#Mint not recognizing my 5.1 Logitech setup

I just installed linux so I'm quite new to everything. I installed Pulse Audio Control, but still no luck. The system just doesn't recognize the 5.1 setup, only as a line out. I turned on sound for closing windows and such, whenever I do that I just hear a loud thud through the front speakers and possibly the subwoofer.

Steps to reproduce:
Install a mint fresh linux mint
Plug in Logitech 5.1 X-540

can you show a fairly closeup photograph of the soundcard/connectors on back of your computer, including any CORD(s) plugged that go to the jacks and to the speaker system

It's important to note that on windows everything is recognised and working

Here are the cords:

#

The cords directly go from the subwoofer to the backplate of the pc.

#

I've noticed that the system recognises a microphone input from the backplate, which is not the case, though I don't know how I could change this misrecognition

worn hollow
#

mic jack is mic jack. (pink)

#

unless Windows has some witches brew of code that allows reassigning mic jack to an output of some kind through proprietary soundcard drivers.

#

if you could show the pins of all three cords, side by side.

#

this is how a typical analog-out 5.1 sound card looks like

#
  • pink (mic)
  • orange (rear left & right)
  • pale green (front left and right aka stereo only)
  • blue (line-level analog IN)
  • black (.1 low-frequency subwoofer , and center channel out)
#

all of the above would use the standard 3-contact TRS miniplug, except maybe the pink mic one which may be mono only, so tip&sleeve, instead of tip-ring-sleeve

#

hard to make out the engraved icons exactly on your first pic. a more closeup/focused one with cords unplugged would be nice.

On windows I use Realtek Audio Console version 1.3.180.0, and I can set what each jack does. On the back panel I set
Blue - front left and right
Green - Front
Pink - center channel out/subwoofer

#

I'll send the back io pic in a second

rustic warren
#

Or is there a way to get the Gigabyte Realtek Audio Console working on cinnamon?

worn hollow
rustic warren
#

Yes the translation checks out

worn hollow
#

or software manager for audio hardware jack assignment software, i doubt it though

rustic warren
#

I've found hd jack retasking, but its for Intel HDA sound cards

worn hollow
#

ah

#

only other solution I can think of is USB sound card, with the 5 discreet jacks i showed

rustic warren
#

But the sound system still has 3 plugs, so retasking should work somehow, I mean it worked on windows

worn hollow
#

technically, you dont need the blue line -in

#

just the orange, green, and black jacks

#

plus a pink one if you ever use analog mic

rustic warren
#

I use a usb mic, but I dont want to buy a sound card just to use the 5.1, when the issue is not hardware related

worn hollow
#

this is one of those things of highly Windows-specific drivers and control software.

#

@fading estuary what do you think about this one?

fading estuary
# worn hollow <@162852075762352128> what do you think about this one?

I think this is proprietary bullshit. The line plugs on modern sound cards are not hardwired, they can be routed as needed (within limits). Since this is a niche, support tends to be wonky to nonexistent on Linux. I could not even point out a known well-supported sound card or onboard chip.
There might be ways to re-route the inputs with some low-level fiddling, but unless you find a specialised driver on somebody's github for this sound chip, I see no real path to a solution. Does not mean there is none, but I am not seeing one.

worn hollow
fading estuary
#

Good find. What chip is this even?

worn hollow
#

Realtek something.. think they mentioned

#

nope, wasn't mentioned

fading estuary
#

inxi -Axxxz time, then.

worn hollow
#

@rustic warren please show result of that terminal command from Linux.

#

these freakin' logitech guys really should just make USB soundcards built-into their multichannel speaker packages. One usb A to B cord and done.

fading estuary
#

I've had a 4.1 surround system 25 years ago, when that was a cool new thing. I got over it pretty quickly when I realised how bad the support really was. I do not think this has substantially changed since then.

Device 1 is prolly my gpu, and device 3 is my usb mic

worn hollow
#

seems to use intel hda driver in linux so maybe that jack restask thing may work

rustic warren
#

It doesn't seem to

#

I'll send a screenshot of what I did with it so far

#

Still, the only thing I hear is a few thuds when I close or open windows

#

When I turn on advanced override, I have the option to change the channel group of the individual jacks, would that do anything?

worn hollow
#

probably. use a song playing in backgroun

rustic warren
#

If I'm not mistaken it should look something like this?

worn hollow
#

I have no idea what's going on there. just start simple. do baby steps, and test along the way

rustic warren
#

I am doing that but nothing seems to work, it might be something really obvious im just not noticing it

worn hollow
#

green plug really really should be on green jack for starters (talking physical)

#

then match that in the task software for front main stereo

fading estuary
#

+1 for starting with just the green plug and verifying it does proper stereo. Then add another plug, see what was added, possibly fiddle with it.

rustic warren
#

okay okay, The device should be line out right? there are other options like speaker, headphones etc

#

Just plugging in green, setting it to line out front doesn't give any sound, not even the thudding that has been happening

worn hollow
#

now check ur sound mixer

rustic warren
#

my mixer...?

worn hollow
#

SOUND module in Mint cinnamon

rustic warren
#

you mean the test sound thingy?

worn hollow
#

start menu: preferences: sound

#

set it to amd matisse stereo

rustic warren
#

The furhthest I've gotten is to have it recognize a 5.1 output

worn hollow
#

it's a bit less than detailed in that, so get pavucontrol open n up

rustic warren
#

done

worn hollow
#

then go in pavucontrol's config tab

#

disable all other profiles except the starship matisse one, and the USB mic one.

#

for the starship matisse one, set it to stereo output (no need for stereo duplex, since u have digital mic)

#

then go in pavucontrol's Output tab, and ensure that matisse profile is there .

rustic warren
#

So far so good

worn hollow
#

and while playing a song, u should see a moving line (audio intensity meter) under that output slider

rustic warren
#

Checks out

worn hollow
#

now, ensure its little "set as fallback" check icon is pushed in

#

and make sure mute isnt

#

and volume around 100 or 85

#

then ensure green on green physical jacks. and then play with the tasker thing

rustic warren
#

Do I unplug every other jack?

worn hollow
#

no

#

just make sure green on green physical

rustic warren
#

Green is plugged in green

worn hollow
#

and that ur front speakers are connected to the central hub/amp/(subwoofer) and their cord is in good shape/fit

rustic warren
#

When I sent the screenshots I was switching from win10 and it worked there so that shouldnt be a problem

worn hollow
#

right, now go in the sound restasker jack app

#

it may need an "apply" and reboot so no guarantee it will sound rightaway

#

but basically set the green or lineout jack to perform front stereo

rustic warren
#

Pressed apply, and now I don't see the audio intensity meter, I mean the blue line isnt moving

#

Do I install boot override, and do a reboot, to make sure it applies?

worn hollow
#

im thinking yes.

rustic warren
#

No physicsal sound from speakers, but the system detects it in pavu

#

Only those occasional thuds

#

I did something. I set the config profile in pavu to 5.1 analog output, and setup the jacks in hd retasking. Now instead of the loud thud, I hear an echoing thud, possibly even from the subwoofer

#

okay this is so stupid

#

I unplugged the y splitter from the front IO

#

And magically everything works now

#

now the only thing I need to figure out is how to make stereo output to 5.1 surround, because the realtek driver can do that.

terse loom
#

there is a setting for that that is likely disabled by default

#

called upmixing

#

I believe you symlink /usr/share/pipewire/client.conf.avail/20-upmix.conf into a config dir to enable it

#

or you can manually copy the contents to your config for pipewire

#

I've never used upmixing so I have no opinion on how well it works

rustic warren
#

Funny words magic man! I'll try to cook something with this info

rustic warren
#

okay idk how to do any of these. Could help me walk throug this?

rustic warren
#

Doesnt this mean that upmixing is enabled?

#

Also I've found no file called 20-upmix.conf

#

client.conf.avail neither

worn hollow
#

seems that picture shows that upmix thing is "on" but what's the exact file that picture is of?

worn hollow
rustic warren
#

this is everthing I have in the pipewire folder

worn hollow
#

alright, I'll leave it to michael cuz im not sure

rustic warren
#

That makes it the 2 of us

#

Thank your for your help with the inital setup though!

worn hollow
#

yw

rustic warren
#

Also what I've noticed is, if I set the audio output to stereo, then the back speakers do work

#

Just to be clear, what I'm trying to do is have for example spotify on firefox, which outputs stereo also use my surround speakers not just the front left and right ones. However, if I boot up assetto corsa, or minecraft have them output 5.1 and not stereo, because they both have surround support.

worn hollow
#

you'll get there eventually. once your jacks have been assigned right.

#

this was so far just to set up working stereo sound on the green port

#

which should now work .. thru front speakers.
