#AMD GPU drivers dont seem to load
65 messages · Page 1 of 1 (latest)
first, check if the driver is loaded. lsmod | grep -E amdgpu
seems like it
well then it means that amdgpu is loaded and working. any particular reason you think it's not working?
you can type inxi -Gxxx in the terminal also and it'll tell you everything about your card
my display port isnt working, i cant edit any screen settings, cinnamon is compaining about something, in neofetch it just says GPU: AMD ATI 03:00.0 Device 747e GPU: AMD ATI 12:00.0 Device 13c0 instead of my GPU name and nvtop says there is no GPU to monitor

so theres gotta be something wrong
hm it is loaded
We had somebody else in here with similar issues on a 9800X3D. My guess is that you need the absolutely newest kernels to support these properly, and there is no simple way to get those on Mint. You want something like Nobara or Endeavour.
I suspect it has trouble separating the iGPU from the dGPU, since both are AMD.
im on 6.8, what is Nobara/Endeavour
I am on Endeavour right now, 6.12.1.
Endeavour is an Arch based distribution. Nobara is like Fedora.
ah, but i dont rlly want to switch to a whole new distro just to use my gpu
you can try a newer Ubuntu kernel here: https://github.com/bkw777/mainline
though do keep in mind you NEED to have secureboot disabled because the kernels are unsigned
Install mainline kernel packages from kernel.ubuntu.com - bkw777/mainline
imma try that
what version should i install?
newest stable available
just make sure it is not a -rc release
i mean like kernel version
bruh, I don't follow exactly which one is newest
but I guess 6.12 if available
alr
can do 6.11.x if 12 not available
Other than tinkering with that new kernel, your only other option is wait until Ubuntu comes around to ship a kernel that supports your brand new hardware.
imma try 6.12 and see if it works
are those gonna be an issue?
Yes. It means you are lacking modules for that kernel.
how to i fix that?
I have no idea. If you venture outside the provisions of your distro, you either learn or fail.
that's no good. I don't know why it does that. I think a simple solution is to try endaveour (arch) or fedora in a live boot (from a usb stick) and see if the issue persists
seems like these are missing
you can download them from their websites (try cinnamon or kde spin if fedora, unless you want to try GNOME desktop) and put them on a Ventoy disk

It does not do that because the repositories do not have that. Probably needs to enable the alpha/beta/unstable/whatever repository for this.
Can’t rlly test my other display but in the settings it seems to recognize my GPU
It uses the 6.11.4 kernel so if I could get that to run on mint I could use my gpu, maybe installing the missing dependencies would allow me to install the kernel fully
One thing I could also think of is upgradeing mint to mint 24
what kernel are running currently?
I thought you were on the newest 24.04 already
if still using 22.04 (or mint 21.3) then you want to install 6.8 from kernel manager at the very least
Im still on 21.3 and I am on 6.8
Imma try to upgrade to 24
good
well i need to fix this before i can do that
you can just disable or remove the repository via software sources panel
then add again after the upgrade
alr
or use flatpak/snap ungoogled-chromium and don't bother with repos
how can i list installed flatpaks?
cause i think i have it installed as one
so maybe i can remove that repo as a whole
oh yea, i can remove the repo, have it installed as a flatpak
how do i get rid of that repo, as i cant find anything related to it other than the auth keys
Software Sources
well fixed that error, but still not quite there
You are on an outdated Mint version, making this even harder.
well if i remove that file, it gives me more errors
What you are trying to do is linking repositories together across major OS versions. I think this can be fixed somehow, but you need to know what you are doing, and it is still lots of work. The real solution is using a distro that supports your hardware.
The GPU would be supported on Mint, but I think the Zen 5 CPU is the issue. Too new.
the cpu seems to work fine even rn
Yes, but its iGPU is masking your dGPU, since the driver does not understand the iGPU.
hm, well i dont rlly want to reinstall/reconfigure everything, but i got further in the upgrade
eh, imma install mint 24 via usb tmrw, any advice on how i can backup and restore my data easily?
There is a backup tool.
There is no Mint 24, only Mint 22, based on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS. This will not fix your issue. You need a 6.11 or 6.12 kernel, which you cannot get without major changes on Mint right now. The easiest way to get this is with Nobara or EndeavourOS.
Your hardware is simply too new to run with most distros.
That last line is the best compliment I have ever heard.
