Installed Mint on the fully format disk option. on a fairly old pc. this is the error I keep getting. Reinstalled it once. Changed the boot order in BIOS. and changed the Boot Mode. There is no CSM in bios to change.

tiny shell
#

sounds like a pre-2014 computer, right?

fallow fossil
tiny shell
#

boot the live usb up so u can show some info

fallow fossil
#

yes sir

#

im noob. that means " put the usb in and go to the place you installed linux on" right? just to make sure

tiny shell
#

ya to the live desktop environment

#

aka 'boot live'

#

then once at desktop, do ctrl-alt-t

#

then do ls /sys/firmware/efi

fallow fossil
#

ok

#

should i send pics?

tiny shell
#

not just yet

#

what's the result?

#

a 'no files found' means it's booted as legacy BIOS

fallow fossil
#

config table
fw platforn size

tiny shell
#

oh so it's uefi

fallow fossil
#

from auto.

tiny shell
#

do an inxi -SCM and show

fallow fossil
#

my internet is slow sorry about that.

tiny shell
#

turn the megapixels down in camera settings

#

dont need more than 1 Mpix photo

#

or sign into discord from firefox in live mode, and do alt+prntscr

fallow fossil
fallow fossil
tiny shell
#

open gparted from start menu

#

pick the system hard drive in the top right menubox, then show

fallow fossil
#

yes sir

tiny shell
#

ok. did u boot up Mint ever?

fallow fossil
#

what do you mean?

tiny shell
#

because it's using too many GB for a fresh install

fallow fossil
#

I have not

#

and ive told it to do a total disk format

tiny shell
#

should only occupy about 10 GiB fresh

fallow fossil
#

no idea

tiny shell
#

open the app named DISKS

#

then select hdd, then tell me what it says for 'partitioning style'

fallow fossil
#

partition type: linux filesystem

tiny shell
#

no

#

it the first 5 lines of text near top

fallow fossil
#

EFI system

tiny shell
#

ok it's GPT

#

u can read there

#

5th line

fallow fossil
#

would you believe i cant find it?xd

tiny shell
#

go to bios now

fallow fossil
#

yessir

tiny shell
#

put system into pure UEFI boot mode

#

then put loader named 'ubuntu' to top of boot list

fallow fossil
#

Boot mode: UEFI

tiny shell
fallow fossil
tiny shell
#

check for other boot modes

#

that's legacy

fallow fossil
#

i should be changing boot mode and then going to primary boot sequence correct?

tiny shell
#

yes

fallow fossil
#

the sequence doesnt change when i change boot mode

tiny shell
#

ok boot the usb up again

fallow fossil
#

yessir

tiny shell
#

same way as last time minutes ago

fallow fossil
#

its up

tiny shell
#

ok

tiny shell
#

to be sure it's uefi mode , results like last time

fallow fossil
#

sane result

tiny shell
#

then search boot repair in start menu

#

and do boot repair

fallow fossil
#

its asking me if i want to automatically update now

tiny shell
#

nah

fallow fossil
#

recommended repair
createbootinfo summary

fallow fossil
#

imma tell you when its done or says anything.

#

upload the report to a pastebin?

tiny shell
#

no

#

just read it over what it did, so u learn

fallow fossil
#

boot succesfully repaired

#

you may now reboot

#

do i reboot?

tiny shell
#

did you read the summary?

fallow fossil
#

lemme

tiny shell
#

it should have made a UEFI entry in the ESP (partition 1)

#

then you should find Ubuntu, in list of UEFI bootable things in BIOS.

#

and ensure it is at top of list.

#

then it should boot Mint

fallow fossil
#

yep i see it in the report

#

still no ubunto :(

#

lemme check to see if it gives the same error

#

yep

tiny shell
#

alright, then reboot to usb again. same way. pure UEFI

fallow fossil
#

yessir

tiny shell
#

once at desktop do the ls command from before, to again verify you're in uefi mode.

#

u should see all those files n folders listed

#

if you see them, then do this in gparted

fallow fossil
tiny shell
#

once you do the thing like that with gparted, it should show whole hard drive empty / unallocated.. then install Mint again

fallow fossil
#

created now gpt partition

#

it erased all data

fallow fossil
#

imma come back at you in 15 mins or so

#

erase disk and install?

#

no partition? @tiny shell

fallow fossil
#

done

#

@tiny shell do i do anything else or restart?

tiny shell
#

u can check gparted

#

n show it plz. @fallow fossil

#

used space shouldnt be 15 GiB

#

pretty sure of that

fallow fossil
#

yessir

#

its MORE KEKW

tiny shell
#

show full pic

fallow fossil
tiny shell
#

ok maybe it will clean itself. try a reboot

fallow fossil
#

ok

#

same error

#

no operating system found

tiny shell
#

show bios boot screens

#

in its setup

fair jewel
#

PXE is boot over the network

#

notably you need install it and boot it in the same mode

#

eg if you ran the installer in legacy mode leave it in legacy mode

#

or vice versa

tiny shell
#

yeh, their not as of yet seeing the uefi loader, i think

#

aka 'ubuntu'

#

soon will see crazy bios screens

fair jewel
#

I would suggest since you just installed just redo it verify what you set it to

fallow fossil
#

is it ok to send links here?

fair jewel
#

eg set it in EUFI only mode and install

#

and if that doesn't work try the same in legacy mode

tiny shell
#

i had OP start usb in uefi, and confirm that fact

fair jewel
#

great

#

so there is no reason to see anything useful in legacy mode

fallow fossil
#

hmm the problem with the workaround i used was for a specialized custom linux distro called batocera and honestly i haven't really looked into why the work around works and unfortunately the solution there will not directly translate how you'd install Mint https://forum.batocera.org/d/7761-error-1962-no-operating-system-found/7

maybe something here https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?t=362954

I asked another server as well and they told me this

fallow fossil
fair jewel
#

found a thread which said that it only worked for them in legacy mode

#

also make sure you disable secure boot

#

actually sorry that makes no sense in legacy

fallow fossil
#

or the CSM option

#

lemme reinstall imma send a pic of the boot menue

tiny shell
#

well it may say legacy, not csm

fair jewel
#

it probably doesn't use reasonable nomenclature but its required by standard to have that option

fallow fossil
fair jewel
#

the feature is required, the wording is not

fallow fossil
#

i cant find it

#

but he might have also just didnt know the wording at first

#

and with an update "found" it

fair jewel
#

oh lol it literally doesn't have secure boot according to lenovo

fallow fossil
#

its actually a really bad board

tiny shell
#

alternate solution is: boot usbin pure legacy mode. confirm once at desktop, then install as pure legacy, then once done installing, use gparted to remove "boot, esp" flag, and put "boot, bls_boot" flag on first partition

fallow fossil
#

im just broke xd

fair jewel
#

I think legacy mode which doesn't support secure boot by its very nature will be likely to work

#

sometimes there is a buggy EUFI implimentation which is either harder to get to work or doesn't work at all

fallow fossil
#

ok what do i do now? rn im installing mint again and then im going to send a pic of the boot menue

#

is that right?

fallow fossil
#

how do i boot pure legacy?

tiny shell
#

use the red x option

fair jewel
#

in bios disable EUFI boot

tiny shell
#

ur thing may look different

fallow fossil
#

and how do i stop the installation?

tiny shell
#

let it run

fallow fossil
#

ok

tiny shell
#

if it is copying files rn

#

if not, thn xkill it

fallow fossil
#

also can i skip the language packages that take 30 mins to download?

#

its retrieving files

fair jewel
#

strictly speaking if there is no useful info on the disk you can just power cycle it

tiny shell
#

if it didnt get past page4 just xkill it

fair jewel
#

notably don't do this if there is useful data on other partitions on that disk

tiny shell
#

ctrl-alt-t , then xkill , then click on installer

fallow fossil
#

i did it

tiny shell
#

ok. reboot

#

start usb up as shown in my picture, (the red x)

#

then confirm once at live desktop using the efibootmgr command.

#

result of: "no efi var's supported" means u booted as legacy

fallow fossil
#

boot mode: Legacy?

tiny shell
#

yep

#

then check your "automatic boot sequence"

#

and ensure usb drive storage is at top

fallow fossil
#

yep

tiny shell
#

ok. save bios changes, and fire it up

fallow fossil
#

is up

fallow fossil
tiny shell
#

good.

#

open gparted

tiny shell
# tiny shell

repeat this, but use msdos/ mbr as style for partition table

fallow fossil
#

msdos

#

done

#

install?

tiny shell
#

install

fallow fossil
#

ok

tiny shell
#

aka use 'erase n install' option

fallow fossil
#

ok

fallow fossil
#

have mercy on my feeble mind

tiny shell
# fallow fossil

may have to take quickboot off if any issues later on. i didnt notice earlier.

fallow fossil
#

thats easy

#

imagine if it was quick boot all along

#

god forbid someone doesnt wanna stare at lenovo for 15 seconds

tiny shell
#

what was more concerning was that you couldnt find the 'ubuntu' item in the bootable items list. but as Michael said, some uefi , especially from so long ago, are buggy

#

this time around, only name of hard drive must be at top of list.

fallow fossil
#

also im suprised my hard drive didnt fail on me with all this formating

#

it has one feet in the grave rn tbh

fair jewel
#

formatting the hd isn't actually a very intensive operation whatsoever actually

#

which is why its very quick

tiny shell
#

yeah a quick-erase or new partition table just wipes the "roadmap" of stuff

fallow fossil
#

i was shaking in me boots everytime. especially since after every format i had to reinstall a whole os xd

fair jewel
#

basically you are only writing tiny amounts of data to the disk to tell it how to interpret the rest of the space

fallow fossil
fair jewel
#

like rewriting the table of contents in a book but not actually writing to the bulk of the book

fallow fossil
#

got it got it

tiny shell
fallow fossil
#

almost

tiny shell
#

make sure u memorized username and password

fallow fossil
#

username???

tiny shell
#

or wrote on paper

#

the account setup in linux installer

fallow fossil
#

there are 3 partitions this time

#

lemme check what you wanted me to do

tiny shell
#

is it complete or still doing stuff?

fallow fossil
#

complete

tiny shell
#

ok. try even just a reboot

fallow fossil
#

dont change flags?

tiny shell
#

if needing to mess with flags, can do later

fallow fossil
#

ok

#

it worked

tiny shell
#

heyyyyyyyy

fallow fossil
tiny shell
#

hey heyyy congratulations

fallow fossil
#

thank you. it would legit take me months

#

@fair jewel also thank you

tiny shell
#

boot the real mint up

#

then open DISKS app n show

fallow fossil
tiny shell
#

SOLVED (Solution: was older system, so booted in pure legacy, redid the drive as msdos/mbr partition table scheme, and installed)

fallow fossil
#

thanks again.

tiny shell
#

click first partition far left

#

it should say 'bootable' near bottom texts

fallow fossil
tiny shell
#

yeah see it has "BIOS boot" mark

fallow fossil
#

got it got it

tiny shell
#

it redid the partitioning scheme as guid partition table, the installer. but at least this works

fallow fossil
#

may i ask one more quick thing if its ok?

tiny shell
#

yes

fallow fossil
#

how do i check if my nvidia is working

#

it "looks" like it does

#

like im not asking to trouble shoot it

#

just check

tiny shell
#

u can confirm driver using inxi -Gxx command

#

its default using free nouveau driveer

fallow fossil
#

yep works

tiny shell
#

nouveau is open source

fallow fossil
#

and they said it would be hard pffff

tiny shell
#

if works well, keep it

fallow fossil
#

yes it is nouveau

tiny shell
#

if not so well, use driver manager, and choose the 'recommended' proprietary nvidia

fallow fossil
#

again thank you alot

#

you legit saved my ass

tiny shell
#

yw. see #1295728709306683482 for good tips of all kinds

#

@fallow fossil can you do this in terminal before anything else...

fallow fossil
#

sure

tiny shell
#

lsblk -o NAME,TYPE,MODEL,LABEL,SIZE,FSSIZE,FSTYPE,FSUSED,MOUNTPOINT exactly as written

#

seems 29 metric GB got used already

#

maybe cuz big drive, lots of space went into the ext4 formatting

#

show the results

tiny shell
#

1000 - 971 = 29 used

#

29 GB = 27 GiB , so maybe 10 GiB for Mint, and 17 GiB for formatting overhead?

fallow fossil
#

its says unknown columb NAME

tiny shell
#

check all spelling and spacing

fallow fossil
#

fuxed

#

it

tiny shell
#

show closeup

fallow fossil
tiny shell
#

16 GiB went into formatting overhead.

fallow fossil
#

what does that mean?

tiny shell
#

14 GiB went into mint

tiny shell
fallow fossil
#

oh so its a temporary thing

tiny shell
#

no it's permanent. like drawing the lines on road for traffic, still takes up space on the road.

fallow fossil
tiny shell
#

but still im surprised 14 GiB for Mint.. did u already install stuff just now? like big stuff?

#

oh it does use swapfile.. 2 GiB

#

so 12 GiB for mint

fallow fossil
#

rn? yeah my pictures were on my moms phone as backup i was just pasting them in again

tiny shell
#

oh u pasted them before u did the lsblk command?

fallow fossil
#

yes

#

sorry i didnt know

tiny shell
#

u can do a right click on the pasted in folder

#

and properties.

#

and see how much it says used for all those files

#

free -h will show memory and swap file allotted

fallow fossil
#

2.5gb

tiny shell
#

the photos folder?

fallow fossil
#

yes

tiny shell
#

oh so that makes sense now kind of

#

is it saying GB or GiB in properties?

fallow fossil
#

another 15gb coming as well and also suddenly my hdd doesnt seem like on the brink of collapse anymore

#

rn its 6.6GiB

tiny shell
#

see this pic. bottom line is called statusbar.

#

do u have statusbar?

#

if not, go to View menu

#

and does it say GiB / MiB etc on status bar, or the metric way?

tiny shell
fallow fossil
#

GiB

tiny shell
#

you have 915 GiB to play with total

#

alright all seems fine. i was just shocked by the 29 GB thing

#

but we accounted for it all above

fallow fossil
#

ok good to know all is fine. thanks again
