my laptop is the dell latitude e6520, with 3 USB ports and 1 audio port, one VGA port, one HDMI port, when I connect my tv to my laptop through the HDMI port, nothing shows, when I go into the display settings, it's just my main screen, any way to fix this?

command 'mok-util' not found

#

did you mean:
command 'mokutil' from deb mokutil (0.6.0-2)
Try: sudo apt install <deb name>

#

@tidal anchor

#

ok I tried it again without the - between mok and util and it said this: 'EFI variables are not supported on this system'

#

here you go

#

anything?

red edge
#

have you tried a different port on the tv and verified that the tvs input is set to the correct HDMI port?

#

beyond that I have seen threads where people were unable to get secondary monitors connected to the nvidia card (as is the case in some laptops) working via nouveau

#

that said due to the age of the machine proprietary drivers may be a nonstarter

#

Looks like 390 is the most recent version nvidia driver that is supported

#

one might wonder if 390 via the graphics drivers ppa would work https://launchpad.net/~graphics-drivers/+archive/ubuntu/ppa?field.series_filter=noble be sure to understand how to switch back via the cli in case it doesn't work correctly

# severe vale anything?

From the inxi output, your HDMI port can only be accessed through the nvidia chip. And your nvidia chip is way out of support for the official driver, 390 was the last version with support. You can still install 390 on Mint 20.3, which is at the tail end of support (until April 2025), or use the free and open nouveau driver, which might not support this.
The easy solution is disabling the nvidia in BIOS and trying to run everything off the well-supported Intel iGPU. Or you start the painful path of getting nvidia to work.

severe vale
#

btw if I install the nouveau driver is it more up-to-date and will I get (possibly) more performance?

ok

#

little off-topic but fps has been getting a little lower recently, like 45 fps, on windows I used to get stable 60

#

and yes I ticked use dedicated GPU if available on properties

#

wow ok

#

well thank you curunir and micheal

weak elm
#

The problem here is that nvidia cannot be arsed to support the chip any more, and they also do not support open source developers. All other GPUs are supported indefinitely, but the nvidia ones are left to rot.

Look at how Jensen is behaving, and how they are pricing things. Gamers have given them a monopoly, and AI has made sure they cannot be punished for anything.

You can solve this easily by getting an AMD or Intel GPU, but on a laptop, you are stuck. You can use the iGPU, it is not all that bad.
