Heyos. I got a problem. I just got into linux and am already faced with a brick wall.

My displays arnt getting recognised and only 1 is on. The other one doesnt work. Ive tried every recommended nvidia driver and then some newer ones. The displays kiiinda worked using the open source driver but after i installed the newest driver now not even that one works anymore.

Installed the newest driver from the nvidia website and the rest using the mint software manager.

what is the rest of your hardware?

#

What version of Mint and kernel?

#

That card has been around for a while so it should be working fine on all three displays. Are you certain any integrated graphics are turned off in the BIOS? If you are on the 6.8 kernel there are issues with a fake display. Using the Xanmod kernel fixes it.

#

Also when you bring the system up, make sure all the monitors are powered on first. What does the Nvidia Settings application show?

Ima go to sleep now. Tmrw ima send all the specs in here.

#

Thx for ur time.

#

Sorry i didnt provide the relevant infos first, am new to this

viscid apex
#

Np am just happy im getting help

rocky vessel
#

its just odd how this isn't working at all for you

#

is the card working correctly in windows?

#

this is a well supported card

#

are you there?

severe canyon
#

odd that nothing is showing in nvidia-settings

#

it feels like nvidia-settings is installed properly but the propriatary drivers failed to install

rocky vessel
#

yeah, something is borked

severe canyon
#

try inxi -Gx

#

and post the output

viscid apex
rocky vessel
#

has your linux mint system been installed for very long?

viscid apex
#

just when using linux ye. It cant detect my displays and just uses the main one

viscid apex
rocky vessel
#

i would consider doing a fresh install

#

just start all over again

#

something went wrong

viscid apex
#

Ima just do that

#

Dont have much on there anyways

rocky vessel
#

install LM

viscid apex
#

Linux Mint?

rocky vessel
#

then update the drivers before you do anything else

viscid apex
#

Lm is what?

rocky vessel
#

don't do any other updates

#

Linux Mint

viscid apex
#

Kk

rocky vessel
#

install linux mint -> update the drivers ->reboot -> update everything else - > reboot -> install other stuff

#

just like its in the order on the Mint Welcome screen

#

probably a kernel got updated and it didn't pick up the nvidia modules

viscid apex
#

K ima do that now

rocky vessel
#

that is why you always want to update the drivers first, then everything else

viscid apex
#

Mhm

#

If the problem isnt fixxef after that i was considering just switching to ubuntu. Ya think that would work a bit better?

rocky vessel
#

that should fix it

#

i'll be here

rocky vessel
severe canyon
#

maybe try a newer kernel before switching

#

maybe the latest nvidia drivers dont play nicely with kernel 5.15

rocky vessel
#

i am pretty busy ATM, do you want to help with this?

#

the only reason i suggested POP!_OS is its a better version of Ubuntu

#

but if you want to butt in you can take it from here

viscid apex
#

A friend of mine also recommended pop os

#

Hmmm i think i am an idiot. I just read this... i didnt do that the first time........

#

5mins of reading vs 4h of brute force....

severe canyon
#

is it working with secure boot disabled?

viscid apex
#

i enabled secure boot, enrolled the MOK and now my 2nd monitor works while using the closed source nvidia driver

viscid apex
#

...it really was just that...

severe canyon
#

yeah linux and secure boot dont mix very well

#

it leads to a lot of issues

meager scaffold
#

I'm pretty sure I have the same issue

#

I tried all drivers in the drivers manager and had and undetected monitor but what I'm confused about is how I already had MOK enrolled and Secure Boot on but no change

#

turned off secure boot, still nothing

meager scaffold
#

They weren't lying when they said linux uses you as the resource

meager scaffold
#

I fixed it

meager scaffold
rocky vessel
#

uhhh no im good :)

viscid apex
#

MOK enrolled and now even my games work

#

Like a charm

#

Lesson learned, 5 mins of reading docs > 4h of brute force.

#

I will do it again tho
