In linux mint 22, stereo doesn't convert into 7.1 audio like it does in 21.3. SO basically, in 21.3, when I play something stereo audio (like youtube, or an audio file) it would play it on all the speakers and subwoofer (which is better in every way) as if it was 7.1. There just wouldn't be individual surround sound because its stereo. 22 plays stereo as stereo, and only plays 7.1 as 7.1. SO on 22, I can't blast music from youtube and stuff because it doesn't play on the rear speakers, and doesn't fully use the subwoofer to its full potential. Yes, 7.1 audio was selected from the sound settings on both of these versions. I struggled for a while trying to solve it, but nothing at all worked so I needed to go back to linux mint 21.3 where it worked. Summary: linux mint 22 doesn't convert stereo audio to 7.1 or 5.1 but linux mint 21.3 does

try using pulse audio volume control, and explore its configuration tab.
Indeed I did. It did nothing. I believe its something that the devs will have to fix. Or perhaps it is the correct way for it to play. But I don't like the correct way to play it in that case. I will note that it plays 7.1 audio files at 7.1
the feature you want on is remixing
I think this can be configured and its possible to default configuration differs
so just checked pulse has this feature enabled looking for the equivilent pipewire config
so here is the config https://forum.manjaro.org/t/pipewire-remixing-channels-from-stereo-to-5-1-2023/146878 channelmix.upmix-method = psd
however I'm a little confused insofar as the only config dir I see on my mint vm is in /usr/share
$XDG_CONFIG_HOME/pipewire/pipewire.conf should be valid
i'll do a live usb of it some time to test this
option one add the configuration to the desired location and either restart pipewire and pipewire-pulse (or reboot) and see if its picked up
option two use pulseaudio
I tried pulse audio before, but maybe I wasn't doing the right thing
