either way, interim releases such as 25.05 have a shorter support cycle of 9 months.

#

Snaps can be easily removed. I remember having a similar message about it here. I'll send it later once I'm done with my setup.

#

X11 is not a window manager. It is a display server protocol.

#

24.10 already ships Plasma 6 afaik. That's on Wayland, just thought of mentioning that.

Ah ok

#

Only think I like about 25.04 is the Linux Kernel 6.14

#

I tried 6.14 on Mint but it doesn't seem to like Nvidia as of now

gentle quest
# orchid helm Ah ok

try Tuxedo OS. it uses Plasma 6x, reputably backed. no snaps, full acess to Ubuntu base and universe.

#

or go with Miint 22 (not 22.1) and lock the cinnamon desktop packages. this should go back to having it show volume percent.

#

there might be a way to tweak the volume step in some way via cli or hidden config file, would need to research.

gentle quest
#

no idea. but i'm pretty sure it came this january, in mint 22.1

orchid helm
orchid helm
gentle quest
#

since it's based on ubuntu and that in-turn is based on Debian

orchid helm
gentle quest
#

sureit does

#

not the experimental one on Mint

#

the fully ready one on tuxedo should

#

especially once nvidia drivers are set up. (secure boot off)

orchid helm
#

I've had bad graphical issues with the Brave browser on Nvidia with Wayland about a month ago.

#

The said graphical glitches doesn't appear on X11 or my m1 macbook pro running fedora with wayland

gentle quest
#

u may be able to select xsession from the login screen, desktop options menu in tuxedo OS

#

simply test it out in live mode

#

The default username for a TUXEDO OS live session is "mint". No password is required, you can simply press Enter if prompted.

#

google AI. idk how true it is, but prob. works

#

so boot live, it takes straight to desktop. do logout, then switch sessions n log in as above

gentle quest
gentle quest
#

damn AI saying 'mint' lol

Do take note that Tuxedo uses KDE Neon as a source for KDE related software in their distros.

#

Take that as you will.

#

Likely so.

orchid helm
#

I wish that the cinnamon applet would work

#

Does Mint have a way to right click the task bar to open the task monitor like Windows?

#

I use that when Unity goes wonky

dense pumice
#

Not sure, I don't use Cinnm. I suppose a launcher could do, or Ctrl + Shift + Esc.

orchid helm
#

Ok

#

So I went to my windows install until a fix can be found

gentle quest
#

set up a new mint-support post for that for help by volunteers here

orchid helm
#

Ok

orchid helm
#

Based on what I found, it might be because of my different refresh rate monitors

#

I have 2 monitors that runs at 165hz and 1 monitor that runs at 60hz

gentle quest
#

yep

#

quite possible. the struggle on X display server is real (for that specific desire)

#

do inxi -G and it will show your display server

orchid helm
#

I would use Wayland but the brave browser has weird graphical issues with Wayland + Nvidia

gentle quest
#

Wayland is better, but not quite ready on Mint

#

thus, to satisfy your differing refresh rate whims, go with Tuxedo OS , which offers KDE Plasma - Wayland right after first boot

#

or Kubuntu

orchid helm
#

Kubuntu, I don't like snaps but Tuxedo, it just won't boot for me

gentle quest
orchid helm
#

I use Rufus

gentle quest
#

what part it sticks at?

orchid helm
#

Loading from the USB to install it

gentle quest
#

try ventoy flasher set up in GPT partition style

#

and disable CSM/Legacy boot support in your BIOS if applicable

orchid helm
#

I don't even think my bios has CSM since how new it is

gentle quest
#

other wayland distros: Ubuntu, fedora kde

#

perhaps opensuse kde

#

fedora gnome

orchid helm
#

I might just go with Mint this weekend. Windows froze and crashed 6 times this morning while I was trying to use Unity

gentle quest
#

then u'll need to set both refresh rates to lowest common one

orchid helm
#

I'll just remove the 60hz monitor

#

I don't use it unless I'm baking lightmaps

gentle quest
#

aight

#

if u get mmx64 efi error with Rufus on boot, use ventoy as decribed and in our #1295728709306683482

orchid helm
#

Is that the screen that shows for like 3 or 4 seconds before disappearing?

#

It normally shows after the grub menu

gentle quest
#

it's this blackscreen error shown in opening message, seconds past bios screen #1295810542056902759 message

orchid helm
#

Ah

#

I never had that issue

#

I normally have a black screen that shows some text for a few seconds after the grub menu before booting to the os

gentle quest
#

that's normal

orchid helm
#

Ah ok

gentle quest
#

as long as Mint live boots to desktop, ur fine

orchid helm
#

Ok
