Hello everyone.

It's my first time posting on this Discord, and I'm not sure I'm posting in the right section, but here goes:

Long-time user of Windows, I'm more and more tempted since a few months to go Linux Mint, and I have 2 questions:

  1. With my configuration, which version of Linux Mint shall I install first?
  2. With the graphics card I have, which driver shall I install? (when I tested Linux Mint some time ago, it only worked in compatibility mode)

Here's my configuration:
CPU
AMD FX-6300
Vishera 32nm Technology

RAM
16,0 Go Single-Channel DDR3 @ 669MHz (9-9-9-24)

Motherboard
Gigabyte Technology Co. Ltd. GA-78LMT-USB3 (Socket M2)

Graphics
2047MB NVIDIA GeForce GT 730 (Gigabyte)

Audio
High Definition Audio Peripheral

Thanks in advance for your answers.

I'm not sure what you mean by which version is suitable for you. If you mean as in desktop environment, you have 16 GB RAM, so I would go with cinnamon for best features and customisability. As for your graphics card, it's still supported under the properitary 470 driver and should work ootb with nouveau. After installing, it you want the properitary one, install it from the driver manager, it should work. When installing Linux, make sure to disable secure boot as it can conflict with Nvidia drivers. If you wish, you can also dual-boot with Windows (if for any reason, installing the drivers will break it)

Thank you for your answer.

By version, I meant that I saw somewhere that some PCs were incompatible with some Linux Mint kernels. As for secure boot, if I understand correctly, it's a UEFI-related option, right? In that case, it's not a problem, I have a Legacy BIOS. Also, what do you mean by "If you wish, you can also dual-boot with Windows (if for any reason, installing the drivers will break it)"?

Use UEFI on modern boards, just disable secure boot and leave it off for the nvidia thing. Also make a bootable USB using ventoy from ventoy.net and use gpt in its setup option menu. This will make it easy to swap out distros on the thumb drive with drag-n-drop transfer. Try Mint 22 Cinn. or if not behaving, try Mint 21.3 edge cinn.
