I installed a newer video card system booted up perfectly. My old second monitor wouldn't plug into my newer GPU. Was actually able to re install my older GPU and my old monitor worked perfectly. I then upgraded my cpu. Booted up several times and no issue. I booted my system up tonight and it comes to this

#

Any help would be muchly appreciated. Thank you kindly

pseudo plank
#

Have you changed anything since last successful boot?

spare girder
#

Hardware wise no. I just took out the second GPU and still not booting up

pseudo plank
#

Ok let's see, can you get to grub menu, bu holding left shift as it boots?

spare girder
#

Trying now

#

Nope. Goes back into that funky smelling output

pseudo plank
#

Try to hold left shift as soon as you turn the power on

spare girder
#

Ok

#

Grub menu is where you choose what boot up mode to use?

pseudo plank
#

It should say grub at the top and list what you can boot to

spare girder
#

It was going to that but now I can't use my arrow keys to choose any of them. It waits a bit and by passes it now

#

Will try again

#

Nope. Tried 3 times

#

It was letting me choose before

pseudo plank
#

Does your keyboard not work? Can you get to bios settings?

spare girder
#

Yes

pseudo plank
#

Do arrow key work there?

spare girder
#

Yes

pseudo plank
#

alright, can you boot to mint usb?

spare girder
#

I reset bios. I can get into grub now and can scroll

#

I never made a usb. I reformatted and fresh install of mint when I switched from Windows 3 years ago

pseudo plank
#

How did you managed to do that without usb?

spare girder
#

Old school. I burnt a cd image

pseudo plank
#

Do you still have it?

spare girder
#

Lol. 3 years ago. I think I tossed most of my old CDs out. I did enable the system back up when I first set it up on a seperate drive I'd that helps

#

Nope. I just found the original cd

pseudo plank
#

Since you reseted bios, and now grub menu works, first check if it boots the normal way

spare girder
#

Nope

#

Different screen. But no go still

#

Grub screen has second option. Advanced options for Linux Mint 21.2

pseudo plank
#

Those are errors about your disk not being able to read.

check the bios for a setting that might be called sata mode, it could be set to ide, ahci or raid, check what is it set to.

spare girder
#

Ok

#

It's set to ahci

pseudo plank
#

Just to test, switch it to other modes, see how it affects the messages

spare girder
#

Rebooting

#

Still at the funky smelling output screen

pseudo plank
#

are there other messages like in the previous screen?

spare girder
#

This is the one I get now

pseudo plank
#

that is with sata mode set to ide?

spare girder
#

Idle was not one of the options

pseudo plank
#

ide not idle

spare girder
#

Ahci or raid

pseudo plank
#

oh

#

so this is on raid?

spare girder
#

It's back on ahci since raid didn't make any difference

pseudo plank
#

Alright, in the grub menu under advanced options there should be an option to boot into older installed kernels, try them

spare girder
#

It's still going through the motions. But looks good so far Houston. Looks like it's re doing a lot of stuff

pseudo plank
#

Photo please?

spare girder
#

It's scrolling pages and pages

#

I chose one a couple pages down. Didn't realize those were different saved kernels. The first page and a half looked all the same

#

Should I have chosen one closer to the top of the list?

pseudo plank
#

Those are still errors about your disk not being able to read. Do you have hdd or ssd?

spare girder
#

I just noticed. It's repeating the same paragraph over and over. It seems to me. I've got old eyes though

#

Ssd

#

WD black 2.0

#

Now just repeating this now

#

Different addresses

#

Reboot perhaps and choose another?

pseudo plank
#

If you can, check if the cables aren't loose on ssd

#

power off pc first

spare girder
#

The SSD where the system is, is one of those little ones that click right onto the motherboard

#

I've got 2 other drives that are actual spindle hard drives

pseudo plank
#

Where the system is installed?

#

On ssd?

spare girder
#

On the small SSD. I forget what you call me. Looks like a memory stick but is an SSD.

pseudo plank
#

Ok.... let's boot into your cd then

spare girder
#

It wasn't working. Trying another usb port

#

Back to grub menu

pseudo plank
#

usb port.... for a cd?

spare girder
#

My new case has no 3.5 or 5.25 bays

pseudo plank
#

Do you have another pc or laptop around?

spare girder
#

I have a laptop upstairs. It's windows based. I'll go grab it. Brb

pseudo plank
#

That's fine, use it to make a bootable usb with mint 22.1

spare girder
#

Ok laptop is running. Fresh 64gig ready to go

pseudo plank
#

Do you know how to make bootable usb?

spare girder
#

Its been so long, memory isn't great anymore. I use to know all that. Apologies

pseudo plank
#

No problem. I use ventoy.
https://www.ventoy.net/en/download.html

just download it and run, choose your usb and click install, then just copy mint iso in the usb

Ventoy is an open source tool to create bootable USB drive for ISO files. With ventoy, you don't need to format the disk again and again, you just need to copy the iso file to the USB drive and boot it.

spare girder
#

I downloaded it. It's not finding jump drive.

pseudo plank
#

Do you see it in windows explorer?

spare girder
#

Sigh no

#

Brand new. Just opened the package

pseudo plank
#

This looks like a usb card reader?

spare girder
#

Micro SD card in a reader

#

It's all I have at the moment. Been using these to program android boxes.

#

Windows acknowledges when I plug it in but doesn't show up in explorer

pseudo plank
#

I haven't used those, but I'm guessing you can't insert the card the wrong way in there, can you?

spare girder
#

Nope

pseudo plank
#

Let's see...... can you screenshot the ventoy window?

spare girder
#

Got it recognized now

pseudo plank
#

that's promising

spare girder
#

Formating now

#

Done

pseudo plank
#

you should see a new drive in explorer now

spare girder
#

Yes. Called ventoy

pseudo plank
#

Yeah, just copy mint iso there

spare girder
#

From the cd?

pseudo plank
spare girder
#

Downloading now

#

2.8 gig. Will take a few min. Old laptop & wifi🙂

pseudo plank
#

no rush

spare girder
#

Done

#

It's zipped

pseudo plank
#

what's zipped?

spare girder
#

The download. It says WinZip file. Not iso

pseudo plank
#

Windows hides known extenstions by default, you can turn that off in explorer properties, and many archive programs can extract iso as an archive.

spare girder
#

Ahh ok

pseudo plank
#

Most liikely it's an iso though

spare girder
#

Cool

pseudo plank
#

So, go ahead and boot from that

spare girder
#

Copy the file to the jump drive?

pseudo plank
#

yes

spare girder
#

Doing that now. Did a properties on the file. Definately an ISO file

#

Done

#

This will erase everything I had?

#

Or is there a repair option?lol

pseudo plank
#

It will give us an environment to work in, and to figure out what's wrong

spare girder
#

Perfect

#

Oh odd. I'm in a grub menu like I'm in terminal

#

grub>

pseudo plank
#

Go to bios settings, there should be a boot menu option or button somewhere

spare girder
#

Ok

#

Switch jump drive to first order of boot sequence

#

I'm in

pseudo plank
#

that should work too

spare girder
pseudo plank
#

Normal mode's fine

spare girder
#

Oops. I did it's own thing

pseudo plank
#

that's fine, should get you to the desktop

spare girder
#

Reboot and make a choice?

pseudo plank
#

just wait for now

spare girder
#

Ok

pseudo plank
#

sd cards aren't exactly fast

spare girder
#

Lol. That's for sure.

#

I try to buy the best locally. Small town . Next to no options now

pseudo plank
#

Ok... let's see if anything else shows up

spare girder
#

Ok holding

#

Went blank and than

#

Still seems to be working

pseudo plank
#

Sdb, whatever disk is that, sure seems to have problems

spare girder
#

I hope it's not my new ssd

pseudo plank
#

We'll see if it gets to desktop eventually

spare girder
#

I hadn't done an update in a while. So I tried one earlier tonight. Had been working nights for a month and didn't touch my PC for quite a while. It was giving me errors that the updates were not downloading from selected hosts. I tried to select others. No other choices stuck. So I rebooted and now this.☹️

#

Houston. We have a bare desktop

#

Looks like a fresh install

pseudo plank
#

Great, at least something to work with. So go to disks app and screenshot it. You can use a web version of discord if you want, for easier screenshot sharing

spare girder
#

The one at the top is the system drive

#

I think the third one I kept only for mirror the main drive

#

Or the 4th. Sorry. I forget.

pseudo plank
#

Ok, so 4 disks. click on each and screenshot the right half of the window (or full window)

spare girder
#

That makes no sense. I install almost nothing

#

Just a few games and map making apps.

#

Now everything is full?

pseudo plank
#

I think you forgot the top 1

spare girder
#

☹️

pseudo plank
#

Hmm.... it seems that the top one is your os drive nvme. sdb is the problem one, it's the 3rd one. Let's check, select the first drive, partition 3 and click the play button, then go to files

#

you should see a disk on the left side, check what's on it

spare girder
#

The cog?

pseudo plank
#

open the file manager

#

from the menu

spare girder
pseudo plank
#

This.... doesn't look like linux drive

spare girder
#

I wrong pix

#

Apologies

pseudo plank
#

ok... let's try one at a time. first eject them all

spare girder
#

Eject? Physically detach everything

pseudo plank
#

you can see eject buttons next to some drives

Then in disks mount the first drive partition 3 (play button)

spare girder
#

The red square with minus sign?

#

Oops. That's delete partition

pseudo plank
#

To the right of the drive

spare girder
pseudo plank
#

stop button (square) also works

spare girder
#

Ok. All stopped but the top one. No square showed up there

pseudo plank
#

Can you show me the file manager?

spare girder
#

Like the file browser?

pseudo plank
#

yes

spare girder
pseudo plank
#

Ok, in disks, click on the top drive partition 3 and photo

spare girder
pseudo plank
#

Alright, this seems to be you system drive. If you go to home folder, you should see your account name and your stuff in there

spare girder
pseudo plank
spare girder
#

@pseudo plank @pseudo plank

pseudo plank
#

I'm guessing it's your stuff

spare girder
#

Yes

pseudo plank
#

Alright, you can press the stop button on the first disk partition 3. Then click the 3 dots in the top right corner of disks window and click SMART data

spare girder
#

Smart not available. Greyed out

#

Would it be easier for you doing voice? Your choice.

pseudo plank
#

Sure, I can do voice, one min

#

Come on in

spare girder
#

Let me go grab my ear buds. Beb

#

Brb

#

Ok where?lol
