#Need to open folder/partition as root to create file

This is a new problem, when I first installed Mint I was able to mount and create files on another drive partition without issue. Now it says I need permission and I have to open the drive as root to create a new file.

This is a slight problem because this drive is used by a Windows VM to store surveillance camera footage. I can work around it, but I'm not sure why this is happening all of a sudden.

if the drive partition in question that you need write access on is ext4, then use the DISKS app (gnome-disk-utility) to take ownership of that partition

#

the command is in the gear icon menu

#

note: ONLY change the owner if it's a data drive, not a bootable one

It should say that in disks app as well. Or use

lsblk -f

in terminal

It is an NTFS partition, however apparently the file permissions are set to read only. I think probably did that myself messing around and experimenting but before I do anything else I'm going to boot back into windows to see what the file permissions are there before changing them via Mint.

Yeah I think I made my own trouble here and then forgot I did it 😂

If its mounted as read only its not that you need to be root to write to it its not NOTHING can write to it in that mode

#

May happen when a filesystem is mounted uncleanly eg it was mounted by the vm and you shut down without also shutting down the vm

#

can be corrected with ntfsfix if that is the case or in windows however you please
