#Display Issue on Linux Mint: Incorrect Resolution and Screen Freezing Without nomodeset

Hi,
After installing Linux Mint, I am experiencing a display issue. Without using nomodeset, the screen stops working after 3-4 minutes. Currently, I am using nomodeset, but the display resolution differs from the actual resolution and shows the display as "unknown display"

Current resolution: 1280×1024
Expected resolution: 1920×1080

Please assist.

that's weird. driver not available for Intel Core onboard graphics

#

what is listed for inxi -C ?

when was this pc/cpu first made?

signal vector
#

that cpu is a first generation core series, but ur bios date says 2021

#

did someone screw with BIOS reflashing?

tropic basin
#

Not sure. I didnt check that much

#

go to the manufacturer's support page for your computer. find the EXACT BIOS (the early version around 2010) for this computer and motherboard and reflash the BIOS back to that image

#

motherboard model H55

#

do NOT flash version 080015 back to it, since that is existing

#

I believe the issue here is the current BIOS is not right.

#

otherwise Linux kernel can and does totally handle intel GPU with its own built-in driver

#

google intel H55 desktop BIOS image

Do I need to change motherboard?

signal vector
#

idk either leave it as is or change mobo

#

or since it's a desktop, add a gpu for PCI slot

#

preferably an AMD GPU from around 2016-2020

I am out of ideas. The only times I have ever seen an Intel iGPU refuse drivers like this were either caused by hardware failure or file corruption. It might of course be a regression in kernel 6.8, in which case your only recourse would be switching distros. You might try (in a live environment) with Mint 21.3, which still defaulted to the 5.15 kernel.

The graphics driver loads at this point, but the screen display does not render correctly and freezes after 3-4 minutes.

Thanks. I'll try with another graphics card. This will take some time. I'll update you

#

I am wondering, How same hardware, graphics card was working for windows and not working for linux?

#

can you check this

# tropic basin can you check this

Looks correct this time. It loaded the driver, detected your display as 1920x1080 and connected via HDMI.
If this works now, take it. But doing the same thing, for it to work once and fail another time, is a sign that something is starting to fail. Might be the drive even.

It's going difficult now to understand which hardware causing this issue.

All you can do is observe, and perhaps start switching out parts (first order is still that GPU). This is a 14-year-old system, so parts starting to fail is not entirely unexpected.
