#How long should the install last of Linux mint
193 messages · Page 1 of 1 (latest)
the boot process (when you start your PC) shouldn't take longer than say 3 minutes. the install itself can take up to 20 minutes. if it is stuck on this screen, it means it crashed.
this means some failure to load the kernel or other processes. usually linked to specific hardware. can you please say what your exact laptop model is?
I'm not using a laptop.....
I got a i5 11400 tho
sure, your motherboard?
It's a gigabyte h510m k v2
Is there like a list of supported laptops and motherboards? I also have a Asus laptop I getting repaired and wanted to download mint on
generally all hardware is supported but some motherboards or WiFi cards may have isses
Ohh ok, what should I do now?
I can't find anything specific to it, are you sure you flashed the image correctly?
I hope so, I just used a program just as a yt tutorial showed me
did you verify the checksum?
I used ethcer
usually involves running some commands in windows powershell
Nope, I just followed the tutorial, the application for flashing did a "verification"
it didn't verify in what I'm trying to say, but I doubt that is the issue. can you enter UEFI firmware setup on the PC you're trying to install?
UEFI firmware is not dependent on the operating system
yeah commonly referred to as "BIOS"
try to find an option to revert to default settings or silmar
😢 Sorry
The only thing I changed in BIOS was the boot option
still
did you revert to default settings?
Yeah
yes
btw, if it still randomly hangs for more than 3 minutes, try compatibility mode
I understand
Do you know any good videos about lunix and how to use it ig, like I've never used a terminal I think
one of linuxmint goals is to not require terminal usage
for most tasks, that is true. but for any further troubleshooting you'll need it
you can look in #1295728709306683482 for basic terminal commands
but the truth is you can only learn the terminal when actively using it
BTW the script stopped at "Bluetooth managent mechanism" probs a good time to say I don't have a WiFi card
I only use lan and don't have Bluetooth
Ok, thanks for the tip.
it's okay
try the compatibility mode then
Alr, it just flew by and stopped randomly
Sure, ok
It's doing its thing
I'm in
Now I just have to install the os on my drive
yes, if it worked and you see a desktop, press on Install to hard disk
Any idea on how to gain control over display settings?
what do you mean?
it's okay, we will figure this out later. it's because compatibility mode doesn't load the graphic driver, just a basic one so that you can get output
after install, we will set this up
will you dual-boot windows and linux or use just Linux?
Plan on dual booting
then I suppose you know how to.
Ooo, im on the section where it asks where to install and how much space to leave
It only shows one drive and I have 3
This is probs wrong but just keep changing the boot drive in the BIOS each time
And it's not the right one I wanna use
please open "Disks" app
well, I meant just for installation, it usually ask you if you want to install alongside windows
I'm there, I see all the drives I have
Yep, and I chose the first option of leaving windows
can you show a picture of the install screen?
which drive do you want to install to?
I do have files on my drives BTW, I think that some how would make a difference
The one that is highlighted, the 245gb one
It's my nvme
so on this one
Yh
press next and then show what it shows
and in the top select drive only this one shows up?
Yh
how much free space do you have on windows?
you can press the ▶️ button and it'll show
exactly
hehe, press the gear icon here and press "repair filesystem"
Alr
how much free space?
okay is good
try to close the installer and open it again
no
Pretty epic if you ask me
My pc tends to be wierd in so many ways and to this day, I get surprised by it
I think this question is small many more
no, they disappeared now
😢
you have pretty little space on your 256 drive. you can make it so that your OS (~40 GiB) is on the 256 drive and your files are on the 1 TB one. do you want that?
How about I check what's taking up so much storage on the drive using windows
Will I be able to just go back into Linux mint from the drive?
what do you mean?
150 GiB on windows is pretty standard, windows itself takes up about 50 GiB
Nvm
Gimme a second then, I'll check windows bcz it's still a bit easier for me to understand
Sure thing
It says I got 90 gb left
make sure to disable secure boot in BIOS and Csm
and in windows disable fast startup
look up online "disable fast startup windows cmd"
will cause issues with linux
Done
BTW, so, is 90 gb not enough for minimum for Linux?
Mhh
Ok, sooo, idk what I deleted but now I have 166 gb of storage left
it's okay
but windows will not be okay with 0 GB left
It will be like a lil baby
make sure to disable secure boot in BIOS
Lol
when you boot up the installer, ping me
Ah shit
I'll do that rn after I get back into Linux
It's stuck on the "Bluetooth managent mechanism"
Again
try compatibility mode
oh and after you boot in compatibility, in terminal run
cat /proc/cmdline
cat - read file contents
cmdline - your current linux parameters
Mhh
@whole sluice ok, BTW, I got to the same screen and the same drive is there and no other
I think I put it in wrong
Shows "no such file"
cat /proc/cmdline
show a image of what it says
now, you need to free some space for Linux. did you decide if you want to keep everything on the same drive or multiple?
Not sure what you mean by that but ig I can just put it on my sata ssd 1tb
That basically just wastes the time then tho, bcz I'm pretty sure that the only drive that pops up is the sata ssd
ah
well, your choice.
there won't be any harm to installing to the sata 1tb
Ig yh
So should I just continue the setup then?
I think I already asked this but, is there a limit on the space needed for Linux mint to properly install?
not really
just keep It above 40 GB minimum
I run my fedora on 150 GiB just fine
I set it to 100 gb
Idk what to expect from Linux anyways
I hope I can stop myself from playing games and doing work
well
hm?
