#How to recover data from a HDD

As I was copying files from my backup HDD to my fresh fedora install, it died in the middle of copying the files. How do I get my data back? I am quite concerned about this since it contained not only my files, but my parents' too.

You remember what FS it is formatted in?

warm cave
zinc sedge
#

NTFS or exFAT?

warm cave
#

Fuck, I don't remember it with precision

#

Probably NFTS

I feel sleepy and I need to head to bed soon

#

I reckon someone else can help, be sure to cooperate and give as much info you can

warm cave
#

Fair, it'd be probably for the best to offer support while awake and lucid

Good luck with ur disk!

#

The data ain't going anywhere

#

Refrain from the temptation to plug it In and check until someone tells you to

just open up xdg-open ~
find your second disk in like nautilus etc with 'other locations'
get another disk storage
open up your second disk and copy paste files/folders over to the spare disk storage

warm cave

Only this one and my live cd usb

zenith flame
#

just a method to properly backup storage

warm cave
#

Oh I see

#

However, I don't have such a way to use this method right now

#

Let me see if I have a spare drive (probably not)

#

Yeah, I don't have one of those at the moment

#

The only files I do actually care a lot about are my dad's files

ok. u said you were copying stuff to Fedora install. I assume that's on a newer SSD or HDD

raven frigate
#

i suppose ya

#

now what's the issue?

#

u cant see the old hard drive in Fedora?

#

@warm cave

raven frigate
#
  • what desktop are you using on Fedora?
  • by what exact device/adapter/method is the old hard drive connected to your laptop?
raven frigate
#

ok so it was designed as a portable USB hard drive.

#

check in cinnamon desktop start menu if u have the "Disks" application

#

if not, install it. it is officially called gnome-disk-utility

warm cave
#

Lemme turn on my laptop

#

@raven frigate

#

I have not plugged in my hdd yet

raven frigate
#

then plug it

warm cave
#

Plugged

#

Nothing is showing up

raven frigate
#

hm.

warm cave
#

Yet the blue light is blinking

raven frigate
#

can you hear any noises from inside the portable hard drive?

warm cave
warm cave
raven frigate
#

just gently hold it up to your ear

warm cave
#

Hold up a bit

warm cave
raven frigate
#

ok

#

I guess it's struggling to read. though turn off the Disks application.. then relaunch it soon after

warm cave
#

Turned off the disks application

#

When should I turn it on again?

raven frigate
#

now

#

just to see if it finds the other device

warm cave
#

Nothing yet

raven frigate
#

did the drive get shaken or knocked while it was transferring data earlier?

raven frigate
#

did it lose power?

#

during the transfer, like from a loose USB cable?

warm cave
raven frigate
#

oh i c

warm cave
#

However I wasn't paying much attention to it, I was letting it run on the background

raven frigate
#

check in terminal, with lsusb if you see any kind of usb controller that could be named in a way related to the HDD

warm cave
#

I have 0 idea to be honest

raven frigate
#

ok nothing that seems related to a mass storage controller

#

probably a hopeful sign. If the controller board has gone bad, then the hard drive itself still has a functioning and good platter(s) and heads. this means a repair tech can probably more easily recover it by switching the internal circuit board.

warm cave
#

So what next now?

raven frigate
#

take to repair shop

warm cave
#

Oh fuck

#

My parents are gonna be mad at me

raven frigate
#

that or see if on youtube there are any videos showing that exact model of hard drive, being opened from the case. If it is just a normal 2.5" SATA (notebook-style) hard drive, then u can buy a SATA-to-USB adapter and hopefully still get the data off it/ use it.

warm cave
#

I see I see

#

However, this hdd is literally like, the most generic thing ever

#

I was wondering if connecting it on my mom's laptop could work

raven frigate
#

it's not Western Digital?

warm cave
#

It's a windows onen

warm cave
raven frigate
warm cave
#

I see, thanks

raven frigate
#

if u don't wanna pay a tech, u can see if u want to crack open the outer case, to see if it is a simple laptop-style hard drive inside with a detachable SATA connection.

#

or try right now a different usb cable..

#

a tighter fitting one.. (in case the data pins on the existing one don't contact good)

#

@warm cave ^^

warm cave
#

Didn't work as expected lol

warm cave
#

I do have a uncle who's very tech savvy and does repairs

#

So I asked him

raven frigate
#

confirm what it is.. if the connection is Micro-b, or Mini-b .. or something totally proprietary.

warm cave
raven frigate
#

it's likely USB micro-B

#

ok it's micro-B 3.0

#

get a new cable.

warm cave
#

WAIT, I JUST REMEMBERED MY DAD USED ONE DRIBE SYNC

#

Lemme see a thing

#

Thank God he made me write down his password and login info

raven frigate
#

or pinch that existing connector VERY slightly with pliers.. just a tiny tiny bit of squeeze

warm cave
#

OH MY GODDDDDDD

#

IM SO RELIEVED RN

#

Turns out my dad had turned on OneDrive sync for his user account

#

Which means all his files are on his OneDrive account

raven frigate
#

oh ok cool

#

u sure all?

warm cave
#

Anywaysss, thanks a lot for the help stunner

warm cave
raven frigate
#

try thr plier thing or new cable too

warm cave
#

Yeah

simple mist
#

@warm cave You may want to listen to the drive for any abnormal/clicking or complete silence

#

Either of those things will tell you how sad the drive is
