#i F**ed up and need to reinstall

i will try to keep this as simple as possible,

I am starting up with school in 5 days - Network and IT Security
When i bought this laptop it came with win11 installed and it did not take me long time to step over to Linux mint and i LOVE linux mint compared to Win11.

The problem i now have is that i kinda need win11 on the school and need reinstall my win11 that i did a backup of before i installed Linux,

Can i use this win11 backup and install on a VM ? its a big backup with some dokuments and pictures (personal). i belive its a 150gb backup.

Would a big VM with win11 work out or would it kill my main operating system (linux)
Or would taking a backup of my current linux and use this as a VM work better?

AND if that was not enough:
i have used terminal PASS to save a bunch of password, would this also be backed up and moved over to a backup/VM ?

I'd recommend setup Virtualbox on Linux mint, and create a VM with ~180 -200GB virtual drive.

u may need to install fresh windows 11 on it, and then do a restore from the windows advanced repair blue pages in the installer ISO

obv. gotta let the vm have access to (real) USB mass storage on host.

install virtualbox guest additions "CD" for proper screen sizing,

re: password client. not sure what service you're using, but stuff like keepass or bitwarden is cross-platform

otherwise just copy to paper, n copy to Windows

if VM proves to be too much trouble, boot Mint Live USB, and use gparted to shrink the ext4 Mint partition by about 200 GB. (leave unallocated). then just install win 11 to that space, and have a dual-boot system.

*run mint live usb Boot Repair from Live desktop in case windows ruins grub and cant boot linux after.

  • I recommend using this tool shown in video to make a single USB which can contain Windows 10 or 11 installer ISO, AND Linux Mint ISO at once, (if drive is of sufficient size). Very handy to accomplish installs or repairs easily.
