#Linux not detecting hdmi input on docking hub

I have a MOKIN brand usb docking hub (Model: MODKO/05) that has 3 HDMI ports and multiple usb ports.

I am trying to use it to connect two tvs to my (HP model 8824) laptop, both tvs are confirmed to work by using a seperate adapter (hdmi to usb-c), and all other ports on the hub do work

I don't know how relevant it is but my laptop screen broke recently so I disconnected it which is also why I desire to use my tvs

I've plugged in the hdmi cord into the hub and plugged my long usb-c cord into the usb-c port labeled host and into the laptop's only usb-c port (confirmed to work with outputting video) but i don't get any reaction whatsoever from either display, even after rebooting

What resolution/refresh on the tv? Does the hub support it? You said its labeled "host" but the actual requirement for the usb-3 port to work for a display is that the cord and port support DP-alt. You said "both tvs are confirmed to work by using a seperate adapter (hdmi to usb-c)" did you plug that particular computer into those tvs? If so it would indicate that the port at least supports dp-alt

Next up the cord needs to support it.

does the dp part in this img mean it's uses dp-alt or is that not enough info

"Ultra 4K HD 3 HDMI Dock: Laptop Docking Station for easy 4K HDMI, triple monitors on Windows OS. Using HDMI 1 only, up to 4K@60Hz, when connecting dual monitors, the 2 HDMI resolutions will be 4K@30Hz(Follow Your computer desktop resolution). 💖 Please Note: MacOS system laptops only support SST mode, the screen of the external monitor is the same, whether it is mirror or extend."

#

Dp-alt is something that a USB C port can support or not

drowsy relic
#

I've used an hdmi to usb-c with my laptop's direct usb-c port to connect to both tvs

crude hazel
#

Its physically impossible to distinguish you must consult the specs

#

With the same exact port?

drowsy relic
#

the same exact port on my laptop, my laptop only has one usb-c port

#

ive connected it to normal pc monitors aswell before when I helped a friend setup their pc

#

it has supported two monitors before iirc

#

when it still had the original screen non broken

crude hazel
#

Sure this usb supports dpalt?

drowsy relic
#

the usb port on my laptop or the ones on the hub?

crude hazel
#

The cord

drowsy relic
#

I'll check real quick on my laptops specs

#

oh the cord

#

no clue, it's some generic cord I've long since tossed the spec thing for

crude hazel
#

Does xrandr show the display?

the one currently connected is the main tv since im using the hdmi to usb-c adpater to actually be able to use my pc

#

the hub is connected though

#

also i dont know whether or not it'll be anymore helpful but here is the providers list

How can the hub and HDMI to USB adapter be connected at once via a single USB port?

drowsy relic
#

its not, its connected through another usb port, but when i've tested it, ive connected it to the single port

#

i just cant use the pc while its connected because the hub doesnt work for the hdmi and i just have the one port so there is no active screen

crude hazel
#

Also isn't this a laptop with a built in Display?

drowsy relic
#

as said previously "I don't know how relevant it is but my laptop screen broke recently so I disconnected it which is also why I desire to use my tvs"

crude hazel
#

Ah

drowsy relic
#

its a laptop with no top

crude hazel
#

If you plug the hub into the USB port and boot up do you see the monitor turn on and show boot up messages?

drowsy relic
#

not at all

crude hazel
#

Being careful to ensure that the monitor is on the correct output

drowsy relic
#

like i said in the initial post, no reaction whatsoever from either monitor

#

and ive had both tvs for years and years so i know what it looks like and how it acts when it gets an input

#

one tv has literally just one hdmi port, and the other has two but the other hdmi port is firestick so im sure

crude hazel
#

I'd try getting a properly specced cord or at least try another one you have lying around

#

Keep in mind that unplugging and replugging live may not work

drowsy relic
#

the usb-c that i use to plug the hub into the laptop or the hdmi i use to plug into the hub and tv

crude hazel
#

The USB cord between hub and pc

drowsy relic
#

i'll see if i can find another usb-c to usb-c, its the same cord i've used for probably over a year that's like 10 ft long

#

but its had no connection issues before

#

ill find another cord real quick

crude hazel
#

Has it ever been used to drive a monitor?

drowsy relic
#

yes I believe i have used it for that before

#

also the cord i found that's usb-c to usb-c isn't working for hdmi

#

it worked for connecting my android to the laptop for a second and even for usb Hotspot tethering

#

before I switched to the hub for the usb-c port

crude hazel
#

Not about being bad about specifically supporting dplalt

drowsy relic
#

again, i don't know squat for the specs

#

the cord i used that is long is anker brand

#

AFAIK anker is known for quality especially since I've had it for like over a year or more and it's had visibly no fray

drowsy relic
crude hazel
#

No

drowsy relic
#

figured

#

can't the xrandr providers thing show that it detects somwthing?

crude hazel
#

It will show nothing if connected to a cable that doesn't support the feature

#

I would buy a cable then return it if it wasn't the issue

drowsy relic
#

let me go see if I can use a specific pc to test it holdon

#

ill use the long cable

#

only pc that runs windows in the house is a relatives pc and the hub is advertised for windows so lemme test it with that

crude hazel
#

Basically your options are broken unlikely, not compatible with Linux, or cord doesn't support dp alt

#

I would guess its the latter

drowsy relic
#

okay so weird thing, on the windows laptop, when I plug the hdmi cord into the hub, the monitor reacts but after a tiny bit it says no signal

#

hmm okay so windows gave a notification about display connection might be limited

#

so it could be the cord

#

lemme try another hdmi cord real quick

#

okay it may just be the usb c cord because both hdmi cords do the whole reaction thing but don't work
