today at 5, I finished formatting my 2TB SSD (Samsung 870 QVO) [I have set it the delete anything it finds there]. then I noiced it allready uses up 100GB for no reason, no files are or should be in there. but yet, it says 100GB are used up already. according to programm "disks", that SSD is healthy. also I remember naming it "VM", not whatever the OS came up with.

This can happen easily after formatting as some space is taken up by the filesystem register etc. 100GB does seem excessive though.

yes, would have understood 1-2GB maybe, but 100 are way too much. have also just noticed, that my Games SSD also uses 50GB more than it should

You haven't used the disk for anything yet? You are not dual-booting and Windows has accessed the drive (my guess being no since it's ext4)?

I had to wipe my whole f***ing PC, cause nothing worked right (see #1304997475102363708 ) there I also had a bunch of initial installation issues. after wiping everthing, my PC worked again. so in theory, my 2TB drive should still be empty, cause I only formatted it today. my Games SSD has 200GB used up for games, yet it says 250GB are used. as for my main drive, I dont know how much it says it uses

You could however, use btrfs on that disk, disable CoW (which is silly for btrfs but hey-ho) and enable transparent compression to help a little with the space use, you probably wouldn't see a performance difference to ext4 with this.

that tread explain everthing, if moderator are reading this, pls update mint to not use 5%, but a bit less than that on bigger drives
