A friend of mine just tried installing LMC 22 from my thumb drive and when he reboots after installation, he gets a screen:
"BusyBox v1.36.1 (Ubuntu 1:1.36.1-6ubuntu3) built-in shell (ash)
(initramfs)"

How can/does he get past this and/or what command(s) should he enter to get into the initial installation, and why is he seeing this on initial bootup after installation?

#

My LMC 22 is running just fine - I'm really asking for my friend. Really.

plush ruin
#

that error is from some kind of bad installtion.

#

best to ensure fast boot in BIOS is off, as well as Secure Boot .

#

and if dualbooting with Windows, then windows fast startup be off as well.

#

and verify the iso as per the mint install guide

#

then reinstall Linux

weary vapor
#

also might be worth seeing if the checksums math up - look in up online

plush ruin
#

then add the iso

#

u may verify the iso on two phases:

  1. right after downloading it
#
  1. right on the usb itself to ensure proper writes. (ventoy has option for this in its second bootup menu)
fringe sluice
#

trying that now

plush ruin
#

see linuxmint website download area for the sha256 text file to compare results for parity

fringe sluice
#

nope - even a brand new download and install didn't fix it

plush ruin
#

determine the release to market date of the specific computer

#

determine if it live boots. if it's a fairly new computer (last 7 years) it should be made to boot using UEFI USB STORAGE DRIVE (disable CSM/legacy in BIOS options, as well as Quick/Fast Boot, Secure boot)

#

once at live desktop, use gparted application to wipe the internal drive clean. Select drive from the corner box in it, then go to Device: Make new partition table. (use GPT style if pc is within 7 years age)

#

after that, close gparted, launch Mint installer, and run the automatic install of 'erase disk and install Mint'

#

as long as no halts or errors during the installer, then it should be fine to boot after. (one would simply let it reboot with usb stick removed)

fringe sluice
#

OK, how does he get to the gparted app

#

never mind - got it up (gparted)

#

Nope. Still getting the same error message on reboot -

#

His laptop's less than a year old, BTW

fringe sluice
#

Still getting that same error message after install/reboot

#

And he did the erase disk option

fringe sluice
#

I did that to write the .iso to the thumb drive, but it's still not working (also sent you a FR)

plush ruin
#

This must be done first not 2ndly. If ventoy was already on the usb stick, u must click CLEAR VENTOY as shown in pic, then close the app, reopen it, and use that ptn style setting shown

#

no dm's please

#

also add another distro to ventoy. perhaps Ubuntu Cinnamon 24

#

or Mint 21.3 EDGE

fringe sluice
#

still not working on his laptop. He says that till he can get something that works, he'll just run it from the Live disk

OK, the download for ventoy came as an .iso file; How do I get to that part of it - I'm the 1st to admit that I still know less-than-nothing about Linux commands.

plush ruin
#

if using Windows, get the zip

#

on linux, get the tar

keen latch
#

Using LMC 22 on my other laptop

plush ruin
#

then extract the tar.gz file.

#

then have ur USB plugged in, open a terminal next to the file manager, go into the extract folder, and drag the ventoyGUI 64 file onto terminal, n hit enter

#

then put sudo password, and u'll get the thing like in the pic ^^

keen latch
#

Is Ventoy supposed to be on the stick when I go to load the LMC .iso?

fringe sluice
#

This is what I get in Terminal:

fringe sluice
#

Then I obviously did something wrong.

plush ruin
#

you dragged the right file,

#

idk what's the deal with that gtk widget thing.

#

unless Mint 22 is dumb.

#

however, there is a command line way to install to the USB

plush ruin
#

Ventoy is an open source tool to create bootable USB drive for ISO files. With ventoy, you don't need to format the disk again and again, you just need to copy the iso file to the USB drive and boot it.

#

When I open the browser to go to the URL they're mentioning there, I get this

plush ruin
#

log to the folder please

#

the ventoy extracted one inside ur downloads folder. the prompt in terminal must reflect that

#

u may then ctrl-click the address once webhooked in the terminal.

fringe sluice
plush ruin
#

cd Downloads

#

cd ventoy(tab key)

#

all case sensitive in linux

fringe sluice
#

OK, I'm there in Terminal

plush ruin
fringe sluice
plush ruin
#

ya

#

just up arrow

#

for the history

plush ruin
plush ruin
fringe sluice
#

On the Thumb drive

plush ruin
#

good

#

copy the iso to the blank partition of stick

fringe sluice
#

that's the only 'drive' it would let me do it on

plush ruin
#

let it rest a good 45 seconds after it reports to be finished

fringe sluice
#

the LMC .iso or the ventoy one?

plush ruin
#

mint or whatever bootable ISO

#

can put MX linux too or Ubuntu Cinnamon 24.. as many as will fit that u wanna test out.

fringe sluice
#

Hopefully, I copied it to the right one.

plush ruin
#

yes the other partitition u see in Devices is the loader section. nothing to touch there

#

so this is now gonna be used to either boot live and run live

#

on any modern machine

#

plus, it can be used to install with

fringe sluice
#

OK, thanks - as I said, I'm still VERY new at this OS and know very little about the 'how to's' of it

plush ruin
#

if wasn't already mentioned.. main suspects to pick off are 1: windows fast startup (unless the hard drive is already empty) 2: Secure Boot in BIOS 3: turn off CSM/legacy support in BIOS 4: turn off Fast or Quick Boot in BIOS on the target computer u aim to install on

fringe sluice
#

OK, I may be going back over to his place tomorrow sometime, hopefully he can get it installed (he's running a different version (I don't remember which one offhand) via the Live disk

plush ruin
#

btw

fringe sluice
#

Secure boot is off - he made sure of that and fast boot is also off.

plush ruin
#

ur thing should look like this now if set up right

#

u can recheck same way as u launched the GUI the first time

#

also test boot it on urs now

fringe sluice
#

OK, when I formatted the USB, I left it at FAT32; let me redo it with exFAT

plush ruin
#

on the 2nd screen ^^

plush ruin
#

in the options

fringe sluice
#

I will be doing that

plush ruin
#

it doesnt matter anyway fat 32

#

as long as it shows GPT on both sides

#

exFAT is if u wanna put files or ISOs bigger than 4GB on it

plush ruin
#

compare to mint site

fringe sluice
#

I cleared it before running that again.

plush ruin
#

k

#

i didnt know there was another option besides exFAT (default)

fringe sluice
#

i had some problems installing 22 on this laptop, but finally (with lots of help from people like you) got it running.
I really don't know why, after install & reboot, his is showing that message:
"BusyBox v1.36.1 (Ubuntu 1:1.36.1-6ubuntu3) built-in shell (ash)
(initramfs)"

plush ruin
#

initramfs is the very first step of the boot process

#

RAM File System is making a virtual disk in memory

#

from there, the linux kernel loads into it

#

and apparently wasn't

fringe sluice
#

what command should he enter when he gets that to keep it going?

plush ruin
#

there's no magic command that I know of

#

it's a fucked install, basically

#

that's why i said add the 21.3 and upgrade if needed

#

hell the edge version may actually run more stable in fact

#

u may also wanna comb over the BIOS config.. each category for any eyebrow raising flags

fringe sluice
#

i think I'll do that - I'll use my Windows machine and d/l the 21.3 .iso to my thumb drive and have him install that instead (I had that one before 22 and it ran well)
I think he's using The EDGE version off of his stick (Live) temporarily

plush ruin
#

yeah copy it right beside 22 on the ventoy stick

#

and please verify. them both.

fringe sluice
#

checking verification now

plush ruin
#

cool

#

do same for 21.3

#

sha256.txt file would be on the mint download area for 21.3

fringe sluice
#

will do. Thank you, as well for being as patient with me as you've been.

plush ruin
#

noo problem

#

wish u and ur friend luck

#

oh and one other thing

#

u may want to add this to your ventoy usb also

#

since the new installs dont seem to provide much really truly introductory and pictorial material anymore

keen latch
#

21.3's still downloading - only about 10-15% done.

keen latch
plush ruin
keen latch
#

OK

plush ruin
#

and give to ur friend too

keen latch
#

Happened to notice that it's for LMC 18 and not the more recent versions

plush ruin
#

almost all applies, just ignore the KDE parts as that's not a supported desktop on Mint anymore

keen latch
#

Thanks. I'm printing it out for him now (and for myself), 2-sided printing to save paper and make it at least 'look' like a manual.

#

And saved it on both the Linux machine and one of the Windows machines in their respective "Documents" folders.

#

OK, both LMC .iso's (21.3 & 22) apparently passed the verification

plush ruin
#

k

#

test boot both if u want

weary vapor
#

@keen latch apparently someone resolved by switching from RAID to AHCI

weary vapor
keen latch
#

Not yet; I haven’t been back over to his place in a while

weary vapor
#

Ah ok

plush ruin
#

^this is correct

#

@keen latch ^^

#

so try with different USB PORT on ur friend's computer, or with different Linux distro

fringe sluice
#

I used the only two ports he has on that laptop and also tried (besides LMC), Fedora and Ubuntu and got the same results each time I rebooted, so I finally re-installed Windows 10 (originally had 11) and gave the laptop back to him.
He does have another laptop that the battery swelled, and I told him if he can get that one repaired and the battery replaced, we'd try LMC on that one instead.

plush ruin
#

but yeah there's some computers that are just a pain and not made for Linux.

fringe sluice
#

I did try Pop OS and got the same result on reboot

#

And I did use it via Ventoy

ABANDONED (Was impossible on this make/model for MANY linux distros to install on)
