Helloo, pretty much the title.

I installed Windows (better said Atlas OS), then installed Linux Mint with Dual Boot, and Linux runs fine, until i start windows for the first time, and restart the laptop after that I get the dual boot screen, and if I choose Linux Mint Cinnamon, I get a black screen.

I can boot via recovery mode, and running boot repair via USB stick live environment doesn't help.
It tells me that nvram is locked.

Stuff I tried:

Going back to an older Snapshot (through recovery boot)
Boot Repair
Deactivating Secure Boot
Reinstalling Mint (Same thing happened again)

I've read that the black screen can be due to a Nvidia GPU (which i don't have), or due to secure boot, and windows overriding some stuff in the boot menu.

Previously i've used Belana Etcher to get Linux on the USB, this time i'll use Rufus and will go specifically for UEFI to check if that helps

ensure Windows Fast Startup is off in the control panel of Atlas OS (power options, control what the buttons do, show unavailable options)

#

if it has that.

#

else do powercfg /h off in an administrator command prompt or admin powershell.

#

first, ty for the extremely fast answer

couldn't find the exact option, so I just went directly through admin powershell

light osprey
#

yeah. needed for dualboot. Hope you have better luck doing a UEFI install using Rufus

fair spindle
#

so now reinstalling Linux with Uefi and hoping it doesn't reoccur?

light osprey
#

or try a straight reboot first

#

does your grub menu present the following:
Linux Mint
Linux Mint Advanced options
Windows boot manager
UEFI firmware options

fair spindle
#

yes

light osprey
#

so it's already uefi-installed

#

but u can try a reinstall. only takes 10 minutes on an SSD

#

should show an option to "replace Mint 22.1"

#

just start usb as pic shows.

fair spindle
#

straight reboot is same issue

btw, it doesn't show for me a uefi and a normal version

#

only the usb stick normally, but given that it's already uefi installed i think that's not that much of a problem?

#

btw it says
"Erase Linux Mint 22.1 Xia (22.1) and reinstall"

dunno what exactly the xia means

#

i just realized, i think my uefi/bios also has a fast boot option i'll turn that off too in a bit

light osprey
#

Xia is codename

fair spindle
#

for the version?

#

btw, so that i understand the issue (if it is due to the fast startup)
It's pretty much Windows saying "my fast startup is the important one, don't care about the Linux Boot files"?

#

(extremely simplified)

#

nope, still getting black screen

Installed Mint new, restarted pc, turned off fast boot, booted into windows, restarted pc, booted Linux aaand black screen

#

in boot repair it says locked-Nvram detected. Please do not forget to make your uefi firmware boot on the linux mint 22.1 Xia (22.1) entry

light osprey
#

ya that's nothing.

#

that's just that it can't set the boot order

#

but if 'ubuntu' appears at top of your uefi-bios boot list it's fine

#

dig thru some 'black screen' posts here. some ppl have to do some weird parameter add to the linux startup

fair spindle
#

alrighty

light osprey
#

such as nomodeset

#

or some amd something

fair spindle
#

btw
"LVM State"
Physical Volumes: not ok (BAD)
Volume Groups: ok (good)

#

whats that

light osprey
#

did u set LVM / encryption during Mint install?

#

should be off, the defaults

fair spindle
#

you mean home folder encryption?
did not activate it

fair spindle
light osprey
#

well if u can boot the first time into the installed linux, you can get it from the update manager in the view menu: kernels. need internet working

fair spindle
#

can i also just do it in a recovery mode boot?

light osprey
#

maybe

fair spindle
#

LETS GO

#

it was the kernel version, it seems to be very very oddly specific with what works with Meteor Lake

E.g.
6.8.0-53 Generic, 6.11.0-17 generic works

i nopw went with 6.11.0-17 generic
Booted into Windows, Restarted, Booted into mint, and i got into mint

#

will now update (everything but the kernel, reboot, and if it still works, will mark as solved)
