New! Confused!

During installation of mint there is a menu where it asks you how you want to install mint to your storage drive. If you don't pick "Install Linux Mint alongside Windows" or manually configure it to do so then Linux Mint takes up the entire drive and everything that was on the drive (ie: windows) is deleted

THANK YOUUU

#

im finally burning it to my usb and im so nervous

#

Although in the long run I know im not making a mistake

#

I just hope upgrading is easy

#

I wanna upgrade to opensuse once im savy enough

static wren
#

Just make sure to test mint in the live environment before committing to the installation. Test that everything works, like wifi, mouse, keyboard, printers, ethernet, sound, mic, bluetooth, etc

latent bronze
#

oh shoot, how would I go about doing that?

warm frost
#

just explore

static wren

The iso image ur burning to the USB has live mint and the installer. When you boot that USB you will be in the live mint environment. It wont install linux mint until you press "Install Linux Mint" in that live environment

warm frost
#

there's no time limit to how many minutes or hours u can spend in the live desktop

latent bronze
#

And live mint will be a testing ground while keeping windows?

#

so, say, something refuses to work, I can always just yoink the usb out and go back to square one?

warm frost
#

yeuh

latent bronze
#

bet

#

see you on the other side gamers

#

oh,,,

warm frost
#

just be aware, u cant install massive stuff in live

#

small apps yes, for testing

static wren
#

Also note that the live environment will be much slower than when it's fully installed. Since it's running off the USB

latent bronze
#

i guess i,,, restart my computer,,,?

#

hrm

static wren
#

Once you flashed the USB, insert it and restart ur pc and load up the boot menu

warm frost
#

what did u make the usb with?

static wren
#

Then select the option to boot from the USB

warm frost
#

preferably uefi usb on a newer pc

static wren
#

Stunner, is there a need to disable secure boot?

latent bronze
#

HAZZA >:3

#

So the testing would be in mint compatibility mode? Or just mint?

warm frost
#

wait up

#

how old is pc?

warm frost
static wren
#

Looks like it has a usb c port

warm frost
#

eh maybe not

latent bronze
#

What's that mean???

#

Cuz the download for this one on the mint website was.... Like 2 minutes

#

IDK if that's a red flag but the one I downloaded for the tester was like an hour

#

Which in retrospect could also be a green flag?

warm frost
#

2 mintes for 2.9 GiB's if on fiber optic internet

latent bronze
#

?

warm frost
#

how big the ISO file?

latent bronze
#

Although I'm not hooked up to an Ethernet cable

#

This one btw

warm frost
latent bronze
#

OH

warm frost
#

are u on fiber internet?

latent bronze
#

Nnn

#

No I don't think so

warm frost
#

then how the hell did u download nearly 3 gigs in 2 minutes?

latent bronze
#

I am really really sorry I'm so lost, these are probably things I should already know

#

Yeah! That's why I was like "hm this feels like a red flag, and the other ones took 2 hours... But."

#

"I don't know enough about this to argue..."

#

And a few people on forums also claimed kernel was p good and the tutorial on YouTube also downloaded it in 2 minutes

warm frost
#

did u reach live desktop?

latent bronze
#

Yes!

warm frost
#

did u connect to internet now in live desktop?

latent bronze
#

Yes! :D

warm frost
#

do a test n show pic

latent bronze
#

EYYY I LOVE DOXING MYSELF :D

#

Sure thing!

warm frost
#

ya so u must have fiber optic internet service

#

cable internet is around 50 to 150 or maybe 200 MEGABITS per second down

#

then installer option: erase disk and install linux mint

#

explore system settings

latent bronze
#

I also got recommended to verify my mint but like

#

Jesus they don't make this shit easy for me. I don't even know how to get to my iso image if I'm running Linux

#

Oh also in this lil testing playground I probably won't have all my space/storage/disk drive, will it?

warm frost
#

hm?

#

just verify it against the checksum on the website

#

if the hash matches, all good.

latent bronze
#

OH I was on the wrong page

warm frost
#

it should show up unless nvme with RST on it

latent bronze
#

Again I'm sorry for the dumb questions but I'm driving myself insane trying to figure out how to do this

#

I guess I do that in the terminal?

warm frost
#

nah

#

u back on windows?

latent bronze
#

I am not

warm frost
#

go back a moment

#

u did things in wrong order

latent bronze
#

Fuck

warm frost
#

ur supposed to verify before live booting really

latent bronze
#

That's why I'm having such a hard time

warm frost
#

unless u had ventoy flasher, cuz it can verify on the boot

latent bronze
#

I guess I just shut the computer down then?

#

Yoink the USB once it's asleep?

#

Shut down*

warm frost
#

yep

#

tbh i would just ventoy ur usb stick.

#

unless u dont mind having the usb locked up n useless for anything else in the future

#

if u have 500 usb sticks, n dont care, leave it etchered.

latent bronze
#

Ehelaags

#

Sorry uhh yeah I'll ventoy it

warm frost
#

#1295816480256163892 message

#

pay attention 4b and all of 6

latent bronze
#

Thank you so much

#

Honestly tho

warm frost
#

easy verify on boot

latent bronze
#

Is there a way to delete everything on my USB, make it usable again and try it on a different computer? Or will ventoying do just that?

warm frost
#

it will do just that

latent bronze
#

Got it

latent bronze
#

Ventoy2disk.exe file.

#

Finally getting around to it haha,,,

warm frost
#

for safety, one should ALWAYS have file extensions view turned on in Windows Explorer settings imo

#

but if ur gonna wipe it soon, no matter

latent bronze
#

AAAAAAA OMG IT WORKED YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

warm frost
latent bronze
#

I did

#

Kinda?

#

its not installing on the old computer and on the new computer irs just not reading my usb at all

#

not sure what I did wrong

#

like its not even seeing the driver at all. I think I may have killed it

warm frost
#

how old is this "old" computer?

#

@latent bronze

#

and new computers sometimes need ventoy made as GPT (step 4b) from the start in order to even see a bootable drive. and fast boot off in bios

latent bronze
#

Well i carried it around in my first and second year in highschool and im 25 now, and it was made by a guy who makes custom computers two years before I even bought it, and it runs on windows 7, so it was made at LEAST 2012

warm frost
#

that's not out of the question

warm frost
#

@latent bronze

latent bronze
#

One sec

#

Fuck I see what I did wrong

#

I didnt copy it. I just thought burning it would be enough

#

thank fuck I got these usbs for free

warm frost
#

do all of step 6 in guide accurately

latent bronze
#

ill see if I can find a smaller driver this time. Tbh the version of mint i downloaded is a lot smaller compared to the usb i have which

#

kinda stings but i mean, whatever it was free

warm frost
#

with ventoy, it doesnt matter

#

u can still use the drive for whatever,

#

unlike etcher

latent bronze
#

wait fr? Even if the computer cant even find the drive?

#

YEAH I.,,

#

I USED ETCHER,,,,,,

warm frost
#

u showed a picture in windows of the d: drive present

#

just put a damn iso on it

latent bronze
#

I cant fucking do that because it cant find the usb

warm frost
latent bronze
#

idk what the hell happened but im not just telling a lie for shits and giggles

latent bronze
warm frost
#

simply eject n replug

latent bronze
#

i took it out, tried it on the new computer, put it BACK in the old computer and ejected it and repluged it like 5 times

#

Im not being obtuse, im not trying to piss you off, im telling you what happened

warm frost
#

open windows disk management, with the ventoy'd usb inserted first. what shows?

latent bronze
warm frost
#

it needs to have ventoy put on it

#

presuming this 115 gig drive is your usb

warm frost
warm frost
#

alternatives to ventoy that still let you flash and image and still have the drive available for data are:

  • UUI (universal usb installer)
  • Rufus
crude mango
#

so like, how did we end up here from just trying to install mint?

warm frost
#

any updates or completions on this, @latent bronze ?

warm frost
#

abandoned, @latent bronze ?

latent bronze
#

tbh, i needed a break from trying to fuck with this
