Hello i have an issue with steam that's getting on my nerves and im wondering if anyone knows what's wrong, i can't add any new drives to steam to install games on and steam cannot open the files manager in any way like for example when i try to check the local files of a game, when steam is supposed to open the files manager it just does nothing and it also does nothing when i try to add another drive, no error message, no popup, norhing, ive tried reinstalling many times from a flatpak, from the .deb and from the terminal and it always has the same issue. I'm new to mint and linux overall so excuse my general lack of knowledge.

thanks for posting the specs. Is your other drive in ext4 format or other?

slim quiver
#

ext4 yes

mystic umbra
#

one point to note: Flatpaks have limited permissions and thus limited system access

#

another tip I heard for steam is change the ownership of the other ext4 drive to the 'nobody' user

slim quiver
#

when i intalled the flatpak ver and tried giving it permission to access anything through flatseal steam would just stop launching

slim quiver

slim quiver
mystic umbra
#

where's it mounted? is it in /media/$user/ ?

#

@slim quiver

slim quiver
#

/mnt/usb-HKVSN_ESSD-T200N_1024G_ABCDEFA82459-0:0-part1

mystic umbra
#

ok open terminal, type sudo nemo and run it

#

then in root nemo, go to /mnt

#

then choose that long name volume as before

#

ie> properties, permissions tab

#

then show pic

slim quiver
mystic umbra
#

ok change the group to either ur user or the nobody user, and set folder access to read and modify

#

and do similar for the last field too where it says folder access

#

then click thr apply to all subfolders and enclosed files button

slim quiver
#

like this?

mystic umbra
#

yes and hit thr apply enclosed button

slim quiver
#

done

mystic umbra
#

and u should be fine

#

u can close root nemo

slim quiver
#

steam still does nothing when i click add drive

#

not even an empty select screen

#

i think its more of a steam problem rather than a drive problem imo

mystic umbra
#

maybe name is too long, i suggest changing it

#

open Disks app

#

click the drive, then the partition with that huge name

#

(usb-HKVSN_ESSD-T200N_1024G_ABCDEFA82459-0:0-part1)

#

then click the gear icon, pick edit filesystem and give it an easier name, no spaces

slim quiver
#

done

mystic umbra
#

try a reboot now

slim quiver
#

ok gimme a min

#

still nothing

mystic umbra
#

is the drive mounted? open Disks app, and click the drive, then show a pic

slim quiver
mystic umbra
#

ok it shows it is, via that blue text, and the play symbol in the highlighted partition

#

so i guess u have to check the steam settings deeper

#

either that or redo the entry in fstab so that it mounts in a folder of your home folder (like one you create and name as 1tbssd)

slim quiver
#

i searched online and it told me that it i needed to give steam permissions with flatseal or install the .deb version and because the flatseal method made steam not launch i installed the deb version, is there a way to change the permissions of the .deb?

#

sorry if its a silly question im new and all

mystic umbra
#

that i do not know as i don't use Steam at all

#

I would definitely think it does have a native setting in it to choose the library storage location

#

you could ask Windows Addict in general chat

slim quiver
slim quiver
mystic umbra
slim quiver
#

it only shows my main drive as the one in use but trying to add another one does nothing

mystic umbra
#

then into that longname folder within it

slim quiver
#

ok im there

mystic umbra
#

can u add that location now?

#

if so, u should be good

slim quiver
#

the thing is steam doesnt even give me the choice to add a location

#

the add drive button does nothing

mystic umbra
#

or sda1

slim quiver
# slim quiver

when i click the local drive to add another one it gives me a drop down menu with the only option being add drive and clicking that just closes the drop down and nothing else

mystic umbra
#

i have a quirky idea

#

go in Nemo to your home folder, type ctrl-H, then go into the .Steam folder

#

what do you see?

slim quiver
mystic umbra
#

You ought to fully, totally shutdown Steam for this,

#

go into the .steam folder

#

what is there?, if it's just another single folder, go into it, and show a pic

slim quiver
mystic umbra
#

ok i see there's some important links in there.

#

those are the folders with arrows

#

what I'm thinking is you use a program called grsync to fully clone that .steam folder (preserving all links and perms etc) to the mountpoint with that stupid long name representing your 1 TB SSD

#

once it's cloned over, then you delete the .steam folder from your home folder.

#

then open two file managers, one with home folder, and other one showing the new place on the new drive the .steam folder got cloned to

#

and u ctrl-drag the .steam icon back to home folder, and that should give a menu to make a SYMLINK

#

so now in home, a .steam symlink folder icon appears, but links to the large storage space instead.

#

afterwards, u can run steam up again, and check Storage tab, and u should see u have 1 TB or so of available storage.

slim quiver
#

it doent give me the symlink option

mystic umbra
#

in that case just right-click the .steam folder that u cloned over to the big drive, and pick "create symlink" it will make one there, and then u just cut and paste it back to ur real home folder.

slim quiver
#

it doesnt show the option to create symlink

mystic umbra
#

it should near the bottom of the context menu

#

or do it from the File menu in the menu bar

slim quiver
#

is it the sharing option

mystic umbra
#

no

slim quiver
#

then its not there

mystic umbra
#

do u have a menu bar in the Nemo file manager?

#

if not, right click the toolbar, and enable it

#

wait nvm u do have it. saw old pics

#

practice with any other file or folder. select it, then go to the File menu, and choose "make symbolic link" or "create symlink"

slim quiver
#

its still not showing up

mystic umbra
#

well leave it for another time. it's got to be there. if not, research how to make it.

#

ctrl-drag any file or folder in Cinnamon usually gives the option

slim quiver
#

ok ill search for it tomorrow

#

thanks for sticking with me tho

#

ik its frustrating

mystic umbra
#

k np. better luck tomorrow

slim quiver
#

thank you ill tell you if i find anything

#

have a good day/night

mystic umbra
#

I make my symlinks by opening the folder of the file or folder I want to link to and the folder I want the link to go into, then press and hold down the SHIFT and CTRL keys while dragging the folder or file being linked and dropping it where I want the symlink to appear.

#

i guess it's shift plus ctrl plus drag
