okay so
what i did now was i used ventoy to fix up my usb then used balenaetcher to flash the iso file
so the only thing on the USB is linux mint, right?
yes
alright
can you go into windows and send me a picture of the files in the usb stick?
my usb isnt showung up wth
according to github my usb is dead
when u create a bootable drive all ur usb data gets lost
yeah ik, thats what should happen
@exotic marsh i think you should format ur usb stick and reflash it only with balena etcher
idk why the drive isnt showing up in windows anymore tho
so to format it
i use ventoy no?
no
use rufus
why rufus
cuz why not its good too
i mean etcher is more reliable and its pretty much designed for linux distros
i used rufuse and it didnt work
ok use balena etcher then
actually i dont think u have to format it cuz etcher will do it automatically
yea balena is much simpler
i mea when i used etcher the first time
it worked
but there were no partitions at all
like
the partition screen had nothing and any button i pressed would crash the installer
u got one drive in ur laptop right? and how many partition its got u have to identify each partition when installing linux mint it will be like sda1 a2 something like that u have to select the one which is unallocated its hard to figure it out
you should vids
cant help u with writing text
why is your windows system only 500 megabytes
thats not my pic
ohh ok
but like the first time just had nothing, then after couldnt boot linux at all, came up w the error first mentioned, ventoy fixed it but now new problem
ok so, i think we should do the entire thing from scratch
no ventoy, no rufus, just balena etcher
are you in windows rn?
ok i want you to plug in that usb and flash it with balena etcher
this is what my other usb is showing up as now
wth does that mean
btw its flashing
no idea, i've had that happen before too
now neither ofthe usbs show up in explorer wth
ok thats fine
thats inappropriate
do you now how to boot from usb?
i just press boot into usb? or do i just open linux mint like normal
boot into linux mint
have you restarted the flashing?
yes
ive redownloaded the iso like 3 times man
theres a tiny windows man in my laptop whose sole purpose is to mess up me downloading linux
flash is done
ok restart ur pc and boot into mint
yup
ok so can u like send me pictures of the process
everythings going normally rn
ok that's good
its only /dev/sda
ok click on Change... and see if anything happens
it crashes
the entire system crashes?
the installer crashes
the video isnt for beginners
it shows a terminal in like the first frame
@exotic marsh relaunch the installer and show me each screen
ok good so far
then goes to the screen i alr senr
just straight into that screen?
ok i have an idea
change mount point to /
open your file explorer in mint
yeah
click used and see what part is free
idk what that is
just open your file explorer
its open
alr show me
can u retake pls
ayo u connected to internet?
yes
ok so, linux mint doesnt see your windows drive
can you open your terminal and run the command lsblk and show me the output?
So it just straight up doesn't see the drive
linux and i were never meant to be
yup
anything in there?
nvidia drivers and xserver xorg video nouveau drivers
can u send me a pic
shit actually isnt possible bro
intel RST bro
huj
dual boot
ok i come with some new information
try doing sudo apt purge dmraid in ya terminal
got to turn off "Windows Fast Startup" in Windows
AND
Intel Rapid Storage in BIOS
turned off the first thing
ok now try the installer again
the installer isnt opening
wtf?
this stuff is sodumb bruh
yeah, right clickrd and pressed open too
ok try running mint-installer in your terminal and tell me what it says
command not found
Uh can I have you try something fresh?
2 things just popped uo
first step. see how your Windows is installed, because for a dual boot, you'll want to make absolutely sure that Linux gets installed the same way.
wtf is this command
don't worry about that. you can reboot the live usb. but first please go to windows.
guess i thought that command existed... lol
it's mintinstall or mint-install anyway.
@exotic marsh let me know when you're back in Windows.
back
then type msconfig32 in a run prompt.
look at the information it gives, about if it is run currently as BIOS or as UEFI
hang on , let me recheck the name
open dxdiag
u'll get all the info there
the program was called msinfo32
yeah that opens what i was just in
great. so you'll want to make sure that u boot the USB up a) in UEFI mode and b) with intel RST turned OFF in the BIOS (if it is present). one more things, can u open Windows Disk management right now please.
find your c: drive.. it's probably Disk 0 yes?
yes
usually. the BIOS will warn you first of any cautions.
ok hover over the word "Disk 0", then right click and pick properties, then check in the Volumes tab.
is the disk partitioning scheme as GPT?
no volumes tab
u got 2.8 gb un allocated space bro
try again exactly like this
k. it is GPT.. next thing .. check if Bitlocker is on.
ok good it is off.
it would be good at this time if you have any very important files on Windows to back them up to an external drive.
well both my usbs are showing as local drives rn
then afer that, go to BIOS and see if RST is on.
yep, just find a blank USB and backup your files that are important to you from Windows (just in case)
i cant se them in explorer
well, the one u did it Etcher is probably showing full anway.
don't u have a blank USB?
i do, it just doesnt show up in file explorer
ok, unplug all the USB drives.. then replug JUST one which you are going to use for backups please.
yeah
if it doesn't show up still, let me know
yes
show a pic
can you right click it there (Disk 2) and see if there is a Format option
signature collision. LOL
huh
probably because you tried to make two drives with etcher right?
no, one used ventoy and rufus one used balena
what did u use on this exact drive having the blue i ?
well at first i think i used balena then cleared it and used ventoy and rufus
wwell i unplugged it and plugged it back in
and i was able to get the drive back on explorer
how much data do you think you have to back up?? if you have fast upload speed, you can use Microsoft OneDrive, Google Drive, or Drop Box.
oh that's good.
i have a folder for the main things i want to back up
ok so here's what to do.. run up Ventoy (ventoy2disk.exe) then go to its Option menu. (it should show this D: drive already in the main screen)
go to Partition Style, and pick GPT
then go to Partition configuration, and click on "leave space at end of drive"
leave enough space to be a bit MORE than the amount you need to backup.
for example, if what u need to back up totals 1 GB,,,, leave 10 GB space in ventoy option
well im guessing im gonna need atleast 4gb
this is on the 16gb drive
yws
ok so if you are ready, hit Install
it will take a short time.
afterwards, you'll need to format that free space to something like exFAT or NTFS (you can do that from Explorer)
done
you'll need to likely unplug the drive first, then replug
and close ventoy now.. since it is finished.
what do you see in Disk Management now for this 16 GB drive?
great.. so the last part (7 GB) is what u will want to format
and that is where u will put ur backup files
okay
see if u can from Explorer.. idk if it will show up.
just DONT mess with the 7.42 GB part, nor the 32 MB part.
when you right click the currently highlighted drive on the left, and do properties, what does it report for size?
ok, right click the OTHER one labelled ventoy, and do properties, what does it report for size?
can u show the whole picture pleae
ok copy and paste your backups folder into the empty "ventoy" drive. the 7.42 GB exfat volume.
we will forget about the spare 7 GB for now.
tag me when the files are backed up successfully there.. and let me know how much free space remains on that usb volume
@urban plinth im really tired im gonna go to bed, lets continue this another time, if possible give me the instructions and ill try to follow them
yeah just backup your important files to the ventoy drive.. if there is enough room too, add the linux Mint ISO as well.
next time you wake up.. go to BIOS, and turn off Intel RST (if you find it, probably in the Advanced: storage section)
after that, plug in only the Ventoy usb stick (with the Mint ISO copied on it) and do a reboot. You will boot to UEFI USB Storage Device. From there you will see white Ventoy screen, with the Mint ISO shown, available to boot. Boot normally.
That should take you to the Mint live environment desktop like before.. from there, open the start menu, and search "Disks" in the Accessories, or type-search it.
Run Disks, and you SHOULD see your main internal drive containing NTFS partition now. (if you successfully disabled RST)
then you may launch the installer, choose "Install alongside Windows" and it will give slider to divide space.
wdym download
please stop confusing download = install
download is not installing
i hate that misnomer too.
