I booted from USB, everything went well, however I got a question about unmounting partitions. Someone on Reddit had the same problem and the solution was to correctly shutdown the computer instead of letting it hibernate. I quit the installation (only got as far as choosing whether or not to install drivers), removed the USB and turned my computer off, then booted into Windows. I shut it down correctly this time, however upon choosing the USB in the boot menu, this is what I get
#fucked up installation i think?

go back into Windows
open a admin-mode command prompt, then type powercfg -h off
that will turn off Fast Startup/Hybrid Hibernation.
I already turned off Fast Startup earlier
then go back to BIOS, turn off Secure Boot (again), then reboot to the device "UEFI USB storage Drive"
also the drive looks like this now
the USB that i flashed
do i need to reflash or something?
/grub/grub.cfg
nah nah.. should be a very large file .. like 100 Megs.. or 50 Megs
reflash?
lol what did u use to make it?
i used balena etcher
try with Ventoy, it's more reliable, versatile, and more featured
the first time i did it it worked fine when booting, but it showed up grey in the menu and the contents couldn't be accessed
it was after i removed it that the folders appeared
as in, in windows
if there isn't at least 2.5 to 3 Gigs on that drive, something's not right
well uh
get ventoy
ventoy will also make your drive back to full capacity and usable for any other files.
okay
@tropic bloom
meh.. reboot to BIOS, and turn Secure Boot off
.
hm
try again to disable or set to "other OS"
Or else search Youtube for "Thio joe ventoy" (ultimate usb) n jump halfway in to see how to boot WITH the SB support feature
how can I restore a usb to factory state?
i want to try, since when i booted it the first time it worked fine
run ventoy installer again, do Clear ventoy from menu in it
I would say first check if u had put secure boot support ON (default) in its Option menu
open Disks app
figure out ur disks names there, then decide ur answer
i usually say no
Now the Something Else option? (Installation type)
I’m supposed to create a root partition in sda’s free space, but neither have it
it does show up but sda1 free space is 1mb and sda2 free space is 0mb
did u erase your Windows installation?
no, i chose the last option, this is a supposedly empty external disk
oh if it's an empty disk, cancel that
start installer fresh, and do "erase and install Mint" then tell it the disk to do so with
oh
is it the only disk on the machine?
i just went back, didn’t have to cancel
no, i have the internal with Windows and external which i want to use
hmm
with detachable external ones, there can be issues if u put the bootloader to the internal drive. therefore:
you should temporarily remove the internal drive. (power off) then install Linux (auto mode, erase and install) to the external.
that is truly the safest way becuz if the drive was ever detached, and the internal OS boots, it'll likely shit itself blindly
how can i power off the internal?
or worse
turn off machine.. open compartment or case .. unplug drive.
it’s a laptop..
no easy open to change a drive?
if that's the case, then do a manual install to the external drive.
- one FAT32-formatted partition about 100 MB, set with the ESP, boot flags in gparted
- the rest of the space, ext4-formatted.
- on page 5 of installer, click each in turn.. click change button, USE-AS (esp) and (ext4 journalling filesystem -- mount as / )
- near bottom, pick the external drive's SPECIFIC PARTITION where the ESP is on.
done.
It’s impossible to even open the backside sadly
The screws are hidden under the rubber foot, which not only gets destroyed in the process, but the screws themselves are covered in a thick layer of adhesive
then do as above
I do the partitions in the liveboot? and what does [set with the esp, boot flags in gparted] mean
i know what gparted is, just the rest
they're flags that must be set for the partition. just right click on the partition line. pick manage flags, then check off those two and nothing else.
and make sure in the installer the proper one is chosen and edited to USE AS "ESP"
yes in the live boot, use gparted to prep those few things, before running up the installer. If u see any key symbols on partitions, right-click: Unmount.
thanks
I tried Ventoy again since for some reason I etcher won’t work anymore, i used GPT partition and disabled secure boot support (it is also turned off in bios)
i get this error:
Invalid signature detected. Check secure boot policy in setup
should have left Secure Boot Support enabled as the default had it in the Ventoy Options.
you're not managing to actually disable Secure Boot in the BIOS. that's what's blocking you.
how can i do it then? i disabled it and saved
let's have a look at your BIOS screens
yeah it tends to re-enable itself almost each time u boot Windows. lol
Jesus
while you're there, turning it off, move the boot device priority up a notch (the UEFI USB HDD ) to top of list
so u can eventually hopefully boot ur external install.
if it turns on each time what’s the point to even do that
i’ll redo the usb and then do it each time manually
hm?
i hate this shit man if it wasnt for microsoft being annoying id give up already
if it turns itself on every single time i boot into windows, and i boot into it a lot since the usb doesn’t work rn, what’s the point to even go into bios now
right. turn it off, boot ventoy, and do the manual install. when it's done, it will tell u to unplug the "install medium" and press enter.. remove the ventoy stick, but certainly leave the external HDD connected. and it should auto-boot Linux from it.
and move the device list up a notch
rn i’m having trouble even accessing the live version, that’s why i’m trying every method
i booted live a few times using balena and it was alright and i thought i had figured it out but im getting the same error as previously
this one
that's happening now with your Etcher stick?
oh, i did say let's have a look at your BIOS pages
prob need to kill fastboot/quickboot in BIOS
i recommend extend the POST hotkey delay to 5 seconds, or next closest thing.. SB OFF, UEFI USB Flash drive/ USB Hard disk to top of list.. then show Security and Config categories.
k one sec
ok in security, turn TPM state to disabled. and explore the UEFI HII option in the Config. category
oooooh SNAP
intel RST is always a pain in these cases.
if there's anything important on ur Windows drive, get in it and back it up to an totally separate external drive, or upload to online storage.
then gotta come back in here in pic 1, and turn off Intel RST.
wait wait.. sorry no.
ur installing on an EXTERNAL disk, I forgot. 😄
carry on with these steps once you set the BIOS things as discussed.. (leave intel RST alone too)
🙏
I still get the invalid signature lol
I’ll try once again with the etcher tomorrow
OH SHIT
@tropic bloom
?
i got bitlocker
well... that'd be more of an issue if u were installing onto the nvme
which you are not
watch the thio joe vid from the middle.
i got bitlocker while booting on the normal drive
also boot Windows now and back up
i got it wyen booting windows
can i turn off and go into bios normally? wont lose anything?
that's where the BL key is kept
just ctrl-alt-delete.. that'll restart to POST screen
its not workinf
i got the key i am NOT touching that shit again
it also deleted my windows pin and logged me out atp ill back everythinf up
so , u managed to log into and reach the Windows desktop, save some files, and then it logged you out?
yep good idea. the encryption thing is a bit of a hindrance in these cases.. as for the Secure boot causing that black mok error screen.. i can't say why. but if need be watch the WHOLE thio joe vid, he shows how to make a ventoy usb WITH secure boot support enabled, AND how to enroll it in those Mok blue screens.
i’ll watch it tmrw, thankuu

setting to use for rather new computers ^
how it should look once prepared right. (including the lock symbols there)
Hello. I was using this chat to fix the same problom on my end but got lost. If it ok. May I join in this chat?
sure
Wait! Sorry. I jumped the gun and it look like I got it. I been reading tho your chat. I got Ventoy and it look like it works for now. Thank you
ok koo
hey @tropic bloom , i managed to boot via ventoy finally, could you help me with the installation? i had problems with my disk the last time
yeah, i was on holiday and then i needed a mental break from this laptop lol
what does this mean? i assume it refers to my external disk that i want to install on
ventoy usb stick is sda, big drive is sdb
are those the only drives on the PC?
I recall this was an issue last time.
yeah
you want to install to an external hard drive now?
there’s also an internal, which is marked as /dev/
I wanted to install to the external in the first place (sdb)
ok so make sure the external drive is plugged in right now
internal
then show a picture of the Disks app
yep. i see the device name from the previous picture. dev/nvme0n1 (just stay away from that one)
click the 1 TB drive, and then check the title bar
good. u see in titlebar it is called sdb
since sda is the USB stick, and nvme0n1 was never mounted to begin with, you can just answer "No" to the question about unmounting other devices.
@viral sleet what option did you choose in the beginning of the installation? was it "Erase disk and install" ?
oh great, that's the automatic way. just tell it that disk
but it will put grub loader on the nvme disk
is that a problem?
is there a way to just put everything on the external?
I had this issue the last time, it shows as if the disk was full
let me have a close examination of it, one sec
ok can you skip backward a step in the installer please.
@viral sleet
then open gparted program in start menu.
This popped up again when I clicked „back”
no again?
opened
choose the 1 TB disk in the top right selector box
you have nothing on this disk correct? it can be wiped?
there is nothing, just the files that came with the disk and a copy of mint 22 iso because i had to download it via someone elses computer due to lack of wifi
everythinf can be deleted
ok let's make it fully clean ok?
yeah sure
cuz I see some funny stuff re: ms partition and exfat right now
go to the Device menu in gparted
make sure u dont change the disk. keep it the 1 TB one selected
then in Device Menu, choose make new partition table
and use GPT option
oops forgot to unmount
unmount?
cant i just unmount via the installer? since jts asking for it anyway
then back to this
done
ok now it's fully unallocated
yes
right click in it, do "new"
which will be the first partition
make it 150 MiB , as FAT32
align to MiB?
done
now on the remaining space, right click, do new, and make the rest ext4
excellent, now click the big green checkmark to finalize
but dont close gparted yet
done
k good. right click pt'n 1, and "manage flags"
add just this: ESP, and BOOT
then close gparted , (you can reopen it to make sure the flags stayed)
okay, now „something else” in the installation?
in gparted rhey show up
great
you can close gparted then
now in the something else setup, you see the chart
it seems to have stayed the same though
yes this chart
cancel the installer... start again
it should reflect the new filesystems
(FAT32, plus EXT4 - for p1, and p2 respectively)
wonderful. now we're getting somewhere
ok click p2, then "change" button
and put "use as" to ext4 system
and mountpoint to /
then same for p1, change> and use as: EFI system Partition
I don't think it needs a mountpoint once you change it to EFI Sys. Part.
done
after all that, in bottom of main window, you will see: Bootloader location.. change it to sdb1
so it WONT go onto the nvme
let me have a final inspection
yes click install or continue button
read over the final summary, and if u agree, then proceed
it will automatically install on the partition? i dont need to choose anything?
yes
we just set all the options up.
the only thing AFTER installation to do, is take out the USB flash stick when it tells you to, then press Enter, and as the machine restarts, IMMEDIATELY press the BIOS key to adjust Boot order to the USB 1 TB.
and then it will boot to it.
(if u ever remove the USB hard drive, and need Windows, you'll need to change boot order back to Windows Boot Manager in the BIOS)
can i just keep the order as is? and ill boot into mint manually every time
i might sometimes be somewhere without the drive and it will be a nuisance
sure
when it's all finished you'll choose "ubuntu" from bios boot menu
oh it finished fast?
for some reason the ubuntu boot option is higher than windows
yeah it finished in like 6 minutes
wow fast hdd
ssd actually lol
u can change boot order, or just use grub to go to windows, while the external islugged in
you're welcome! you may want to make a separate backup btrfs partition on the adata ( let's say 300 GB) to save Timeshift snapshots before u break ur linux system 😛
(u must use the ventoy usb and gparted for that to shrink the big ext4 a bit)
shrink the big one by 300 gb and just make a new one in the btrfs format?
exactly
why do i need usb for that?
then timeshift use the btrfs backup option
u cant edit from Windows or from running linux same drive
okay
