what
he want grub no appear unless a key is pressed
and default entry to windows
ye
that is true
for grub??
please elaborate
Hit those after POST right at handoff
or use Boot Repair to custom set time to 1 sec so u can easily interrupt
see power on self test
is it no longer possible to disable the grub menu unless a key is pressed?
sure it's possible
but if dealing with dual boots unless they were isolated , then why hide it?
seems like op wants that?
okay nvm
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/grub2/+bug/425979
what I said earlier seems to be broken
Binary package hint: grub2
Ubuntu added a patch on top of mainline GRUB and Debian such that holding down the Shift modifier key during boot will cause it to display
the hidden boot menu.
In the original IBM PC/AT design the modifier keys (Shifts, Ctrls, Alts) are handled separately to all other keys. Instead of reporting state transitions the...
works on legacy, and usually uefi. else use ESC
what I said works only on legacy
Simpler way would just put Windows boot manager at top BIOS order
choose ubuntu at POST via boot menu key when wanted
good idea
this works but (both the right and left) shift keys do not open the boot menu
and hitting f12 brings me to the bios settings
same with esc
so put 1 second
does it matter?
i mean its pretty obvios to see something pop up for 1 second
actually i tried it,and setting timeout to 1 or 0 does nothing
it still has a 10 sec timer to select the highlighted os
it only matters if grub default is set to something not 0
do it this way then
i already have
ah
i realised
i havent put the settings for grub in ""
ok i just want-
win to boot by default, and linux to boot when a hotkey is pressed
ive been reading the grub documentation but its not really clear on how to do this
that's what this does
just hide grub menu as per the link I gave and that's it
ah
i also realised that just saving the grub file does now make it do its thing automatically
save file AND run the update command as shown
indeed
im not getting how to set the default number, like how do i find which one win is one?
found by trial and error
in BIOS boot priority setup, look for Windows Boot Manager, and move it to top of list.
then the "uefi ubuntu" second.
@ivory badge no matter what i do the grub menu keeps apperaing, even with GRUB_TIMEOUT_STYLE="hidden"
AND GRUB_TIMEOUT="0"
i did that, every time i boot lin tho it moved ubuntu up
oh. then must be Windows Fast Startup messing up
i turned that off as well
go in n turn off
but what does that have to do with it
?
Believe me it causes problems. Now when you choose to start Windows from the black grub menu, does it successfully load up?
yes
doesnt really matter,i found the number of win
efibootmgr in linux terminal will list the uefi bootables order
then sudo efibootmgr -o xxxx, yyyy
still dunmo how to.completely stop the boot manager from appearing
also.it says turning off fast startup doesnt affect restart
setting grub_timeout to 0 makes it go to 10 secs
i have had it off the entrie time
k put to 1 then
i think its just gonna show when 2 OS r installed
then what is the point of hidden timout
it litteraly says that it doesnt show the menu if its set to hidden
ok maybe custom.cfg isn't what u need. Run Boot Repair from Linux Mint USB session. use its Advanced repair options and set the visibility/timeout from there.
that file from the link i sent
hmm
ive been doing all this in the grub text file
so i have to insert the usb again?
ah then i have to flash the usb again
might take a while
the built in usb image writer does format it before writing right? @ivory badge
would hate if it didnt
yeah or just ventoy the drive so u dont have to waste the drive everytime
what does ventoy the drive mean
it's a loader program to make the usb bootable
then u just copy and paste the ISO to it
ah thats interesting,i was using that usb for a recovery drive anyway
yeah so u ventoy it once, leave Mint iso for emergencies, plus any other bootable recovery images/service, plus any other files.
how large is the iso in the drive again
mint ISO is 2.8 GB
last I checked
whether u use USB Image Writer, or Ventoy, it will be wiped. The difference is on ventoy u only have to set it up once.
how?
i inserted the drive and restarted and nothing different came up
what exactly did you do?
😐
what
i told u to do the Advanced Boot Repair
i thought that would have been a program that was preisntalled
it is preinstalled.. in the live ISO
so how do i acces it?
boot the live ISO up.
and that means...?
boot up the usb stick, the same way u did before u installed Linux Mint
the way i installed lin mint was go into win and click on advanced restart or something similar
just plugging in the usb didnt do much for em
u gotta press the BIOS BOOT MENU KEY within the first 2 seconds when u power on ur computer
then pick UEFI USB device
did so,now?
did it boot to the live desktop?
theres the option to
do it
why coudnt i do this from normal.lin mint?
i dont wanna do this again so tell exactly what
dial it down to 1 second, or uncheck the unhide box altogether.
you can read the report I think it gives once it finishes.
is there a difference in doing this in the grub text file and the configure file?
also it says "grub-efi purge cancelled"
don't purge
also, the boot menu is still visible.and has a timer of 5 secs
ill try to do all of this is in the config file
watch 2nd video. u may have to redo it proper
if you only have one drive to hold both OS, then watch the first 6 minutes only
but it's better with 2 drives, and the Method A shown at 7 minutes in
ive already watched the second video
and no,i dont think i made any errors booting it the first time
is yours single-disk?
yes
which OS are you currently on with atm?
i was updating the grub stuff with lin
and i moved win up the list of things you mentioned
and not lin or the grub menu show
...at all
are you at the Windows desktop?
also i cant get into POST anymore
indeed
run msinfo32
thats.command right?
what does it list for BIOS MODE: ?
uefi
?what is that
nvm
ok next,
search 'powershell' in menu, right click it, open as administrator, enter: powercfg /h off
next, close all that, right click start button, hold down shift key and select "restart"
ive gotten into the advanced boot something something
that should get you to a blue page, select enter UEFI setup
then in there go to boot:
yes from here i can also select use a device and loas into linux
what is the boot mode set to?
uefi.only
should be as just uefi. no legacy or csm
also legacy boot is unsupported
Indeed
next, is there an option in the advanced or boot or config category saying "quick boot" or similar?
there is secure boot (which is turned off) and fast boot(ive set it to minimal, which is the lowest)
well?
ok first of all what is this all for
u want help or no?
i do,but im not gonna blindly follow instructions
and i do thank you for your involvment thus far
it's so ur boot doesnt skip over stuff
the whole issue is clear from wen something was pushing ubuntu back to top of list
next put uefi usb to top priority
u'll need to do the default boot repair to fix whatever mess u did editing grub
after all of that, go back to BIOS via the hotkey at startup
you mean the external drive?
or just what i have already
the live usb
when i just.load with ubuntu the grub menu is appears
ill check if it puched ubuntu back up
also in my desperation i got a grub gui modifier
it does the same things as doing it by text along with not working
but it might help someone else so ill post it
apparently the hack was to keep the timout 0.1 which the gui does
This quick tutorial is going to show you how to get rid of (hide) the annoying Grub boot menu while booting up Ubuntu and make it directly
literally a fresh ticket jst opened re: problems doing that
yes it is
ubuntu is at the top,and i had fast boot to thourugh
wait
did u do the default boot repair to get everything bacck to baseline?
shoudnt secure boot also be on
up to u but it may or may not interfere.
no
idk how accepting Mint 22 is of SB
stunner whats your daily driver os
mx linux
never heard of it
what was it?
idk u said it did
windows should remain at the top of the BIOS priority list
it will auto boot to windows , no menus
but when it does that i cant get into bios POST for somereason
ye its doing that now
i want the menu when i press shift or esc
when u want Linux, u hit the F key or whatever to choose other bootable options, then pick ubuntu, and hit enter twice
and then i go into bios everytime and rearrange the boot order
i ooen my comp mulitple times a day for both man
i think you should get the little boot menu within 1 second of powering on if u press the correct key
the BIOS may even have a settable timeout for that hotkey
i have been pressing when it litterally says "f12 boot options" on the screen
and what shows up?
windows opens
what is that?
and put refind loader as first efi device in bios list
oh that
my brain didnt parse it as the same thing
can it do the thing im asking?
i can also put ubuntu on top and have grub load
ofc it should
or do that
and live with a 1 second timer it wont kill u
it might
that's all i got
ive found its something to do with os-prober
Its output will be used to detect bootable binaries on them and create new boot entries.
Found Windows Boot Manager on /dev/nvme0n1p1@/EFI/Microsoft/Boot/bootmgfw.efi
Adding boot menu entry for UEFI Firmware Settings ...
done
@ivory badge found the culprit
in the file /boot/grub/grub.cfg
if [ "${timeout}" = 0 ]; then
set timeout=10
fi
### END /etc/grub.d/30_os-prober ###
this line of code is causing it
the problem is whenever i change it and run sudo update grub it changes it right back to this code
prro tip:do not change files that say //DO NOT CHANGE THIS FILE//
i changed it and had to reinstall the bootloader
actually no I didn't
