When I try to switch the monitor's refresh rate to a higher refresh rate (from 60Hz to 100Hz) through the Display applet, my monitor ends up in a black screen and turns itself off. When I try turn it back on again.
It ends up in a cycle of turning itself off, and the only way for my screen to go back to normal is when I restart my PC.
Below I have provided information from 'xrandr' and 'inxi -Fxxxzr'
#Monitor switching refresh rate issue (SOLVED)

First things first the monitor supports 100hz at that resolution both according to X and the specs no reason whatsoever it ought not wprk
You have appropriate video drivers and kernel
By display applet I'm assuming that you mean the display settings app that comes with cinnamon?
Also is there anything between the computer and monitor like a KVM, adapter, switch etc?
If not have you tried a different cable?
Yes, thats right
Theres nothing in between my hdmi cable, its directly connected straight into my GPU
Currently I dont have access to another cable
The cable did work fine before i transferred to mint
To switch to the higher refresh rate you can run xrandr --output HDMI-A-1 --mode 1920x1080 --rate 100
if the behavior is the same you can get more info by running
sudo get-edid | parse-edid
You may need to install one or both of those
To eliminate a software issue it might be useful to boot from a live environment like the installer and see if it displays the same issue
This can still be a cable issue, with the cable not quite making the higher rate required for 100Hz. If you can, try with DisplayPort, which is the vastly superior standard anyway. Otherwise try with a different HDMI cable that is proven to work at 1080@100Hz.
For the CLI command, the same problem occured, tho this time I didnt need to restart my pc, I got my screen back from a mouse click. I checked my refresh rate and it was still 60Hz. I tried swapping the HDMI port to my HDMI-0, same problem. Same problem when in live environment. This is what my edid says, I dont really understand since I'm new
I don't have another spare cable to test right now, should I go and order a display port cable rn?
Should I just get one from some random amazon link or do I need to be careful
I do not want to make guarantees that it will work with the DP cable, but since having a DP cable is universally a good investment, it cannot hurt.
Let me answer that with a video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vn2vdQZhs0w
No, they are backwards compatible. You want a 2.0 cable, so the next monitor after this one will not be limited by it.
Or at least 1.4 if the 2.0 ones are too expensive for your liking.
I dont plan on upgrading my system since I'll be moving out in a year anyway but thank you very much for the info
Cables live long lives if they keep working.
Alright I'll return to this when I receive my cable and try it
also perhaps try cinnamon wayland session? im not sure it can fix it though
sadly no luck on wayland either
So my display port came and I immediately swapped out the HDMI cable and it's worked, I was able to increase the refresh rate
Thank you all so much for your help
However I found a new issue that's unrelated and my "Suspend" does not function properly
When I suspend, my PC lights flicker off and back on without me moving any of my peripherals
And my system doesn't wake back up when I click or press a button on my keyboard
My monitor also says that there is no signal
That might be an issue of the B550 chipset. I hear they are wonky about USB. A UEFI update might help.
Alright thanks
Good call on the cable
