I just setup my linux and I'd like to back it up on an external SSD so that I don't have to do this again :)

I tried timeshift but it didnt let me because the external ssd doesn't have a linux partition

don't need to make a new partition table, but you may set up an ext4 volume

install gparted, make a new volume on the ssd

#

once done, open DISKS (gnome-disks) and select it, and use the gear icon to take ownership

#

then set up Timeshift
