#Authentication is required to update information about software

I updated to Mint 22.1. When I tried signing in it says "Authentication is required to update information about software" and I can't get passed this screen. The cancel button doesn't work and neither does the Authenticate button.

I've been using Mint for years and recently I've been having so many issues with it when before it was rock solid.

from login manager, try ctrl-alt-F2

log in with usual credentials

#

then do sudo apt update and read it all

#

then ctrl-alt-F7 , back to GUI and try entering desktop

well it kinda took me to my desktop, but the popup won't go away. also my desktop background is missing and neither the cancel nor authenticate buttons work still

ALso even though my desktop shows I can't do anything

The only packages I installed are
podman
podman-desktop
nvm
nodejs
brave
sysmontask
flatseal
steam
mongodb

flameshot
libnm-dev

seems like it could be the Update Manager being nutty

trail sparrow
#

Well there doesn't seem to be anything I can do about it...
I might just switch to a different distro. I've been wanting to try out Fedora anyways.

#

I tried killing the mintUpdate process in htop and it refuses to die

You sure just reinstalling the OS would fix your issues? Could fix the issues.

#

Well apparently Cinnamon doesn't like Debian either.
I click the disable box and restart Cinnamon and nothing gets fixed.

#

idk I feel like there has to be something with my hardware that Cinnamon just keeps bugging out on it no matter which version or distro I use.

#

I also tried Fedora with Budgie before Debian and it didn't have this issue. It was having other issues which is why I tried Debian instead.

#

I guess I try Ubuntu with KDE Plasma now.

Well I've been using Kubuntu for a little bit and I had to manually patch the steam desktop file like I did on Mint, but other than that it hasn't had any issues so I guess I'm just sticking with Kubuntu now.

Actually weird thing with kubuntu is that the http server I'm running in the background, the server process just goes to sleep and stops responding to requests until it gets pinged then it wakes up like 5 seconds later.

I got this same error now. Nothing seems to help.
