So, got a laptop here that's windows 11, but it's on ARM architecture. When I look up if theres any distros for ARM, I've seen only server operating systems, and i'm just wondering if there's anything I can do to switch this over to a Linux distro that's not server or if I'm just going to be stuck on Windows with this particular laptop.

To be specific, here's the setup:
It's a Samsung galaxy book (not sure the exact model, msinfo32 gives me "Galaxy Book Go (Wi-Fi)")
snapdragon 7C Gen 2 at 2.55 gigahertz
4 gigabyte ram
Qualcomm adreno 618 gpu
120 gigabyte solid state drive

#

I'm very new to Linux this is probably the second time I have installed it but I'm willing to try anything at least once

thin fable
#

so i've just found manjaro arm, getting mixed signals tho

There definitely are some ARM distros, I would expect more problems than an x86 laptop but you could try it
I wouldn't recommend getting rid of the windows though in case something goes especially wrong

#

I would look into videos about the raspberry Pi, such as from jeff gearling, since he's made a few videos about gaming on a Pi (which uses basically debian with XFCE)

#

If I was doing such a thing I would try debian with xfce to start off and experiment from there

Ubuntu arm as well

#

Fedora workstation aarch64, could work

#

It's prefect distro for your needs

Haven't they brought arm again?

#

@opaque cosmos

opaque cosmos
#

No clue, seems to be in a rocky state though so I'd just hold off

mystic cove
#

Then mb

#

I thought it came back again

#

Since it was mentioned on their website

#

Before that it said it was not avaiable

opaque cosmos
mystic cove
#

Ok

#

I deleted the message

#

I would recommend them to try fedora arm once

After extracting the ventoyxxxx.tar.gz file

#

also Ubuntu has ARM64 versions. Have seen it installed on raspberry pi 4 and 5

#

also u can use the ventoyweb.sh in WSL if the other GUI doesnt work. see readme

mystic cove
#

They are using windows arm

#

Stunner

quartz abyss
#

shrugs

#

WSL

thin fable
#

i'm using a windows 11 x86-64 as well

#

the laptop's just meant for school, and with 4GB of RAM, putting windows 11 on it was a horrible idea for Samsung idk what they were thinking but it's like permanently at 80% usage

#

i've got an ubuntu iso rn that i tried to flash onto a USB from my main system using etcher

#

and then the laptop didn't detect the drive as a bootable device so

#

but that drive has been acting up recently anyway so I think it's just on its way out

opaque cosmos
thin fable
#

doesn't even show up

#

i get windows boot manager and then hard drive uefi

opaque cosmos
#

I mean in etcher

quartz abyss
#

use ventoy and set the option to GPT mode

thin fable
opaque cosmos
#

as?

#

Because if it shows up as something like "Generic USB Flash Drive" theres a good chance its a fake drive

quartz abyss
quartz abyss
#

some bios are fussy as fk and will ignore anything un-modern as a bootable device

opaque cosmos
quartz abyss
#

thus use the GPT option shown in pic above.

thin fable
#

for boot order

opaque cosmos
# thin fable

It shows a location here, did windows show something along the lines of the USB being corrupted after you flashed it initially?

thin fable
#

no

opaque cosmos
#

If it was flashed correctly it shouldn't have a location

thin fable
#

and i made sure to safely eject before plugging it into the laptop

#

thats really weird

opaque cosmos
#

I'd recommend trying ventoy like stunner suggested

thin fable
#

opened ventoy after unpacking the zip, what is happening?

opaque cosmos
#

then click install

thin fable
#

done

opaque cosmos
#

then you can copy your iso to the ventoy partition that should show in your file explorer, not the VTOYEFI partition

thin fable
#

copy, not write?

opaque cosmos
#

copy

thin fable
#

doing it now

quartz abyss
#

afterwards, u may attempt to reboot into the stick

thin fable
#

done copying

#

waiting the 45 like you said

quartz abyss
#

Ubuntu live should take about 2 minutes to boot up (on usb 2.0)

#

@thin fable any progress?

thin fable
#

didn't detect the usb in a normal usb spot

#

decided to try a conversion to usb-c

#

it detected it then

#

changed the boot order to the usb drive

#

saved settings, and now it's updating windows??

quartz abyss
#

make sure it's UEFI USB in the boot order

thin fable
#

yeah it was

#

but it booted into windows anyway

#

and it's updating windows now

quartz abyss
#

kek

#

u sure u got the ubuntu ARM version?

thin fable
#

yeah that's what the website said

quartz abyss
#

kk

thin fable
#

it was ubuntu's website

#

unless someone fucked me over 😭

quartz abyss
#

i mean normally, u reboot, and if boot order is set (or u use the manual boot menu key at startup) u fire up the USB, and are greeted by white ventoy screen

thin fable
#

guess i'll try a different arm distro

#

idk

quartz abyss
#

did u get the white screen?

thin fable
#

i got no screen it just went straight into windows

quartz abyss
#

do manual boot key then

thin fable
#

uhhh does anybody know the manual boot key for a samsung galaxy book go then??

quartz abyss
#

is that a transformer/tablet?

thin fable
#

laptop

quartz abyss
#

oh

#

just google it.

thin fable
#

already on it 👍

quartz abyss
#

aka "boot menu key"

thin fable
#

yeah i got it

#

its f10\

quartz abyss
#

just make sure ur F10 button actually DOES F10, and not some alternate function

thin fable
#

manual boot key menu doesnt detect my drive apparently

#

windows boot manager and uefi hard drive

#

have to go get food, i'll have my phone tho

quartz abyss
thin fable
#

the usb showed up as uefi usb drive in regular bios before

#

and manual boot menu, clicking the uefi hard drive just loaded it into windows.

#

but nothing I do will get it to boot off the usb drive, idk why

#

any time i've tried doing this on a x86-64 system it just worked, plug it in and boot off it, i'm struggling to understand 😭

quartz abyss
thin fable
#

its booting into windows again

#

and the light on the usb drive keeps turning off, as if it's getting disconnected during boot

quartz abyss
#

try a different port. possibly a black usb 2.0 female type A port

thin fable
#

this thing's only got two ports

#

a usb 2.0 and a usb-c

#

usb 2.0 the drive doesn't even show up on bios, usb-c it at least shows up

quartz abyss
#

ok the former then

#

check bios again

#

enable all ports as bootable

thin fable
#

there's nothing on here to enable or disable ports as bootable, whatever bios samsung put on here feels weird

quartz abyss
thin fable
#

looks fine to me

#

also i was looking it up, it looks like samsung just kind hates people trying to install alternate OSes

#

so, idk, it's possible that they did something?

#

not sure what that would be but

#

i'm at a loss

quartz abyss
#

gotta research that thing. is it 32 bit uefi? maybe use a raspberry pi flasher tool for this ARM thing

thin fable
#

I'm not sure

#

idk what kind of uefi it is, i just know that the device itself is arm

#

my working theory is that samsung did something, idk

thin fable
#

tried it on a new usb drive, its working now lmao

#

okay so, new drive now it just stops whenever I click button

#

the first option in the grub menu

quartz abyss
#

any activity light on usb?

thin fable
#

no lights at all, also what I mean by it stops I mean it exits out of the menu and then boots into windows again

quartz abyss
#

did u get ventoy screen?

thin fable
#

so, at least we got further

thin fable
quartz abyss
#

k

#

i dont think it's meant to be

thin fable
#

i figured maybe the laptop didn't meet requirements or something

#

i could try the debian for arm, but if it doesn't work after trying this, i don't think I have the willpower lol

quartz abyss
#

best if use ethernet since it's a net installer

thin fable
#

all ive got is wifi, no ethernet port on this or any kind of conversion

#

is it just a speed thing or can there be actual problems on wifi for a net installer?

quartz abyss
#

well i guees it gives option to log in to wireless networks

thin fable
#

can't hurt to at least try.

quartz abyss
#

link above. including sha256 hash links

thin fable
#

yeah, debian didn't work either

#

clicked install and it restarted the PC

opaque cosmos
#

it's puppy linux based which means it'll be really light

thin fable
#

i've run of out willpower lol, i'll try it later I gotta take a break

opaque cosmos
#

fair enough

#

ARM is sort of hit or miss on linux atm

thin fable
#

lol at least x86-64 is working well enough. I've been considering dual booting my main pc and only using Windows when I have to, for games like call of duty where the anticheat doesn't work yet.
